The Sterling Estate did not look like a home. It looked like a fortress built to keep the rest of the world at a polite, terrifying distance.

Clara stepped out of the black executive sedan at precisely seven-fifteen in the morning, her single hard-shell suitcase humming against the pristine granite driveway. High up on a secluded ridge overlooking the city, the mansion was a masterclass in modern minimalist architecture—soaring black steel, towering glass panels, and absolute, oppressive silence.

"Miss Mercer," a warm, aged voice greeted her at the double mahogany doors.

An elderly woman in a crisp grey uniform offered a polite, practiced smile. "I am Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper. Mr. Sterling has already departed for his morning briefing at the trading firm, but young Master Toby has been waiting for you since five."

"Good morning, Mrs. Gable," Clara replied, offering a genuine, relaxing smile that she rarely used on the floor of Sterling HQ. "Please, just Clara while we're off the clock."

"Oh, my dear," Mrs. Gable chuckled softly, taking Clara’s coat with practiced speed. "Around here, nobody is ever truly off the clock. Especially not when the Master is in residence."

Before Clara could digest that warning, a blur of motion exploded down the floating marble staircase.

"Clara!"

Toby skidded across the polished floor in tiny flannel pajamas, holding a wooden train engine like a weapon. He stopped two feet away, his lower lip tucked in as he inspected her suitcase with suspicious intensity.

"You brought your stuff," Toby noted, his bright blue eyes—so strikingly identical to his father's—widening. "That means you can't run away like the lady who smelled like old flowers."

Clara dropped to one knee, keeping her navy silk blouse from touching the floor. "I signed a contract, Toby. Executive secretaries do not run away from contracts. We execute them."

Toby blinked, thoroughly satisfied by the answer. "Good. Come on. I picked your room."

Mrs. Gable opened her mouth, looking distinctly nervous. "Master Toby, your father explicitly requested Miss Mercer be established in the west guest wing—"

"The west wing is boring!" Toby interjected with terrifying authority, grabbing Clara by the thumb and pulling her toward the grand staircase. "It's near the dusty paintings. She's staying in the east suite."

Clara allowed herself to be towed up the stairs, amused by the small dictator's momentum. But when they reached the top of the second-floor landing, her smile slowly faded.

The east suite wasn't just near the main living quarters. The heavy double doors Toby pushed open were located directly across a glass-walled catwalk from another set of massive dark oak doors—doors that were currently cracked open just enough to reveal a sprawling private study filled with dark leather, charcoal walls, and a massive desk.

Damon’s private suite.

"Toby," Clara said carefully, surveying the plush, cream-toned bedroom with its king-sized bed and floor-to-ceiling balcony views. "Is this floor off-limits?"

"No," Toby declared innocently, hopping onto the edge of the mattress. "Daddy sleeps right there. So if I have a nightmare about giant squid, I only have to walk five steps to hit both of you."

Clara closed her eyes for a brief second, calculating the immediate violation of her personal space buffer zone. Living under the same roof was one thing; sleeping ten yards away from her cold, hyper-intense boss across an open indoor atrium was an entirely different level of hazard.

By eleven at night, the estate had settled into a heavy, suffocating quiet.

Clara sat at the small writing desk in her new room, her laptop casting a cool blue glow across her face. She was clad in a simple pair of silk sleep trousers and a soft gray camisole—informal attire she would rather die than let anyone at Sterling HQ see her in.

She had spent four hours sorting through Toby’s chaotic school schedules, setting up an automated calendar, and reviewing Damon’s early-morning Tokyo conference calls.

Her neck throbbed with a dull ache. Needing water, she quietly cracked her door open and stepped out onto the glass catwalk. The floor’s low ambient nightlights cast long, dramatic shadows across the open atrium below.

She took three steps toward the hidden kitchen kitchenette on the landing before a shadow detached itself from the doorway of the master suite.

Clara froze.

Damon Sterling stepped directly into the dimly lit corridor.

He wasn't wearing his Italian suit. The armor was completely gone. He wore a pair of dark tailor-fitted lounge pants and a half-unbuttoned black shirt, sleeves rolled up past his forearms to reveal lean, corded muscle. His dark hair was slightly damp from a late shower, falling recklessly over his forehead instead of being slicked back into his usual ruthless boardroom style.

He stopped dead in his tracks, his dark eyes locking onto her.

The silence between them stretched, thick and suffocatingly hot.

Damon’s gaze traveled slowly—deliberately—from her bare shoulders, down the curve of her waist, to her bare feet gripping the cold hardwood floor, before dragging all the way back up to her eyes. The raw, unfiltered intensity in his gaze made Clara’s breath hitch in her throat.

"Miss Mercer," Damon’s voice dropped into a low, rough rasp, heavy with late-night fatigue and something far more dangerous. "What are you doing on this side of the house?"

Clara forced her spine straight, refusing to wrap her arms around herself to hide. "Toby assigned me this room, Mr. Sterling. Mrs. Gable tried to intervene, but your son can be quite... persuasive."

Damon took a step forward. The distance between them shrank to less than two feet. Clara could smell the dark bourbon on his breath mixed with the clean scent of soap.

"Toby does not set the security parameters of this house," Damon murmured, leaning down slightly until his face was inches from hers. His dark eyes flickered with a quiet, burning fire. "I told you to keep your boundaries intact, Clara."

"I am getting a glass of water," she retorted, her voice dropping to a sharp whisper, refusing to back down even as her pulse hammered violently against her ribs. "And my contract guarantees my freedom of movement outside of office hours."

Damon let out a soft, dark exhale that brushed against her cheek, making her skin tingle. He raised one hand, his thumb lightly grazing the edge of her wooden doorframe right next to her head, effectively trapping her between his frame and the wall.

"Rules are very different in the dark, Miss Mercer," Damon whispered softly, his eyes locking onto her lips. "Don't make the mistake of thinking this house is safe just because you signed a paper."

He held her gaze for one long, agonizing second before pulling back, turning on his heel, and disappearing into his dark suite without another word.

Clara stood frozen in the hallway, her lungs burning for air, realizing with terrifying clarity that the contract hadn't protected her at all.

She had just walked straight into the lion's den.

  • The Baby Matchmaker    The Boardroom Blitz

The silence lingering around the western colonnade was far louder than the resurgent roar of the surrounding ballroom. It was thick, toxic, and centered entirely on the three people standing just outside the shimmering chandelier light.Victoria Vance stood frozen, her polished mask of arrogance cracking to reveal a standard, raw fury. Her gaze was locked onto Clara’s throat—specifically, onto the hundreds of carats of Sterling family history that were currently reflecting the Plaza’s lights with blinding arrogance. The diamonds were not just jewelry; they were a statement. A statement that Clara Mercer, the lowly secretary who had ruined Victoria’s perfectly timed ambush, was currently wearing the very jewels Victoria had spent three years positioning herself to claim.Damon didn't speak immediately. He couldn't. He was still processing the sight of her. The black gown was elegant, powerful, and utterly professional, yet it somehow managed to emphasize the soft warmth of her skin far

  • The Baby Matchmaker    The Price of Presence

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was not just a venue; it was a carefully constructed vortex designed to concentrate old money, raw power, and the terrifying energy of desperate ambition into one single, shimmering space. Tonight, for the Annual Wall Street Summer Gala, it was operating at peak capacity. A thousand high-society couples, the undisputed titans of the financial world and their beautifully manicured spouses, swirled under the colossal crystal chandeliers. Their faces were animated masks of polished, blinding civility, and the low roar of their collective conversation was louder than the twenty-piece chamber orchestra struggling to be heard from the balcony. It was, by every metric, the most high-stakes, ruthless corporate environment on the planet. And Damon Sterling hated every single second of it.He stood near the western marble colonnade, his six-foot-two frame imposing even in a room filled with powerful men. He had shed the morning’s work attire for a tailored

  • The Baby Matchmaker    The Dress Code

The humidity of the Long Island morning had been replaced by the ruthless climate control of the Sterling Enterprises executive floor. Inside Damon’s corner office, the air was crisp, silent, and smelled faintly of expensive leather and ozone from the server racks.Clara stood across the obsidian desk, having just concluded her thirty-minute brief on the Vance Logistics acquisition hurdles. Her charcoal pencil skirt was immaculate, her ivory blouse crisp. Every hair from this morning’s French twist failure had been tamed back into a sleek, professional coil.Damon had been working on two screens simultaneously since they arrived, his navy suit jacket draped over his chair, sleeves rolled past his forearms. He hadn't mentioned the study trap, the proximity, or his whispered warning from the hallway a single time in five hours."Vance is pushing the closing date," Damon murmured, tapping a pen against his chin as he stared at a spreadsheet. "He wants to wait until after the Summer Gala

  • The Baby Matchmaker    The Morning After

Dawn broke over Long Island in thin, pale rays of silver, cutting through the shattered storm clouds and washing across the polished dark hardwood of the private study. Outside the floor-to-ceiling storm windows, the wild ocean gale that had battered the estate all night had finally subsided into a soft, monotonous drizzle. The heavy electronic deadbolt on the double oak doors clicked open with a soft, mechanical chirp as the mansion’s primary power grid hummed back to life. High above in the ceiling alcoves, hidden ambient LED lights flared from pitch black to a soft, warm amber.Inside, the sudden restoration of light was almost blinding.Clara stirred on the broad leather sofa, her eyelids fluttering open slowly against the glare. She wasn't cold. In fact, she felt completely cocooned, surrounded by a wall of radiating, steady warmth. It took her brain precisely three seconds to register her surroundings—and when it did, every nerve ending in her body went on high alert. She was tu

  • The Baby Matchmaker    The Trap is Set

The rain began as a low murmur against the glass floor-to-ceiling windows of the Sterling Estate, but by midnight, it had escalated into a full-scale deluge. Thunder shook the heavy foundation of the house, rattling the crystal decanters sitting on the private study’s dark mahogany sideboard.Inside the study, the atmosphere was suffocatingly warm.Clara sat at the leather conference table, surrounded by three stacks of binding financial disclosures for the Vance Logistics acquisition. Her jacket was draped over the back of her chair. Her top blouse button had come undone sometime around eleven, and a few loose strands of hair had escaped her French twist, framing her face.Across from her, Damon had shed his jacket and tie hours ago. His dark dress shirt was unbuttoned at the neck, his sleeves rolled tightly around his forearms as he scrawled red corrections across a legal brief."Section 4.2 is a trap," Clara murmured, her voice thick with late-night exhaustion. She tapped her table

  • The Baby Matchmaker    The Little Mastermind

The sun had barely crested the tree line surrounding the Sterling Estate when Clara stepped down into the sunlit marble dining room. She was back in her professional armor—a crisp ivory silk blouse, a charcoal pencil skirt, and her hair swept up into a flawless French twist. If her pulse had thundered out of control in the dark corridor ten hours ago, her face showed absolutely no trace of it.Damon was already at the head of the long mahogany table. He looked infuriatingly immaculate in a dark charcoal suit, sipping black coffee while scrolling through market updates on his tablet. The damp-haired, bare-chested ghost from midnight had completely vanished, replaced once again by the cold, unreachable CEO of Sterling Enterprises."Good morning, Mr. Sterling," Clara said smoothly, taking her seat three chairs down."Mercer," Damon acknowledged without looking up from his screen. "The car leaves in twenty minutes. Tokyo markets closed down three points. Have the briefing notes ready on t
