CHAPTER 40

THE FIRST REAL DATE

Elena woke the next morning with an unfamiliar feeling in her chest. Peace!

Not complete peace. There were still too many unanswered questions, too many dangers surrounding Adrian, and too many memories she hadn't figured out how to live with.

But beneath all of that was something she hadn't felt in years. Hope!

She lay still for a moment, staring at the ceiling.

The previous evening kept replaying in her mind.

I hate what you did.

CHAPTER 87THE CHOICEThe message remained on Adrian's screen. We know. That's why you were always the real target. He stared at it for several seconds before slowly looking up at Damien."How long?""How long for what?""How long until they make their next move?"Damien shook his head. "We don't know."Adrian turned towards the windows. The city stretched beneath him, completely unaware of the war being fought inside his company. People moved through their daily routines, businesses operated as usual, and traffic filled the streets. Yet somewhere out there, Elena was being held captive by people who believed they could force him to surrender everything he had built. His phone vibrated again. Another message appeared. You have twelve hours. A document followed.Adrian opened it, and his expression hardened as he read through the contents. It was a legal agreement, and the terms were simple: transfer controlling interest in Kane Group, step down as chief executive and surrender all aut

CHAPTER 86TAKENElena woke to silence. For a moment, she didn't remember where she was. Then the events of the previous night came rushing back: the photograph, the messages, and those four disturbing words. You are the trap. She turned her head towards the chair beside the bedroom door. Adrian was asleep there, his head resting against the backrest and exhaustion written across his face. He had refused to leave her alone. Even after Damien and the security officers had insisted that the apartment was secure, Adrian had remained awake for most of the night, keeping watch over her.Elena sat up quietly and studied him. She almost smiled at the sight of him trying so hard to protect her, even when he desperately needed rest. Then something felt wrong. The room was too quiet. She glanced towards the window. The curtains were closed, and she couldn't hear the security officers outside. A strange uneasiness crept over her."Adrian."He woke immediately and looked around. "What happened?"

CHAPTER 85THE TRAPThe message remained on the screen.THOMAS IS NOT THE ONLY ONE YOU SHOULD FEAR.Elena stared at it for several seconds before speaking. "They wanted us to see that."Adrian nodded. "Yes.""So they're watching the investigation.""Probably."Damien pulled up the security system on his monitor. "I'll check the building footage."Adrian turned towards Elena. "You should go home."She gave him a pointed look, and he immediately corrected himself. "Would you like to go home?"A faint smile touched her lips despite everything. "Much better."He nodded. "But I'm coming with you.""I know."Damien looked up from the monitors. "There's nothing unusual around the building.""Nothing?" Adrian asked."Not yet."Adrian's expression remained tense. "Keep monitoring."They left Kane Group together, unaware of the dark SUV parked several buildings away. Inside, a man watched their car disappear into the traffic before lifting his phone."They're leaving," he said.A voice answered

CHAPTER 84THE NAME THEY FEAREDElena stared at the signature at the bottom of the letter. For several seconds, she couldn't breathe. She knew the name.Adrian knew it too. Damien, standing beside them, looked from one face to another, his expression growing increasingly uneasy."Who is it?"Adrian didn't answer.Elena slowly lowered the letter."Thomas."The old man looked at her."You knew?"Thomas's expression tightened."I suspected.""That's not what I asked.""I didn't know for certain."Adrian's eyes hardened."You said someone inside their circle betrayed them."Thomas nodded."And you suspected this person?""I suspected everyone who had access.""That's not an answer."Thomas lowered his gaze."I suspected him."Elena's heart pounded."Why?""Because he was the only person who knew what your father and Jonathan were planning before they disappeared."Adrian looked at the letter again."And this signature?"Thomas nodded."He gave your father the warning."Elena frowned."The

CHAPTER 83THE MAN WHO TRIED TO WARN THEMThe message on the computer remained burned into Elena's mind long after the screen went dark.Your fathers tried to expose us once. They failed. It was no longer a question of whether her father's death had been an accident. Someone had just admitted that her father had been involved in something dangerous. Worse, someone had admitted knowing about it.Elena sat quietly as Adrian and Damien worked to secure copies of every file they had recovered."We need to move everything offline," Damien said. "If they can access this system, we can't assume anything here is safe."Adrian nodded. "Do it."Elena watched him for a moment before speaking."How many people knew about your father's investigation?""Very few.""What about my father?""I don't know.""Then find out."Adrian met her gaze. "I will."Damien's phone suddenly rang. He answered, listened for several seconds, then turned towards Adrian with a different expression."We have a name."Adr

CHAPTER 82THE DOCUMENTElena stared at the photograph in Adrian's hand. The person who started this is still alive. The words seemed to grow heavier the longer she looked at them."Who could it be?" she asked.Adrian shook his head."I don't know.""But someone does.""Yes.""Someone who's been watching us."Adrian's jaw tightened."Probably."Elena looked towards the empty corridor."Then we're not alone.""We should leave this floor.""No."Adrian looked at her. She held his gaze."We finally found something real. I'm not running from it."He nodded."Then we stay together."It was a simple sentence, but Elena noticed the difference. He wasn't ordering her to leave. He wasn't telling her what she should do.He was choosing to stand beside her. They returned to the archive. Damien locked the door behind them.
