Chapter 1

The moment my words fell, Ethan Meyer's expression darkened, then a flicker of excitement crept in.

Without another word, he dragged Grayson Hudson out of the hospital room.

I followed quietly behind them and heard him whisper at the stairwell.

"Grayson, I'm begging you—help me put on a show! Pretend to be Lisa's fiancé. Just cover for me until the engagement ceremony. It's only a month. It'll go by quickly. Please!"

His tone was matter-of-fact, even laced with a hint of impatient indulgence.

"During this time, I want to be with Sarah… enjoy myself before the wedding."

Grayson didn't respond. He simply stared at him, brows drawn tight.

After a long moment of silence, he finally agreed.

I lowered my head, a wave of bitterness rising in my chest, and slipped quietly back to my room.

My injuries weren't severe. By the afternoon, after completing the discharge procedures, Grayson drove me home.

Inside the confined space of the car, an unfamiliar presence slowly pressed in around me.

My body tensed. I picked at my nails, my palms damp with sweat.

Grayson held the steering wheel steadily, his gaze flickering toward me from time to time—intense, almost burning.

The instant our eyes met, I hurriedly turned to look out the window.

The light turned red, and the car came to a slow stop.

He looked at me and handed over a tissue.

"Lisa… have you really forgotten everything?"

I didn't answer. I simply nodded.

Suddenly, he leaned closer and took my hand, holding it firmly.

"It's okay if you've forgotten me. I'll help you remember—little by little."

I looked up and met his gentle gaze. My stiff body began to relax without me realizing it.

Back at the villa, after taking my medication, he settled me into a guest room to rest.

Before turning off the lights, Grayson pressed a soft kiss to my forehead.

"I'll be right next door. Call me if you need anything."

I slept deeply, more soundly than I had in a long time.

When I woke again, it was already the middle of the night.

Thirsty, I got up and went downstairs for water—only to see Ethan had come over under the pretense of picking something up.

He lowered his voice, his tone pleading.

"Grayson, remember to make it convincing. Don't let Lisa see through it."

Grayson's voice carried a clear edge of displeasure.

"If Sarah is all you care about, why not break off the engagement and marry her? Is it fair to treat a woman who loves you like this?"

Ethan lit a cigarette and propped his foot on the coffee table.

"What do you know? I'm the eldest son of the Meyer family. Sarah comes from nothing—how could she possibly be worthy of me? If we're talking about becoming Mrs. Meyer, Lisa is the better choice."

Grayson seemed at a loss for words.

"Aren't you afraid that if Lisa regains her memory, she'll leave you for good?"

He let out a scoff, his voice certain.

"She loves me so much. When the time comes, a little coaxing and she'll come right back."

Leaning against the doorway, I felt as though my heart were being pierced over and over by fine steel needles—rage and pain twisting together.

So this was what I meant to him. A woman he could manipulate at will.

I wiped away my tears and steadied my voice.

"Darling."

The living room fell deathly silent.

Ethan spun around, his face draining of color. He thought I had overheard everything and rushed to explain.

But I walked straight past him and threw myself into Grayson's arms. I wrapped my arms tightly around his waist, my voice trembling.

"Darling, why are you here? I just had a nightmare… I was so scared…"

Grayson stiffened slightly, then gently raised a hand to stroke my back.

We stood there in an embrace—looking, to any outsider, like a deeply devoted couple.

But to Ethan, the sight darkened his expression instantly. He opened his mouth to speak, only to be silenced by a glance from Grayson.

Grayson guided me to the sofa, then got up to pour me some water. He cut fruit into small pieces and fed them to me.

Afterward, he brought over a blanket and draped it carefully around me.

Every movement was gentle and attentive, as if afraid the slightest misstep might make me uncomfortable.

All the tenderness I had longed for countless times—yet never received from Ethan—was now being given to me by the man before me.

Warmth mingled with bitterness, quietly surging in my chest. And yet, the kinder he was, the deeper my confusion grew.

The Grayson I once knew had always been distant and indifferent toward me—even openly resistant. I didn't even know when I had offended him.

But now, the care and gentleness he showed me felt nothing like someone who disliked me.

Even in an act, a person's eyes can't lie.

So what exactly was going on?

Early the next morning, I returned to my family home. Not long after I announced that I was calling off the engagement with Ethan, his parents showed up at my door.Ethan followed behind them, disheveled. Clearly, he hadn't slept all night. The moment they stepped inside, his mother grabbed my hand."Lisa, don't be angry anymore. Ethan was just being foolish for a moment. I've already given him a harsh scolding. Please forgive him."Ethan's father looked at me, his expression stern."The marriage alliance between the Meyer and Robinson families was as good as settled. Now you're calling it off just like that? It's extremely disrespectful. Is this the kind of upbringing the Robinson family prides itself on?"From beginning to end, they had not offered a single word of sincere apology.Ethan stepped forward, making one last attempt."Lisa, you've seen how sincere I am. Let's get back together, okay? Yes, I made a mistake—but haven't you also been with Grayson? That makes us even

Grayson and I left the amusement park and returned to the villa. We shut out all the noise from the outside world, closing the doors to enjoy time that belonged only to us.But the peace lasted less than two days before trouble came knocking. That afternoon, after lunch, we were watering the flowers together when Sarah suddenly barged in."Lisa! You shameless woman! Get out here!""What did you say to Ethan? Ever since we got back from the amusement park, he's been talking about breaking up with me. This has to be your doing!"Grayson moved to shield me, about to speak, but I stopped him. With a light laugh, I stepped forward, my composure unwavering as I faced her."Sarah, did you hit your head on the way over here? You interfered in my engagement. How do you have the nerve to accuse me?"Sarah faltered, her words stumbling over each other."I—I'm truly in love with Ethan! Love doesn't care about who came first!""Truly in love?"I walked up to her, looking down at her from

Ignoring Ethan's shock, I shook him off."Grayson, wait up!"I hurried after him, almost breaking into a run. The sight of his lonely figure stirred an ache I couldn't put into words."Grayson, why are you running?"He froze, then slowly turned around. The man who was always calm and composed now had trembling hands. He didn't dare look at me. His Adam's apple bobbed as he struggled to speak."Because I'm afraid… I'm afraid of watching you go back to him with my own eyes. I wouldn't be able to bear it."I know your heart belongs to Ethan. I was never going to win against him. Being able to stay by your side as your fiancé for this past month… that's already more than I could have hoped for."I looked at his reddened eyes, my heart softening."I'll ask you one more time, Grayson. Do you love me?""I do!""How much?"He met my gaze, unwavering."More than I love myself."Warmth surged through me, my eyes stinging faintly."Then be the one who makes me happy."Grayson froze

At the sound of my voice, Ethan's expression changed abruptly."Lisa… y-you didn't lose your memory?"Panic flashed in his eyes, but he quickly forced himself to calm down.He stepped forward and grabbed my hand tightly."Lisa, listen to me. I don't have feelings for Sarah. I just… got a little scared of marriage and wanted to indulge myself for a few days before the wedding. The one I truly love has always been you."His words came fast, yet carried a certainty—as if he were convinced that, just like before, no matter what he did wrong, I would forgive him.Beside us, Grayson watched our entangled hands, the light in his eyes fading little by little. He seemed to believe that, in the end, I would still choose Ethan. His solitary figure turned away slowly, as if he were about to walk out of my life.I was about to go after Grayson when Ethan blocked my path. I stared at Ethan's face, a wave of nausea twisting in my stomach."Don't touch me! Ethan, you disgust me. Let's break up

Grayson and I exchanged a smile. He slipped off his coat and draped it over my shoulders."It's getting a little chilly. Let's go home. The jewelry and clothes I had custom-made for you overseas have arrived. We can try them on this afternoon."Ethan stared at us, fury churning in his eyes."Ethan… be gentle, that hurts…"Sarah frowned, her voice soft and coquettish as she clung to him.He immediately released her hand and grabbed Grayson instead."I need to talk to you."Curious, I followed them quietly. At a secluded corner of the amusement park, Ethan forced a smile that didn't reach his eyes."Grayson, what exactly are you playing at? I only asked you to pretend to be Lisa's fiancé so I could have a little freedom before the wedding. And now you're acting all intimate with her—are you trying to humiliate me on purpose?"Grayson shook off his grip, something long suppressed flickering in his eyes."From the very beginning, I was never acting for you. I like Lisa. I've lik
