Chapter 3

Author: Ginger King
My chest heaved with rage. I could no longer contain the fury burning inside me.

But before I could break free of my mom's grip, I heard a heavy thud behind me.

My dad had collapsed.

"Dad!" I scrambled to catch him and help him up. "Dad, what's wrong?"

He clutched his chest, his face frighteningly pale.

"Oh no! He's had an attack from getting so worked up! Quick! Call 911!"

After shouting, my mom frantically rushed to find the landline, only to discover that it had already been smashed to pieces.

It was as if someone drowning had just lost the last thing keeping them afloat. She sank to the floor, her whole body trembling as though she might collapse at any moment.

"Mom!"

I was holding my dad and couldn't leave him, so all I could do was glare at the two men responsible, my eyes bloodshot as I screamed, "Help him! Call 911!"

Parker flinched at my roar and hurriedly fumbled in his pocket for his phone.

But just as he unlocked it, Cameron stopped him. "Are you an idiot? Your uncle and aunt got sick on their own. We didn't lay a hand on them. Why get involved in this mess? Let's go!"

With that, the two of them fled in a panic.

My eyes nearly bulged with rage. I wanted nothing more than to tear them apart with my bare hands.

Fortunately, my parents were eventually taken to the hospital and pulled through.

I stayed by their side all night. By the time dawn broke, I was so exhausted that I finally dozed off with my head resting on the edge of the bed.

In a daze, I heard hurried footsteps and voices coming from the hallway.

"This is the room! Uncle Winston, you have to stand up for us!"

It was Cameron's voice!

My heart lurched. Afraid they'd wake my parents, I hurried out of the room and shut the door firmly behind me.

Cameron and Parker weren't alone. Several senior members of our extended family had followed them to the hospital.

The moment Cameron saw me, he began shouting loudly for everyone to hear, "Everyone, take a good look! This is my nephew, the big shot who's made it in the world!

"When I heard he worked in construction, I was just trying to help him out by giving him some business. I asked him to build a house for us.

"But he looked down on us because we're poor relatives! He cursed at us, beat us up, and threw us out!"

He raised his right hand, showing off his thumb, which was wrapped in a bandage. "Look at me! I'm an old man. How could I possibly be a match for young people like them?

"And now they've gone too far! My own brother and sister-in-law are pretending to be sick in the hospital, trying to dump all their medical bills on us and drive my whole family to ruin!"

What a shameless liar!

He'd injured his own thumb while smashing up my house the day before!

But Great-Uncle Winston Mitchell didn't care about the truth. He frowned at me reproachfully. "Adrian, just because you've made something of yourself doesn't mean you can turn your back on your own family!

"You beat your uncle up this badly, and now your parents are pretending to be sick to avoid taking responsibility? That's outrageous!"

"He's lying!" I ground out through clenched teeth. "He and Parker trashed my house and assaulted us! My parents spent the entire night in critical care before they finally stabilized. I haven't even had a chance to settle accounts with them, and now they're trying to play the victims!"

"Cut the crap!" Parker stepped forward and arrogantly interrupted me.

"Listen up, Adrian. This isn't over!" He lowered his voice, making sure only I could hear his vicious threat. "If you don't want your parents to die of shock, give me a straight answer right now.

"You'll draw up the plans, handle the construction, and front the money for the materials. Then you'll build my house properly.

"If you dare say no, I'll march straight into that hospital room and make a scene!"

As he spoke, he raised his foot and pretended he was about to kick the hospital room door.

"Don't you dare!" I glared at him, my eyes bloodshot, and planted myself firmly in front of the door.

My parents had only just been brought back from the brink of death. I absolutely could not let them suffer another shock.

Just then, a reckless idea suddenly flashed through my mind. They wanted me to build them a house, didn't they?

Fine. I'd build them a house they'd never forget.

As for what kind of house it would be, that was no longer my concern.

I suppressed the hatred in my eyes and pretended to give in, putting on a look of humiliation and reluctant surrender.

"Fine... I'll do it."

After the court hearing, Cameron tried to manipulate my dad again, appealing to their family ties in the hope that he'd persuade me to forgive the debt. But ever since recovering and leaving the hospital, my dad had learned to say no.When faced with his younger brother who'd bullied him for decades, he finally stood his ground and gave Cameron a tongue-lashing that left him thoroughly humiliated. On top of that, I'd hired two hulking six-foot-three caregivers to look after my parents. Cameron and Parker couldn't even get close to them. Before trying to throw their weight around, they now had to think twice about whether they could take on those two men.As the fifteen-day deadline drew closer, they had no choice but to try to sell the property to pay off the debt. But who would pay over $200,000 dollars for a so-called "bunker" in the village that didn't even have proper windows? They contacted real estate agents, put up advertisements, and even tried livestreaming the property

The day they moved in fell during the sweltering, humid rainy season in the south. The factory building had no interior partitions whatsoever. Its vast, empty interior resembled an indoor basketball court.Even a slightly raised voice echoed through the space for several seconds.During the day, the windows, which were positioned more than six feet above the ground, were narrow ventilation slits that could only be pushed open a crack. With the doors shut in broad daylight, the interior was as dark as a basement. The moment they turned on the lights, rows of glaring industrial metal-halide lamps overhead flooded the entire space with a stark, pale light. There wasn't a trace of warmth or coziness. Instead, the place looked more like a cold morgue. But the worst part was the complete lack of basic living facilities. There was no kitchen and certainly no comfortable, private bathroom.Whenever they wanted to cook, they had no choice but to set up a portable gas burner in the middle

Parker's hands trembled as he swiped to answer the call, accidentally putting it on speakerphone."Parker! You son of a bitch! How dare you make fools of our entire family!" Tessa's father roared furiously through the phone."Sir... please, just let me explain. It's not what you think. Someone set me up..." Parker immediately wilted. He repeatedly bowed toward the phone, his voice trembling on the verge of tears."Explain, my ass! I've seen the video. You told me that was a $500,000 minimalist villa? It's obviously a chemical plant workshop! You're a liar, and you're already saddled with over $200,000 in corporate debt!"Did you plan to trick my daughter into marrying you so you could use the Bennett family's money to clean up your mess?!""No! Sir, I swear that's not what I meant! I truly love Tessa..."Seeing his son apologizing like a whipped dog, Cameron snatched the phone from him and started cursing at the screen. "What the hell are you yelling for? Think you're something s

Upon hearing that, Parker's eyes widened sharply, and his entire body went rigid.I let out a cold laugh, making sure every word hit home. "Tessa's family finally agreed to your marriage on one condition: you had to own a decent house in the city, paid for in full."When you couldn't afford one, you lied and told them you'd built a 500,000-dollar, high-tech luxury villa back home, paid for outright. You wanted to make the marriage a done deal first, then slowly get your hands on her family's money after the wedding. Isn't that right?""How... how do you know that?!" Cold sweat broke out across Parker's forehead. He stared at me in sheer panic."You've been bragging about it all over the village. Did you really think everyone else was deaf?" I scoffed."Parker, you might be able to get away with refusing to repay an individual. But when you owe a major corporation construction costs, our legal department will apply to the court for an asset freeze tomorrow."Once that happens, you

What stood before everyone was a rectangular, box-shaped building. The walls were absurdly thick. The windows were positioned two meters above the ground, and a steel framework supported an exceptionally high roof. There were no interior partitions at all. It was a textbook industrial factory building. The smile on Cameron's face froze completely. He rubbed his eyes in disbelief. "Adrian... Th-this is the villa you designed? How the hell is anyone supposed to live here?"Parker looked as if he'd been struck by lightning. He whipped around and roared at me, "Adrian! You son of a bitch! Are you screwing around with me? Where's my marital house? What monstrosity did you build for me?"He brandished his fists and charged toward me, but several burly workers standing behind me immediately grabbed him and pinned him down.I calmly pulled the contract out of my bag and looked at him coldly. "Parker, I told you from the beginning that I specialize in industrial architecture."This buildi

The moment I gave in, Parker burst out laughing triumphantly. "See? You should've done that from the start. Why make me force your hand?""You're right, Parker. We're family, after all." I forced a strained smile. "But since we're building a house, we should follow the proper procedures and sign a contract."The smile froze on Parker's face. "What contract?"I took them to my car, retrieved the contract, and handed it to him."Regulations are strict these days. If we're going to use company materials, we need the proper paperwork. Otherwise, even if I secretly take materials from the company, and the company finds out, you'll be held liable as the homeowner, too."You don't want to get dragged into a lawsuit before you even move into your new house, do you?"Parker took the contract and flipped through it with a frown.Page after page was packed with technical jargon: "design specifications", "construction standards", "material requirements"...His eyes glazed over. Irritated,
