LOGINIvana’s POV
My finger flexed against the trigger of the stolen handgun, my knuckle turning stark white under the red emergency lights.
He was three feet away. No body armor over his chest, no security team blocking my angle, no defensive stance. I could punch a hole straight through his throat before his brain even registered the muzzle flash.
He's going to kill me, my mind screamed. He brought a dozen men to corner me, and now he's closing the trap himself.
Instead, Alfonso casually tilted his head toward the door and gave a tiny, almost imperceptible flick of his wrist.
"Out," he said, his voice flat and quiet. "All of you."
The strike team leader blinked, his jaw dropping in disbelief. "Sir? She’s an elite operative, she’s armed, and she’s already taken down—"
"I won't ask a second time," Alfonso interrupted, not even bothering to glance back at the man.
Without another word of protest, the twelve heavily armed guards snapped their rifles back to their shoulders, turned on their heels, and filed out of the command room like obedient dogs. The glass door slid shut behind them, leaving us in an insanely suffocating silence.
My suspicion spiked straight through the ceiling. I didn't lower my weapon an inch. Why the hell would a mafia boss—a man who had survived three hit attempts this week alone—willingly clear the room to stand completely defenseless in front of an active assassin?
He definitely wasn't stupid…..right?
"You're either arrogant or suicidal," I growled, stepping sideways to keep my back glued to the server rack, my barrel fixed dead center on his chest. "I have a bullet lined up with your heart, Alpha."
Alfonso didn't blink at my words. He didn't raise his hands. In fact, a faint, terrifyingly calm glint of amusement flickered in his dark eyes as he took one slow, deliberate step closer.
"You won't shoot," he murmured, his tone as smooth as silk.
"Try me," I hissed, raising my jaw. "I've killed men for far less than backing me into a corner."
"You shoot me, and the location of your brother dies with me," he said, stopping just out of arm's reach. He folded his arms over his broad chest, towering over me without throwing a single punch. "And despite your fiery reputation, Ivana... you didn't risk your life breaking into a bio-hazard sub-level just to leave empty-handed."
A bitter surge of adrenaline hit my stomach. I hated how easily he read me. I hated that he wasn't yelling, wasn't threatening, and wasn't acting like a man held at gunpoint.
"Why am I alive?" I demanded, my voice dropping into a lethal, low rasp. "Why pull this elaborate, twisted game? If you wanted me dead, you could have let your squad finish it in the hall."
Alfonso looked at me, his gaze scanning my face with an intense focus that made my skin prickle under my suit.
"Because you were never sent here to kill me," he said flatly.
My entire reality cracked right down the middle.
"What?" I choked out, a wave of pure disbelief washing over me. "I spent two days mapping your security routes! I was literally on the gantry taking the shot!"
"You were on the gantry because the Director put a scope in your hands to test your discipline," Alfonso revealed, stepping closer until I could feel the heat radiating off his body. "I had the contract drawn out about three weeks ago. I knew about the open bounty. I knew every single competitor who set foot in the Grand Horizon Plaza tonight."
My heart gave a violent thud against my ribs. "You... you bought the hit?"
"I authorized it," he corrected smoothly, his dark eyes never leaving mine. "I needed to see if the only compatible biological match in the entire eastern hemisphere was as sharp as her file claimed. You bypassed security, neutralized three units, cleared the gantry, and still had the instinct to hunt down information when the trap sprung. You passed."
I stared at him, my brain frantically trying to piece together the terrifying scope of what he was saying. The open bounty, the sudden target change, my brother's reappearance... None of it was a coincidence. It was a perfectly orchestrated filter, and I had walked right into the center of his web.
Alfonso reached into his dark jacket pocket. I instantly tightened my grip on the gun, but he simply pulled out a folder—the final, master copy of the contract—and held it out in the space between us.
"The agency didn't corner you, Ivy. I did," he said, his deep baritone cutting through the hum of the cooling fans. "And now the game is over."
I glared at the leather folder, refusing to touch it. "I don't sign contracts even with guns in my head."
"Then lower the gun," he countered calmly, his gaze unyielding.
He didn't move. He just stood there, looking upsettingly dominant and unshakeable, offering me a path out of the dark maze I had been trapped in for four long years.
"You have one choice, Ivy," Alfonso whispered, the words with a terrifying finality.
"Walk away right now, and lose your brother forever."
He leaned in slightly, his breath warm against my ear as his voice dropped into an intoxicating, dangerous whisper.
"Or sign the contract... and become the mother of my heir.”
Alfonso’s POVI was relieved she had finally thrown in the towel and picked the less painful route. Genuinely. Seeing her tied to that gurney looking like a ghost had made my chest hollow out in ways I hated thinking about.Yet, as I paced the perimeter courtyard, this weird, uneasy prickle settled under my collar, and for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why. It was like an itch right beneath the bone. Everything was falling into place—tactically, biologically—so why did my gut feel like it was twisting into a hangman’s noose?I couldn’t stand being inside the house another second.“Mateo,” I barked, spotting him crossing the tarmac near the secondary motor pool. “Drop the manifests. We’re running the ridge.”Mateo stopped, wiping grease off his good hand with a rag, his brow furrowing as he jogged over. “The ridge? Alfonso, the sun barely crested the treeline. Besides…” He hesitated, looking at me with that irritating, cautious edge. “It’s been months since you let your Lycan o
Ivy's POVI was screaming.Tearing my vocal cords to bloody shreds, the sound ripping out of my chest so violent and animalistic it didn't even sound like a human being anymore. The pain wasn't just burning—it felt like someone was pouring molten lead straight down my spinal cord and scrubbing my nerve endings with broken glass. My back arched completely off the gurney, the heavy leather restraints groaning, the titanium brackets rattling violently against the frame. White, blinding agony detonated behind my eyes with every single ragged breath."Stop!" I shrieked, choking on my own spit, hot tears streaming blindly down my temples into my hair. "Please, stop! Callisto, stop! Shut it down! I'll do it! I'll go with the other option, I swear to God! Just pull the damn line!"The monitors above my head were squealing in a continuous, deafening alarm."I'll do the natural approach!" I sobbed, stripped of pride, dismantled down to nerve and bone. "I'll blindfold myself if I have to! I'll t
Ivy's POVI woke up wrapped in something warm. Not just warm—ridiculously, dangerously comforting. It was like sinking into a heavy down comforter fresh out of an industrial dryer, radiating this deep, steady heat that practically melted the residual ache right out of my exhausted limbs. For a solid ten seconds, my brain just hovered in that lazy, half-conscious bliss, forgetting that my life was a certified trash fire.I shifted slightly, stretching my cramped muscles, and my hand slid over something surprisingly firm yet soft.My fingers curled. I gave it a testing squeeze.Ouuu.Firm, solid muscle with just enough give. Nice. I liked that texture a lot. So, naturally, without opening my eyes, I gave it another full, shameless squeeze."Well, I certainly didn't peg you as the kind who has an ass-squeezing kink, Solokov."The voice was a deep, gravelly morning rumble, vibrating directly beneath my ear.My eyes snapped wide open. All the drowsiness evaporated into thin air, replaced b
Alfonso's POVShe was finally sleeping. Her breathing had leveled out, but I hadn't moved an inch. I hadn't let go of her hand, hadn't stretched my legs, and sure as hell hadn't left her side since the moment she opened those stubborn, half-dead eyes and glared murder right through my skull. The door hissed open, and Callisto stepped in, his white lab coat rustling as he carried a digital clipboard. He looked exhausted, his graying hair slightly rumpled, dark circles bruising the skin under his wire-rimmed glasses.Callisto checked the fluid lines, tapped the vitals monitor, and shone a tiny penlight over Ivana's closed eyelids. She didn't react as she was out cold.Callisto turned to me, lowering the light, his gaze dropping to where my chair was practically wedged against the edge of the titanium gurney."Her core temp is down to thirty-seven degrees," Callisto said softly, keeping his voice low enough not to disturb the quiet. "The neural inflammation is subsiding. You've been sitt
Ivy's POVIt was so damn peaceful in here.It had been a very long while since I'd last slipped into this place. Seven years old? Eight, maybe? The last time I remembered retreating into this paradise of mine was a few months after Kessler had hauled me out of that underground juvenile hellhole. Back when the conditioning drills were brand new, back when the beatings lasted until my ribs cracked and I hadn't yet figured out how to turn my heart into solid ice. Back then, when the pain got too big for a little girl's body to hold, my mind would just unhook the latch, step out the back door, and drift into this vast, endless dark. And then, drifting through the fog, I heard it.A soft voice humming a melody I didn't recognize from anywhere in the waking world. It sounded like an old, scratched record playing in an empty room, repeating the exact same verse over and over:Hey, babyLook upon me with your eyes so prettyOh, honeyWhat a lucky ~glitch~ am I to call you mineDearest childL
Alfonso's POVIvana had made her decision three days ago, and it had been a blunt, merciless NO.Her exact words had been, "Stick to the lab, Alfonso. Don't ask me again."I didn't understand it. For the life of me, I couldn't wrap my head around the logic. I had practically handed her the keys to her brother's cage on a silver platter. I offered to bring the boy right under her nose, to cut the waiting time in half, to bypass months of agonizing medical recovery. I had been almost dead certain she'd jump at the chance to get Luka faster. But then again, who the hell was I to judge? It was her body, not mine. If the thought of me touching her was that fundamentally repulsive, I wasn't about to force the issue. I was a ruthless bastard when it came to holding territory, but I wasn't a rapist. So, if she wanted the needles and the machines, she got the needles and the machines.Except today was the day Callisto moved to phase two.The doctor had spent all morning storming around the und
