Chapter 7

Author: Memo Harbor
Cyrus scrolled through the catalog of safehouse options and began selecting what he needed.

First came full structural reinforcement. His apartment would be gutted, every wall, ceiling, and floor replaced with 8-inch alloy panels. The material was aerospace-grade—one-third the weight of steel but ten times stronger—ideal for embedding into a high-rise without overloading the building. The windows would be swapped for the world's toughest bulletproof glass.

Next, the ventilation system would receive full air filtration, keeping out any toxic gas. Then a complete surveillance network would cover every angle, inside and out. Finally, the door: it would be replaced with a vault-grade security door, like those used in major banks. Even a small bomb would barely scratch it.

In short, Cyrus' demand was simple: his apartment would become an impenetrable fortress.

He handed the tablet back. Hector skimmed the request, eyebrows rising. Cyrus wanted to transform a 1,300-square-foot apartment into a steel box.

"With weapons inside, this wouldn't just be a house. It'd be a fortress," Hector muttered.

Cyrus' eyes flickered. "Oh? You know a thing or two about fortresses?"

Hector chuckled. "I used to work overseas as a mercenary. I know my way around military hardware."

An idea sparked in Cyrus' mind. He lowered his voice. "Then tell me—can you get guns?"

Hector's expression turned grave. Firearms were strictly forbidden in Cretora.

"Mr. Knovell, you should know that's illegal," he said quietly. "What's this really about? Dangerous enemies?"

Cyrus seized the chance to play along. "Exactly. I crossed some people from the underworld. They're armed, ruthless. I just want to protect myself. Otherwise, hiding behind reinforced walls won't help."

Hector smiled wryly. "I'm afraid I can't help with that. We're a legitimate company."

Cyrus caught the hesitation in his eyes. Hector was capable but unwilling to take the risk. He leaned forward. "This project will cost me over 1.6 million. If something happens to me afterward, that won't look good for your company. I only need a few weapons to defend myself. Help me, and you won't regret it."

Hector fell silent with a frown. He had the connections, but was Cyrus worth the risk?

"Go home for now," Hector finally said. "I can't promise anything, but I'll ask around. If I hear something, I'll contact you."

Cyrus did not press. Guns were sensitive. It was better to wait. He smiled. "Then I'll wait for your news. In the meantime, start work on the safehouse. I need it as soon as possible."

"Half a month," Hector assured him. "We'll have it ready."

They signed the contract on the spot. Cyrus paid a 200,000-dollar deposit, knowing he would likely never pay the balance.

Leaving Wyvern Security, Cyrus ticked "shelter" off his mental checklist. That problem was settled. Next: weapons.

Back in his car, he called an old acquaintance, Seamus Lancaster, who ran a private hunting ground on Mt. Barat—hundreds of acres stocked with harmless game for leisure hunters.

Seamus had plenty of legal hunting gear like crossbows, compound bows, and air rifles. Cyrus had visited before and had Seamus' number.

This time, he asked for bulk and offered extra payment.

Seamus, a businessman first, agreed easily. "Mr. Knovell, what do you need so many for? These are for hunting, right? Not hurting people?"

Caution laced his voice. Selling the gear was one thing, and liability was another.

Cyrus laughed. "Relax. I'm taking friends on a hunting trip in Kongor. Just stocking up."

Seamus whistled. "Kongor, huh? Lions and hyenas out there. Stay safe."

"Don't worry. When can you have the gear ready?"

"I've got stock on hand. Swing by anytime."

Cyrus did not waste a second. He drove straight to Mt. Barat and loaded up: five steel crossbows, three high-grade compound bows, and 300 arrows and bolts for each. Two Damascus steel hunting knives, razor-sharp and nearly unbreakable, rounded out the haul. They were perfect for close combat.

By the time he finished, his trunk was full. The sight filled him with a deep sense of security. With a hunting license already in his name, no one would question it.

By dusk, he returned home.

That evening, he treated himself to a barbecue feast at a famous smokehouse. As he bit into sizzling ribs and brisket, he realized that soon, if he wanted barbecue, he would have to grill it himself.

Thus, he did the only logical thing—he ordered 10,000 packs of the restaurant's signature barbecue rubs and sauces.

The staff froze, assuming he was playing a prank. Once the manager confirmed he was serious and would pay in full, they proceeded with the order.

Cyrus dropped over 200,000 dollars on the spot. The manager, grinning ear to ear, even tossed in an extra 500 bottles for free.

Cyrus lit the stink bombs and tossed them through the firing slot above the door. The moment they hit the ground, thick black smoke gushed out, spreading rapidly through the corridor. The stench was unbearable, like someone had just cracked open a jar of feces sealed for ten years.Diana and Natalie gagged on the spot."Ugh, what the hell is this? Bleeerrgh!""Cyrus… Ugh… You're disgusting!"The foul reek only grew stronger and flooded the stairwell. Both women clutched their stomachs, vomiting as they stumbled away in a panic.Cyrus had no concern about the smell seeping back inside. Once he closed the firing slot, his apartment was practically sealed. The place had been renovated with an air-filtration system that could keep out stench or any harmful air.Cyrus burst into laughter as he watched through his monitors the two women stagger down the hallway and retching uncontrollably. But soon after, a complaint arrived from his next-door neighbors.[Cyrus, what the hell did you

The moment that topic came up, it reignited everyone's fury. When the snow had first started falling, even in the bitter cold, some people still wanted to go out and stock up on supplies. However, Linda had kept spamming the group chat, insisting the snowstorm would soon pass. She had even claimed that anyone hoarding supplies would be "dealt with."Because of her, no one dared to shop. Then, just a few days later, the blizzard sealed off all the roads. Going out became impossible. If not for her lies, at least everyone could have stocked up for another half a month."Damn old hag, look what you've done!""It's all your fault, you cursed wretch!"The neighbors cursed Linda furiously. Soon after, the voice message of the rich heir, Vincent, popped up in the chat."I'll buy supplies at a high price. Food, water, whatever! I'll pay 2,000 dollars for a pack of pasta and 1,000 dollars for a bottle of mineral water!"By then, a pack of pasta was selling for 1,000 dollars. Vincent was

Diana fussed over her sofa, wrinkling her nose at Percy, who reeked of piss. At the door just moments ago, he had taken the full force of Cyrus' so-called "baptism."She immediately snapped at him, yelling for him to get off the sofa.Percy felt utterly wronged. He had only provoked Cyrus because Diana had asked him to. Now he was soaked in urine and shivering due to the cold, and his body was bruised and bleeding. Yet Diana still treated him like this. But a bootlicker was still a bootlicker. The more he thought about it, the more he convinced himself Diana was right. 'I failed her. I didn't even handle the matter properly. And like this—filthy and stinking—how can I desecrate Diana's sofa?'The more he dwelled on it, the more he believed her scolding was deserved. He quickly jumped up and lowered his head in apology. "I'm sorry, Diana. It's all my fault. Please don't be mad at me!"Diana and Natalie, both anxious to change their clothes, waved him off impatiently."Hurry up and

Diana and Natalie screamed in unison."Ah! What is this?""Wait! It's hot water! It's steaming!"For a fleeting second, the sudden warmth brought relief. Then, the acrid stench hit, twisting their faces in revulsion."This… This is piss!""Ah!"Drenched from head to toe, they shrieked like slaughtered pigs and collapsed to the floor while gagging and retching violently.Percy's eyes burned red with rage. He pounded on the door. "Cyrus, you asshole! I'll fucking kill you!"The heavy alloy door didn't budge. Instead, Percy's fists throbbed with pain.Inside, Cyrus' laughter echoed without restraint. "How's the taste of my piss? Nice and refreshing? You brain-dead idiots actually thought you could con me? Pathetic!"Only then did Percy and the others realize they had been exposed from the start. Shock and fury twisted their faces as they hurled curses at the door."Fuck, I shouldn't have wasted time talking!" Percy snarled. "Just wait. I'll break in and gut you alive!"He drop

Seeing no response, Percy pounded on the door even harder. "Cyrus! Cyrus! It's me, Percy! Open up! I have something very important to tell you!"Inside, Cyrus sneered. He reached for his gun and clicked off the safety. Strolling to the door, he called lazily, "Who is it?"Percy heard his voice and gestured downward, signaling Diana and Natalie to get ready. Both women were tense—their first attempt at murder—but the thought of killing Cyrus and moving into his warm, well-stocked apartment steeled their resolve. Their eyes sharpened with fierce determination.Percy spoke in a pitiful tone. "Cyrus, it's me, Percy. My family's food is gone. For the sake of us being colleagues, could you spare some?"He wore a pleading expression, but his hand hovered near his coat, ready to draw the knife.Cyrus leaned casually against the door. "I don't have any food left either. Can't help you with that."Behind the door, Diana and Natalie silently cursed. No food? What about the seven or eight bo

At that moment, Percy felt Diana clutch his arm. Even through eight layers of clothing, that faint pressure sent a surge of triumph through his chest. He straightened immediately and declared, "Haha, alright! Don't worry, Diana! Leave this to me!"Seeing his confidence, Diana added, "But you have to be careful. Cyrus is selfish and shameless. If we try to take his place, he might fight back.""That's why we need weapons. And it's best if we strike first!" Percy shot back.Natalie chimed in from the side, her eyes flashing with hatred. "I say we just kill him outright!"She hated Cyrus more than anyone. She had sent him racy selfies, and instead of being moved, he had dismissed her as too ugly. If that ever got out, she would rather die. To her, Cyrus had to die.Percy hesitated. Killing someone? It sounded easy in theory, but they had lived in a civilized society for over 20 years. Crossing that line wasn't simple.Upon noticing his hesitation, Diana's face darkened. "What? You
