4. How

I could hear muffled sounds. It was whispery; like an untamed clatter, coming from an unknown place. The most amazing thing was I couldn’t recognize the sounds. It wasn’t from the cellar I stayed in.

“Is she…the Alpha’s mate??” “Wow… she’s so pretty!” “Quiet! Let’s go out so we won’t wake her up…”

“Oh, no. Alpha is coming, let’s leave!”

The next thing I heard was the sound of a door opening, with a creaking sound. My eyes immediately opened swiftly out of shuddered open that minute. The first thing that my eyes laid on the moment I opened it was white ceilings. I stared at them confusingly…

Where was I?

With the Moon Goddess perhaps, because I remember trying to take my life.

Slowly, I sat up from the bed, rubbing my eyes to see everything clearly. It was by the time I dropped my hands that I came face-to-face with a handsome stranger. All of a sudden, like strong tidal waves, the incidents that happened began springing in.

The ropes.

The tree.

And, my body dangling before it.

My lips quivered when I remembered that it was that same face I had seen before I had passed out. I remembered a voice yelling so much at some people to bring me down. I also remembered being carried somewhere. But everything had blacked out. I didn’t remember anything after that.

Directly ahead of me was a man staring at me so intensely. Like I was some exhibition in a museum for display. I began to sense various parts of my body been self-conscious. I shrugged a shoulder, deciding to figure out a way to know where I was.

“W-Who a-are you?” I asked, wriggling my brows at how intimately his gaze was on me. It was at that moment the most delicious smell entered my nostrils.

“Mate! Mate!” My wolf, Merida yelled; jumping with so much excitement. My eyes directed to the supposed person she called our mate. The man had a bulky stature that was intimidating. In fact, he had the aura of an Alpha. I became so scared of his stares as his eyes bored into mine.

A solid hand which burned through my skin gripped my waist tightly. It was so possessive that my knees began to weaken. My body welcomed the shrills of passion as it went down my bone. No one, in fact nobody had ever held me like this in my entire life. I had never been romanced on, neither had I been glanced on like this handsome stranger was observing me. This made me wonder if my wolf was actually right. If he was really my mate or not…

This was impossible.

How could I have a mate?

My mate was Beta Devin and he rejected me, right? Or was he— Was he my second-chance mate?? He definitely was. But, how could this perfect creature be mates with someone like me? I was a miserable Omega nobody cared about.

“I—”

“No, please don’t reject me. I promise to never show up again but please don’t reject me,” I begged, going out of his arms. His entire face was masked with an amazed expression, as he watched me carefully.

I had to leave.

If I stayed, he would surely discover about the lies my pack told of me. When he did, he’d reject me just like my first mate did. With that thought, I did the first thing that came into my mind.

I sized up the distance, running past him with my wolf, with full speed. Next, I opened the door and fled his presence that minute.

Bad decisions.

I am the queen of that. I am that one person who had been misunderstood many a times. It was no wonder my pack treated me like a piece of shit and bullied me daily. When I ran out of that room, I shifted that instant and ran into the forest, trying to go to anywhere as long as it wasn’t near my second-chance mate.

I could hear the warriors pursuing me but I didn’t halt even for a second. I continued running so fast as I surged ahead, with a very startled expression on my face.

“What are you doing? Take me to mate, now!” Merida said. I ignored her, kicking my legs further. I didn’t want to pass through the pain of rejection again. Instead, I’ll rather die than go through something like that again. Cause I was unwanted.

No one had to scream it to me to tell me that.

I reached a familiar part of the forest I remembered going through. I remembered this was the exact river I had met that Maliah (the mermaid) in. Too bad I was going to end it all here. My wolf could hear footsteps approaching it. I quickly shifted to human form and dived into the river to end it all.

As I got in, I could feel myself slowly sink in. I couldn’t even swim because I never got a chance to train with the pack members. They had isolated me so much that I learnt the hard way, crying everyday with no one to sooth or comfort me. Whenever I had wanted to train with them. they’d call me a murderer and force me to get out of the water no matter how much I explained myself to them.

I felt the water choking me. It entered my ears, mouth, and all other parts of me that were opened too. I went deeper and deeper into the shallow end. I opened my eyes when I got down there. There was something different about this part of the world. It was peaceful and serene. So calm and quiet. This was the first calmness I had experienced in the last five years.

My throat began to burn as I began to see various colors. I began to sense myself passing out from the non-breathing state I was in. I just hoped this time no one stopped me and allowed me to meet my parents with the Moon Goddess.

All of a sudden, I felt someone dragging me to the surface. It was unexplainable because I had made sure no one had seen me before I jumped in. The last thing I remembered was being dropped on dry land.
