Chapter 4

Ivana's POV

The sweet stench of the gray gas hit my throat like liquid lead. My lungs screamed as my vision swam, the red emergency lights warping into distorted smears of blood.

I couldn't afford to panic. Panic was a luxury for people who hadn't spent their teenage years being poisoned, drugged, and locked in steel boxes until their bodies learned to adapt.

Instead, my brain clicked into cold, survival mode. I reached down, ripped off a thick strip of my black sleeve, poured the tiny splash of water left in my flask over the fabric, and slammed it over my nose and mouth. I dropped to my knees, pressing my cheek against the cold concrete floor—gas rises, oxygen stays low. Basic physics.

I didn't waste a single calorie pounding on the reinforced door. I started crawling, my fingers trailing along the perimeter wall, mapping the corners and feeling for seams in the metal paneling.

One... two... three seconds.

The paralyzing weight in my limbs was settling fast, but my heart wasn't failing. My throat wasn't closing.

It's a neuro-sedative, I realized, my mind sharpening through the haze. Not a lethal toxin.

Which meant they didn't want a corpse. They wanted a prisoner.

Which also meant I still had value.

The moment that single truth locked into place, I stopped looking for an immediate exit. I rolled onto my back in the center of the dark room, threw my arms out limp, relaxed my facial muscles, and waited. If they wanted me alive, somebody was eventually going to have to walk through that door to collect their package.

And I was going to make them regret opening it.

Ten seconds.

Twenty.

Finally, the locks hissed. The door swung open, casting a bright rectangular slice of light across the concrete floor.

"Check her," a guard muttered from the doorway. "Keep your rifle up."

Boots clicked against the floor, stopping right beside my head. A guard bent down, reaching two gloved fingers toward the side of my neck to feel for a carotid pulse.

The exact millisecond his fingers brushed my skin, I reacted.

I grabbed his collar with both hands, twisting my body sideways to drive my knee straight into the side of his kneecap with a brutal SNAP. He screamed, but I was already moving. I grabbed his head, violently torqued his neck until he went limp, and yanked his body over mine to act as a human shield just as his partner at the door opened fire.

Thump! Thump!

Two rounds buried themselves harmlessly into my shield's Kevlar vest. I unholstered the falling guard's sidearm from his hip, locked my arm over his shoulder, and fired twice through the dark gap.

The second guard collapsed backward into the corridor with a thud, two holes punched cleanly through his chest.

Well, that was fun.

I dumped the dead weight, snatched three fresh magazines from his belt, and sprinted out into the hallway, the emergency sirens still screaming violently against the walls.

I didn't head for the emergency stairwell leading up to the exit. Anyone else would have run for daylight. But my brother wasn't outside, and whoever had pulled this trap was still breathing. I ducked left, plunging deeper into the facility toward the central command hub.

Time to hunt.

I reached the reinforced glass doors of the Sector Command room, kicked the lock out, and swept the room. Empty. The techs had evacuated the moment the containment breach alarm sounded.

Monitors were still flickering with active security feeds, server towers humming under the desks. I pulled a sleek black flash drive from my vest, jammed it straight into the central terminal's master port, and executed an automated deep-scrape protocol.

Copying server logs...

Extracting asset transfer manifests...

"Come on," I muttered, my eyes darting between the screen and the hallway door. "Where did you move Luka?"

80%... 88%... 94%...

A sudden, thunder of synchronized footsteps vibrated through the floorboards.

100%. Transfer Complete.

I snatched the drive out of the terminal, sliding it into my belt pocket just as a dozen boots rounded the corner outside. Before I could sprint toward the rear shaft, black-clad strike team guards flooded through both entrances, their weapon lights cutting through the red emergency glow.

Twelve laser sights locked dead-center onto my chest, forehead, and throat.

I froze, backing up until my shoulder blades hit the cool server rack. I slowly raised my captured handgun with one hand, pointing the barrel straight at the red emergency fuel line running along the ceiling above us.

I let a cold, slow smile spread across my face.

"If one of us sneezes," I purred, my voice completely steady, "we're all going to turn into ash."

Nobody moved. The guards held their breath, fingers tight against their triggers, the tension in the narrow room pulling so taut it felt like glass about to shatter.

Then... something strange happened.

Without a word, every single guard in the room suddenly lowered their weapons, snapping their rifles down to a low-ready position.

It definitely wasn't because of my threat.

I watched their posture shift. Every single man straightened his spine. Their eyes dropped to the floor. The chaotic energy in the room completely vanished, replaced by a terrifying silence. Nobody breathed. The room no longer seemed to belong to the squad, or the agency, or me.

It belonged to whoever had just stepped through the broken door.

I slowly lowered my gun, turning my head toward the entrance, fully expecting to see the Director standing there with his usual smug, cold expression.

Instead... my breath hitched.

 Alpha Alfonso.

He wasn't flanked by politicians or media cameras. He wasn't wearing the black-tie tuxedo from the gala. He was wearing a dark, tailored charcoal suit, his coat unbuttoned, his hands casually resting in his trouser pockets.

He stepped over the threshold, his boots making no sound against the tile. He didn't look at his guards. His dark, impossibly deep eyes locked straight onto mine.

He looked at me with the unsettling certainty of a man who had personally written every line of the script I had been playing out all night. He had known I would be in this room before I even woke up on the cold floor.

Alfonso stopped three feet away from me, the scent of rain and expensive cedarwood drifting off him, completely washing away the chemical smell of the gas.

He looked me up and down, his jaw tight, a faint, unreadable shift in his expression.

"So..." he murmured, his voice a deep, quiet baritone that seemed to vibrate straight through the floor.

"...you're Ivy."

  • The Assassin Alpha's Heir   Chapter 33 — Seraphina?

Alfonso’s POVI was relieved she had finally thrown in the towel and picked the less painful route. Genuinely. Seeing her tied to that gurney looking like a ghost had made my chest hollow out in ways I hated thinking about.Yet, as I paced the perimeter courtyard, this weird, uneasy prickle settled under my collar, and for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why. It was like an itch right beneath the bone. Everything was falling into place—tactically, biologically—so why did my gut feel like it was twisting into a hangman’s noose?I couldn’t stand being inside the house another second.“Mateo,” I barked, spotting him crossing the tarmac near the secondary motor pool. “Drop the manifests. We’re running the ridge.”Mateo stopped, wiping grease off his good hand with a rag, his brow furrowing as he jogged over. “The ridge? Alfonso, the sun barely crested the treeline. Besides…” He hesitated, looking at me with that irritating, cautious edge. “It’s been months since you let your Lycan o

Ivy's POVI was screaming.Tearing my vocal cords to bloody shreds, the sound ripping out of my chest so violent and animalistic it didn't even sound like a human being anymore. The pain wasn't just burning—it felt like someone was pouring molten lead straight down my spinal cord and scrubbing my nerve endings with broken glass. My back arched completely off the gurney, the heavy leather restraints groaning, the titanium brackets rattling violently against the frame. White, blinding agony detonated behind my eyes with every single ragged breath."Stop!" I shrieked, choking on my own spit, hot tears streaming blindly down my temples into my hair. "Please, stop! Callisto, stop! Shut it down! I'll do it! I'll go with the other option, I swear to God! Just pull the damn line!"The monitors above my head were squealing in a continuous, deafening alarm."I'll do the natural approach!" I sobbed, stripped of pride, dismantled down to nerve and bone. "I'll blindfold myself if I have to! I'll t

  • The Assassin Alpha's Heir   Chapter 31 — Not A 3-Year-Old

Ivy's POVI woke up wrapped in something warm. Not just warm—ridiculously, dangerously comforting. It was like sinking into a heavy down comforter fresh out of an industrial dryer, radiating this deep, steady heat that practically melted the residual ache right out of my exhausted limbs. For a solid ten seconds, my brain just hovered in that lazy, half-conscious bliss, forgetting that my life was a certified trash fire.I shifted slightly, stretching my cramped muscles, and my hand slid over something surprisingly firm yet soft.My fingers curled. I gave it a testing squeeze.Ouuu.Firm, solid muscle with just enough give. Nice. I liked that texture a lot. So, naturally, without opening my eyes, I gave it another full, shameless squeeze."Well, I certainly didn't peg you as the kind who has an ass-squeezing kink, Solokov."The voice was a deep, gravelly morning rumble, vibrating directly beneath my ear.My eyes snapped wide open. All the drowsiness evaporated into thin air, replaced b

  • The Assassin Alpha's Heir   Chapter 30 — I've Got You, Ivy

Alfonso's POVShe was finally sleeping. Her breathing had leveled out, but I hadn't moved an inch. I hadn't let go of her hand, hadn't stretched my legs, and sure as hell hadn't left her side since the moment she opened those stubborn, half-dead eyes and glared murder right through my skull. The door hissed open, and Callisto stepped in, his white lab coat rustling as he carried a digital clipboard. He looked exhausted, his graying hair slightly rumpled, dark circles bruising the skin under his wire-rimmed glasses.Callisto checked the fluid lines, tapped the vitals monitor, and shone a tiny penlight over Ivana's closed eyelids. She didn't react as she was out cold.Callisto turned to me, lowering the light, his gaze dropping to where my chair was practically wedged against the edge of the titanium gurney."Her core temp is down to thirty-seven degrees," Callisto said softly, keeping his voice low enough not to disturb the quiet. "The neural inflammation is subsiding. You've been sitt

  • The Assassin Alpha's Heir   Chapter 29 — In Her Head

Ivy's POVIt was so damn peaceful in here.It had been a very long while since I'd last slipped into this place. Seven years old? Eight, maybe? The last time I remembered retreating into this paradise of mine was a few months after Kessler had hauled me out of that underground juvenile hellhole. Back when the conditioning drills were brand new, back when the beatings lasted until my ribs cracked and I hadn't yet figured out how to turn my heart into solid ice. Back then, when the pain got too big for a little girl's body to hold, my mind would just unhook the latch, step out the back door, and drift into this vast, endless dark. And then, drifting through the fog, I heard it.A soft voice humming a melody I didn't recognize from anywhere in the waking world. It sounded like an old, scratched record playing in an empty room, repeating the exact same verse over and over:Hey, babyLook upon me with your eyes so prettyOh, honeyWhat a lucky ~glitch~ am I to call you mineDearest childL

  • The Assassin Alpha's Heir   Chapter 28 — Everything Sucks

Alfonso's POVIvana had made her decision three days ago, and it had been a blunt, merciless NO.Her exact words had been, "Stick to the lab, Alfonso. Don't ask me again."I didn't understand it. For the life of me, I couldn't wrap my head around the logic. I had practically handed her the keys to her brother's cage on a silver platter. I offered to bring the boy right under her nose, to cut the waiting time in half, to bypass months of agonizing medical recovery. I had been almost dead certain she'd jump at the chance to get Luka faster. But then again, who the hell was I to judge? It was her body, not mine. If the thought of me touching her was that fundamentally repulsive, I wasn't about to force the issue. I was a ruthless bastard when it came to holding territory, but I wasn't a rapist. So, if she wanted the needles and the machines, she got the needles and the machines.Except today was the day Callisto moved to phase two.The doctor had spent all morning storming around the und
