Leo flashed a proud smile as he gestured toward the woman standing beside him. “This is Mary Whitlock, Cat. She’s the genius behind the Omega Academy.” He introduced her after his speech. “Our warriors wouldn’t be half as skilled if it weren’t for her. I’m planning to announce her as one of us tonight. Once she’s linked to the pack, she’ll be able to communicate with everyone.”
I nodded slowly, keeping my expression neutral.
Leo paused for a beat on the other end of the link, “I’ll explain later,” he replied curtly, before closing the mind link without another word.
I kept my tone even, though the whispers behind me twisted something tight in my chest.
“Poor Luna...”
“She’s standing there like she’s invisible.”
Their voices blurred into noise. I didn’t need to hear the words to know what they were saying.
I kept my chin high. A Luna doesn’t crumble in front of her pack.
Leo’s voice cut through my thoughts. “Our warriors would’ve come back injured or worse if not for Mary. “She’s done more for this pack than you ever have,” Leo said.
My wolf, Nyra, growled inside me, matching the rumble from Ranger, Leo’s wolf, through the bond.
“I see,” I replied quietly. “Then I’m glad the pack has benefited from her work.”
Leo shot me a quick, unreadable look—surprised, perhaps, that I hadn't caused a scene.
Mary stood a little taller beside him, smiling as though she already belonged here.
Nyra’s voice echoed softly in my head. ‘Not now. Don’t lose control. Let them think you’re calm and don’t let them think you’re weak.’
I inhaled sharply and said nothing.
“Everyone!” Leo’s commanding tone silenced the murmurs. “I have an announcement to make.”
All eyes turned to him as he took Mary’s hand and stepped forward. The sight of his fingers tightening around hers made my chest tighten painfully.
“Mary Whitlock will be a member of our pack tonight, under the full moon. From this night on, she and her wolf, Maya, are one with the Crescent Moon Pack!” he declared proudly.
The crowd erupted in applause, and Mary smiled at me, mocking me. I gulped and looked for Brian so we could leave, but he was clinging closely to his father.
I decided to leave so they would celebrate together.
But before I reached the door, Leo’s voice snapped through the air. “Cat? Don’t go yet. We present ourselves as a united front tonight.”
His Alpha command caused a shiver down my spine, and Nyra let out a low growl.
I closed the door and walked inside, holding back the tears that threatened to spill from my eyes. People kept laughing and dancing, and I couldn’t make out what some were saying in the blur.
When Leo’s Beta and Gamma were done with their speeches, we were taken to the pack’s training ground to welcome Mary as one of us.
As Luna, I stood beside Leo while Mary changed into a white garment meant to symbolize purity and acceptance.
Leo leaned close to my ear. “Smile, Catherine, and accept her warmly. It’s in your best interest. When this is over, we’ll go back to being a happy family with Brian, and you won’t ask questions. Understand?”
I didn’t turn to him. “Are you threatening me?” I whispered, eyes locked on Mary as she knelt under the moonlight.
“No,” he scoffed. “But I won’t tolerate another scene. You’ll obey me as your Alpha.”
“Is she your mistress?” I asked through the mind link, snapping my gaze toward him.
For a moment, his eyes flared red, the faint color that always appeared before he shifted, and his jaw tightened. He didn’t need to answer. His silence was enough.
"Catherine, don’t jump to conclusions.” he growled, “Show some gratitude and stop embarrassing me.”
The ritual began. Mary knelt beneath the moon, dressed in white.
His stare burned into me, “Welcome Mary Whitlock into the pack, now.”
Brian’s face flashed in my mind, and my breath hitched. I couldn’t risk losing him. Not tonight.
I stepped forward when the silence demanded it. “Mary Whitlock,” I said, my voice steady as stone. “As Luna of the Crescent Moon Pack, I welcome you and your wolf, Maya.”
My gaze didn’t leave hers. “May the Moon Goddess watch over your choices. You may shift.”
She smiled sweetly before she screamed, her bones breaking. The crowd cheered, and Leo smiled proudly behind me.
I watched her shift beneath the moonlight, every bone snapping like a promise I intended to break later.
The pack cheered. Leo smiled.
A strong sense of unease welled up inside me. Would my life be affected by this from now on? ******
Back in my room, the laughter from the celebration still echoed through the pack house. I sat on the bed, numb, staring at the muted glow of the television across the room.
A reporter’s voice filled the silence.
“Dr. Elias Wolfe, the renowned Lycan medic, saved yet another critically injured soldier today. His recovery methods have been called miraculous…”
The screen showed him—confident, calm, a faint smile on his lips as he treated a patient.
My breath caught.
Elias.
My childhood friend.
We used to dream of changing the world together.
Until I married Leo… and lost all contact with him.
On the screen, Elias turned to the camera—bright-eyed, brilliant, everything he was always meant to be.
The reporter asked, “Is there anyone who influenced your journey as a medic?”
Elias paused, thoughtful. Then he smiled—soft, almost nostalgic.
“Once,” he said, “I had a partner. If she were still practicing medicine, I’m certain she’d be extraordinary.”
My heart squeezed so tight it hurt.
He still remembered.
I reached out and touched the screen lightly, my fingers brushing the image of the life I once dreamed of.
Once, I used to shine like that, too.
I swallowed hard, shook my head, pushing the memories of the past aside, and forced myself to face my life head-on.
It’s already 9 o’clock—why hasn’t Leo come back yet?
•CATHERINE•[A YEAR LATER]I had Kane against my chest in his carrier, one hand pressed gently against his back as I walked down the corridor beside the officer who had come to escort me. Kane was eleven months old and entirely unbothered by his surroundings, his dark eyes moving with lazy curiosity over every new ceiling and every new light as we passed beneath them.He had Leo's eyes.I had asked for this visit myself. Leo had tried to talk me out of it. In the end he had driven me here and waited in the car.The officer stopped outside a door and nodded to me. I stepped through.Elias was already seated at the table on the other side of the glass partition. He looked up when I came in.I sat down across from him and settled Kane more comfortably against my chest.Elias looked at the baby for a long moment before looking back at me.I didn't give him time to open with whatever he had prepared."I came to tell you something," I said. "Not to argue. Not to shout at you. Just to say i
•CATHERINE•Viktor's funeral was held three days later. The pack chose a burial ground at the edge of Eclipseborn territory, where the treeline opened into a wide, quiet clearing.I dressed slowly that morning.I stood in front of the mirror for a long time without really seeing my reflection. I kept thinking about the last real conversation Viktor and I had in that clinic room.If I had known that would be our last conversation, I would've told him the truth about the baby. ***Julie and Lila were waiting outside when I came through the door.Julie didn't say anything when she saw my face. She just stepped forward and put her arms around me. I held her back and closed my eyes for a moment.Lila stood close with her hand on my shoulder when Julie finally stepped back. Her eyes were red at the edges. She had never met Viktor, but she had seen what he meant to me, and that was enough for her to grieve alongside me without needing any other reason.Leo was waiting near the car with Bri
•LEO•I was sitting on the couch in the living room when I heard her footsteps in the hallway.I had been awake for most of the night. After bringing Catherine back to Crescent Moon and making sure she was settled, I sat with Brian for a while until he fell asleep in the chair beside her bed. Then I had come out here and stayed, unable to rest, my mind turning over everything that had happened on that road. The Lycan King was dead. It was done. The war that had been building and bleeding into everything for so long was finally over. But the night had brought other news. News I had been sitting with for hours, trying to find the right way to carry it.When Catherine appeared in the doorway and the elders bowed their heads, I stayed where I was and watched her face. I saw the steadiness in it. The quiet strength of someone who had already decided who they were long before anyone else acknowledged it.When the elders finally straightened and began to speak quietly amongst themselves, C
•CATHERINE•The Lycan King didn't move.Neither did I. I held my ground, and looked at him, readying myself for what was to come next. He screamed as he came toward me with his fist in the air. The impact sent me sideways across the road. I hit the ground hard, rolled, and came back up before he could press forward. He was faster than his size suggested, closing the distance between us with a speed that left almost no room to breathe.I ducked under his second strike and drove into his side with everything I had. He barely moved. But he felt itGood. We collided again and again across that road, and every time I went down I came back up. I was a little smaller than him but I was faster, and Nyra moved through me with a clarity and fury that sharpened everything down to pure instinct. But he was wearing me down. I could feel it. Each impact cost more than the last, and my legs were beginning to feel the weight of it.Then Leo moved. He shifted and came in from the Lycan King's left
•BRIAN•I was heading out to the training grounds when I heard Luke talking with someone in the living room. My dad was gone, so when I peeked over, I saw him talking with Bruce. "It is confirmed," Luke said. "Both of them. Mary and Xander Whitlock. They're gone.""Are you sure about this?" Bruce asked. "The Alpha hasn't said anything about this before he left." "He's probably dealing with the news his own way and will inform the entire pack when he returns," Luke answered. "I am just happy that my son has been avenged and Rylan as well." "That's right," Bruce answered. "But who killed them?" "Alpha Whitlock handled it himself apparently," Luke replied. "He killed his own children and buried them by the side of the road where he took their lives."I leaned against the wall in the corridor and couldn't move or breathe. Mary was dead. The woman who had made my father's life miserable for years. The woman who had looked at me like I was an inconvenience every time I crossed her path
•CATHERINE• Leo stood in my doorway and didn't move for a long moment. I watched his face go through several things at once. Surprise first, then his eyes softened. He knew. "Come inside," I muttered. He stepped through the door and I closed it behind him. We sat across from each other in the sitting room. I had my hands folded in my lap. Neither of us spoke for a moment. "How far along?" he asked. "Not far," I answered. "But far enough to know for certain." He nodded. His jaw was tight but his eyes were soft in a way I didn't see from him often. "Leo," I said. "I need your help." "You have it," he replied immediately. "Whatever you need." "I need to end this war with the lycans," I replied. "I don't want to slow it down anymore." I held his gaze. "I have already lost too much. And I will not bring a child into a world where they are hunted before they are even born." Leo was quiet for a moment. "You want to go north." "The Lycan King operates out of the northern territo
•MARY•Later that evening, while I was pacing in my room, waiting for Sable's call, someone knocked on the door. I rushed to answer, thinking it was probably her, and she had finally come to sort out the problem that Xander and I had, but it was a scout. "Yes?" I said after opening the door, irri
•CATHERINE•When the car finally arrived outside the driveway of the Stormfield pack house, my heart raced. It had been eleven years since I had last been there. The place hadn't changed at all, and when I hopped out, I could almost feel the insults and all the looks they used to throw at me after
•MARY•I searched through Leo's office, trying to find something that might lead me to where Brian was. I couldn't think of anyone who might have taken him except Rylan. But he was dead now and useless to me. "How are we going to find Brian when we don't even know who took him?" Xander asked aft
•AISHA•I slipped out of bed while Kendrix was sleeping, took my cell phone, and headed out of the room. I closed the door as quietly as possible and went to the library. I tried so hard not to make any squeaking sounds on the wooden floor in case Kendrix and the kids woke up. After closing the d
