Chapter 4

Author: Ginger King
The moment I gave in, Parker burst out laughing triumphantly. "See? You should've done that from the start. Why make me force your hand?"

"You're right, Parker. We're family, after all." I forced a strained smile. "But since we're building a house, we should follow the proper procedures and sign a contract."

The smile froze on Parker's face. "What contract?"

I took them to my car, retrieved the contract, and handed it to him.

"Regulations are strict these days. If we're going to use company materials, we need the proper paperwork. Otherwise, even if I secretly take materials from the company, and the company finds out, you'll be held liable as the homeowner, too.

"You don't want to get dragged into a lawsuit before you even move into your new house, do you?"

Parker took the contract and flipped through it with a frown.

Page after page was packed with technical jargon: "design specifications", "construction standards", "material requirements"...

His eyes glazed over. Irritated, he asked, "Is any of this actually necessary?"

I adopted the same professional demeanor I used with clients and answered sincerely, "Of course it is. With a contract, the house will be legally compliant. No one will be able to find fault with it.

"Besides, the contract clearly states that I'll cover the material costs upfront. You can pay me back later.

"Once the house is finished, you'll be able to marry your bride in style. There's no rush. You can repay me little by little afterward."

At that, Parker's eyes lit up.

I didn't need to be a mind reader to know what he was thinking. He intended to get something for nothing, and he had no intention of paying me back.

"Don't worry! Once I get married and collect the wedding gifts, I'll pay you back!"

Grinning from ear to ear, he eagerly signed his name on the contract.

Over the next three months, I deliberately turned down several projects so I could prioritize designing Parker's new house.

I hired the construction crew myself. They were all people I knew who specialized in industrial buildings.

I gave them instructions privately: "Follow the blueprints. Don't ask questions or say anything. I'll pay you as agreed."

The foreman, Roger Floyd, looked over the plans and chuckled. "Adrian, no one's going to be able to live in this thing once it's built."

"It doesn't need to be livable. It just needs to meet the requirements of the contract."

Several times during construction, Cameron and Parker tried to come by and inspect the progress. Each time, I managed to distract them with a few jokes and excuses until they left.

Parker had always been lazy, to begin with. After a few visits, he stopped showing up altogether. Nevertheless, he never stopped bragging to everyone he met that I'd designed a million-dollar "ultramodern, minimalist, high-tech villa" for him.

Finally, one week before Parker's wedding, construction was complete.

On the day of the handover, the whole village turned out to see the finished house.

People gathered around the site, chatting excitedly and holding up their phones to take pictures. The newly built structure was completely hidden beneath an enormous tarp, and everyone waited for the big reveal.

Cameron and Parker had even dressed up in brand-new suits, their faces glowing with excitement.

"Well, Adrian, looks like you've finally learned to behave," Parker said as he walked over to me, blowing a ring of cigarette smoke into the air. "Once we pull that tarp off, all the bad blood between our families will be water under the bridge."

I looked at him with a faint, knowing smile, gripping the contract and a thick stack of receipts tightly in my hand. "Of course, Parker. Are you ready to have your mind blown?"

"The moment has arrived! Pull the curtain!"

At Roger's command, the enormous tarp was yanked away in an instant.

The noisy, bustling scene fell into an abrupt, total silence, as if someone had hit the 'pause' button on the entire world.

For a long moment, no one spoke.

Finally, someone broke the dead silence.

"What... what the hell is that? A bomb shelter?"

After the court hearing, Cameron tried to manipulate my dad again, appealing to their family ties in the hope that he'd persuade me to forgive the debt. But ever since recovering and leaving the hospital, my dad had learned to say no.When faced with his younger brother who'd bullied him for decades, he finally stood his ground and gave Cameron a tongue-lashing that left him thoroughly humiliated. On top of that, I'd hired two hulking six-foot-three caregivers to look after my parents. Cameron and Parker couldn't even get close to them. Before trying to throw their weight around, they now had to think twice about whether they could take on those two men.As the fifteen-day deadline drew closer, they had no choice but to try to sell the property to pay off the debt. But who would pay over $200,000 dollars for a so-called "bunker" in the village that didn't even have proper windows? They contacted real estate agents, put up advertisements, and even tried livestreaming the property

The day they moved in fell during the sweltering, humid rainy season in the south. The factory building had no interior partitions whatsoever. Its vast, empty interior resembled an indoor basketball court.Even a slightly raised voice echoed through the space for several seconds.During the day, the windows, which were positioned more than six feet above the ground, were narrow ventilation slits that could only be pushed open a crack. With the doors shut in broad daylight, the interior was as dark as a basement. The moment they turned on the lights, rows of glaring industrial metal-halide lamps overhead flooded the entire space with a stark, pale light. There wasn't a trace of warmth or coziness. Instead, the place looked more like a cold morgue. But the worst part was the complete lack of basic living facilities. There was no kitchen and certainly no comfortable, private bathroom.Whenever they wanted to cook, they had no choice but to set up a portable gas burner in the middle

Parker's hands trembled as he swiped to answer the call, accidentally putting it on speakerphone."Parker! You son of a bitch! How dare you make fools of our entire family!" Tessa's father roared furiously through the phone."Sir... please, just let me explain. It's not what you think. Someone set me up..." Parker immediately wilted. He repeatedly bowed toward the phone, his voice trembling on the verge of tears."Explain, my ass! I've seen the video. You told me that was a $500,000 minimalist villa? It's obviously a chemical plant workshop! You're a liar, and you're already saddled with over $200,000 in corporate debt!"Did you plan to trick my daughter into marrying you so you could use the Bennett family's money to clean up your mess?!""No! Sir, I swear that's not what I meant! I truly love Tessa..."Seeing his son apologizing like a whipped dog, Cameron snatched the phone from him and started cursing at the screen. "What the hell are you yelling for? Think you're something s

Upon hearing that, Parker's eyes widened sharply, and his entire body went rigid.I let out a cold laugh, making sure every word hit home. "Tessa's family finally agreed to your marriage on one condition: you had to own a decent house in the city, paid for in full."When you couldn't afford one, you lied and told them you'd built a 500,000-dollar, high-tech luxury villa back home, paid for outright. You wanted to make the marriage a done deal first, then slowly get your hands on her family's money after the wedding. Isn't that right?""How... how do you know that?!" Cold sweat broke out across Parker's forehead. He stared at me in sheer panic."You've been bragging about it all over the village. Did you really think everyone else was deaf?" I scoffed."Parker, you might be able to get away with refusing to repay an individual. But when you owe a major corporation construction costs, our legal department will apply to the court for an asset freeze tomorrow."Once that happens, you

What stood before everyone was a rectangular, box-shaped building. The walls were absurdly thick. The windows were positioned two meters above the ground, and a steel framework supported an exceptionally high roof. There were no interior partitions at all. It was a textbook industrial factory building. The smile on Cameron's face froze completely. He rubbed his eyes in disbelief. "Adrian... Th-this is the villa you designed? How the hell is anyone supposed to live here?"Parker looked as if he'd been struck by lightning. He whipped around and roared at me, "Adrian! You son of a bitch! Are you screwing around with me? Where's my marital house? What monstrosity did you build for me?"He brandished his fists and charged toward me, but several burly workers standing behind me immediately grabbed him and pinned him down.I calmly pulled the contract out of my bag and looked at him coldly. "Parker, I told you from the beginning that I specialize in industrial architecture."This buildi
