If you knew someone was going to die, are you obligated to save them?

Well, for Christiana Knox, she tried to save everyone, and look where it got her.

Six feet underground, her throat was filled with sand and the dead, metallic taste of blood, and she was in the middle of swarms of burrowers feeding on humans and infecting what was left over. She couldn't run, because her feet had been ripped away, along with her left hand, and probably half of her torso was gone.

Christy couldn't recall how long she had stayed there—two hours? Three? Or maybe a day. Time no longer held meaning after she watched those creatures rip her poor babies apart. Christy had fought them off, but what could a woman do against swarms of hungry, monster burrowers?

She watched, one by one, as they infected the bodies and threw them aside. There were piles and piles of bodies, and she was next in line. Christy tried to move, run, or hide—the way a body tries everything it can to escape danger. Her eyes stared straight ahead, her voice caught in her throat. It happened in a flash: a burrower struck its sucker into her neck, just below the jaw. Christy watched as what looked like a white fluid moved into her body. Her remaining body parts went numb as she slowly lost consciousness, hot tears dripping down her face.

It didn't have to end this way. No, it shouldn't have ended like this.

"Hey, mommy, wake up." Christy heard the warm, familiar voice of Taby. She shook her head; her vision blurred at first.

"Where am I?" Christy asked in a low voice.

Christy heard a playful giggle, small hands nudging her shoulders. "Don't be silly, mommy. You're in our house."

Christy jolted off the bed, her eyes wide open as she glanced around the room, her body shaking so much. She touched her face, her legs, and her neck. They felt as if nothing had happened.

Had she been dreaming? But it felt so fucking real. Her body was covered in sweat, but deep down she felt those chills in her bones, those round black eyes that had stared right into hers before striking her. She desperately hoped it was a dream, and just like that, her eyes found Taby sitting on the bed. Sam had his hand in his sister's, his small eyes blinking nonstop as they stared innocently at her.

"Taby, Sam?" Christy said, unable to contain her emotions. Tears flowed freely as she pulled her babies into a tight hug.

"Mommy, why are you crying?" Sam asked.

Christy pulled them tighter. How could she explain to a five-year-old that she'd had a nightmare where monsters lived underground, poisoning the and killing humans, and that everyone eventually died? Maybe Judas, her ex-husband, was right. She was really losing her mind.

"Stay like this for mommy," Christy released them from her hug just to draw them back into another one.

"Your phone is ringing, mommy," Taby said.

"I know, Taby, I know," Christy answered, her voice coming out in a soft rumble. She had thought she would never get to hold her darling kids again—that they would not grow up as normal children, go on dates, and get married. She had thought she'd lost the only gift life gave her, and now she'd just discovered maybe it was all in her head.

After what felt like forever, Christy pecked her two babies, her body still shaken from what she referred to as a nightmare.

"Taby, can you do mommy a big favor and play with your brother in the playroom for a while?"

Taby nodded, delighted to play. She yelled after them.

"Don't go downstairs unless I ask you to."

"Okay, mommy," Sam's little voice reached her as they disappeared through the corner of the door.

She rushed to pick up her phone and dialed the callback; her mother had left her a series of missed calls.

"Hello, Mom," she said as soon as the line connected.

"Christiana, how could you have missed your sister's college graduation?" her mom's voice rang out angrily.

"C'mon, Mom, we've talked about this already," she said, dragging her hand through her hair in frustration.

"What do you mean we've talked about it?" she asked. "Your sister's graduation was yesterday, and I never called you," she added.

Christy wondered if her mom had suddenly developed amnesia. Her sister's college graduation had been three months ago, which she had forgotten, and when her mom called, scolding her for missing it—just as she was doing now—she had pleaded with her and promised to make it up to her. So Christy was beyond shocked that her mother was scolding her for the same reason.

"That was February 14th, Mom. Three months back," she said, rubbing her eyes.

"Have you finally lost it? Yesterday was February 14th. Today is the 15th, Christiana!" her mom raged, her voice sounding like someone who had finally lost her patience.

"What?" Christy brought down her phone from her ears. She covered her mouth in shock. Written boldly on her phone calendar was February 15th, which meant that it wasn't a dream. She had really died, and somehow she had woken up in the past. How?

"Hello? Hello?" she heard her mom say, but she was far away in thought. Cold fear gripped her as she quickly disconnected the call.

Reality dawned on her: the apocalypse had happened, she had died, she had lost her babies, and someone or something had brought her back in time. "How did this happen?" Christy muttered under her breath.

Suddenly a transparent floating board appeared in front of her eyes.

Written boldly was:

The hospital was the last place Christy wanted to be, yet it was where she needed to stay.Ramie was in one of the hospital rooms, fighting a disease Christy still didn’t know how to cure. Cal was unconscious in the ICU, his condition uncertain after the Burrower attack. And somewhere in the hospital, her two children were waiting for her to finish a shift she could barely concentrate on.She was running out of time, and for once, she had no idea what to do next. The hospital’s staff nanny had settled Taby and Sammy in the small break room off the pediatric ward. Coloring books were scattered across the table, a cartoon played quietly on the television, and Sam was already half-asleep on a beanbag chair.Christy checked on them during the first hour of her shift, making sure they had everything they needed before returning to her duties. The rest of the night passed in a blur of IV lines, X-rays, and patients who needed more attention than she had the energy to give. She worked on aut

"Don't tell me you risked your life to bring that thing with you?" Christy said with a frown."I smell trouble," Franc said, his voice barely above a whisper."I'm a scientist, remember?""A scientist? And you saw this as the right call?" Christy pointed at the dead juvenile burrower, blue, blood-like fluid dripping from its mouth."Did you think about what would have happened if those things in there got to you, or to Rosa? What would all of this be for?" she spat, her eyes burning with hurtful anger.Shedrack was speechless. He only watched, his eyes filled with guilt. To Christy's surprise, Rosa walked up to her and held her hand."I'm sorry, Rosa. I made him do it," she said.Christy couldn't believe her ears. Her eyes found Rosa's grey eyes, and Rosa quickly raised her hand to her ear."I'm sorry," she said."Can we get the hell out of here first!" Jobber screamed impatiently. Only then did Christy remember Cal—that in her rage, she had slapped him without a care in the world tha

"RUN!" Christy shouted. Several small bodies burst from the sewer, crawling over one another as they charged toward the group. Christy stumbled backward. They were smaller than the burrowers she remembered, but they were no less horrifying. Their bodies were pale and almost gray, their skin stretched tightly over their thin, twisted frames. Their limbs were unnaturally long, with sharp claws scraping against the concrete as they crawled. Their heads were almost completely round. And their eyes—black. Completely black. There were no pupils, no whites. Nothing. Their mouths split open, revealing rows of tiny, sharp teeth surrounding a dark, sucking cavity. "They're coming!" Rosa screamed. A gunshot rang through the sewer. BANG! One of the creatures jerked backward as the bullet struck its shoulder. "Keep moving!" Cal yelled. Franc and Jobber immediately opened fire. BANG! BANG! BANG! “What the fuck are they?” Someone asked, a question nobody had the luxury

"They are in the sewer, we are all going to die!" the boy screamed and thrashed like he had gone mad in Rosa's hold. Jobber and Franc rushed to hold him down too. Shedrack held Christy back. "What's in the sewer?" Christy asked, her voice shaky. She tried to take a step towards him, but Shedrack's hold was so tight it prevented her from moving even an inch. He stopped, as if trying to remember what they were. The horror in his eyes, and the way his badly bruised body was covered in chilling goosebumps, told her he wasn't crazy, even when it looked like it. "They… they're suckers… eat… dig…" he stuttered, his dilated eyes moving in no clear direction. "Hey! Stop thrashing around," Cal's heavy voice came from behind, where he'd been watching the boy for quite some time now. Christy felt cold run down her spine. Only one thing rang in her head: The Burrowers were already here. Then what the hell was happening to her timeline? She looked up at Shedrack, his hot breath fanning her

20/02/2030 Christy had just finished her shift that day. She had plans with Shedrack to investigate the sewer she'd gotten that water sample from. It had been a week of little sleep and severe fatigue, and her body was only just struggling to keep up with her pace. Christy called home to make sure her babies were alright. Mrs. James assured her that they'd been fine that morning when she took them to school. As for Judas, he hadn't checked up on them as he'd promised to. "That jerk!" Christy murmured under her breath as she turned a corner and strolled down to the parking lot where she and Shedrack had planned to meet. She saw him standing with his back to a black, long SUV. She waved at him, and to her shock, three men walked out from the other side of the SUV. "Hey," Christy said as she reached him, nodding towards them. "Hi, you must be Christiana Knox, his work girlfriend," the woman, introduced to Shedrack as Rosa, abruptly interrupted out of nowhere. "How did you

Shedrack handed her a cup of tea and sat beside her, his eyes searching hers. Her arms were crossed tight over her chest, her body still shivering slightly. "What do you mean by those things?" Shedrack asked, his eyes narrowing slightly without the rest of his face following. Christy's heartbeat was suddenly loud in her ears, drowning out everything else. Shedrack gripped her shoulder tightly. "You need to trust me, Christy," he pleaded, his voice soft at the edges. Christy inhaled, then exhaled loudly. She looked up at Shedrack, contemplating whether she should tell him or not. Her eyes then dropped to her fidgeting fingers, and she gripped them tightly. "If I tell you, promise me you'll believe me," Christy said. "C'mon, I'll believe you," he softly urged her on. Christy quickly recalled everything she knew, everything that had happened from her past life and now. Shedrack expression went from confusion to pale skin. "You mean the eclipse comes with the things… um,
