When I woke up in the morning, the other side of the bed was still empty.
Cold.A heavy feeling settled in my chest. Something was wrong. I could feel it.
I decided to check on Brian first.
*****
I found Brian in the living room, already awake and eating snacks.
“Hey, baby,” I greeted Brian with a quick kiss on the cheek. Usually, he’d light up the second he saw me, but today, nothing. He didn’t even flinch, just stared at the TV with a grin plastered on his face.
“Did you have breakfast?” I asked.
He nodded without looking at me, eyes glued to whatever was on the screen. It felt off because Brian always ran to me in the mornings, but maybe he was just upset because I’d slept late.
“Who made you breakfast? I thought you’d wait for Mommy.”
“Mary already made me breakfast,” he said. “I’m full.” He glanced at me once before turning back to the TV.
My heart dropped. The words shouldn’t have stung, any kind she-wolf could cook for the pack. But hearing her name in my son’s mouth sent a flicker of unease through me.
Before I could stop myself, I stood up and walked straight to the guest room—the room Leo gave Mary.
The door was slightly open. I pushed it and stepped inside.
She was scrolling on her cellphone, laughing about something when she lifted her eyes and looked at me.
“Oh, look who it is… our Luna. what are you doing here?” She asked, standing and folding her arms like she owned the place.
Nyra’s voice echoed in my mind, calm but firm. ‘Be careful with her, Cat. She’s not who you think she is. Don’t say or do anything that might get you in trouble, and get her the favor of the Alpha and pack members.’
“Mary,” I said calmly. “Thank you for helping Brian this morning.”
She looked up, smiling too easily. “Of course. He was hungry.”
“Next time, let me know first,” I said softly. “He’s sensitive about routines.”
Her smile didn’t reach her eyes. “Of course, Luna. But the boy was hungry because you overslept. And instead of owning that, you’re here throwing a tantrum because you’re failing as a mother?”
My blood boiled. “Brian is my son,” I said, trying to keep my voice even. “If you want to help him, talk to me first.”
Before she could answer, Leo’s voice came from behind me.
“What’s going on here?” Leo’s voice thundered behind me. He stormed into the room and immediately went to Mary’s side.
“She came in here and threatened me!” Mary cried, her voice trembling just enough to sound believable.
“That’s not true,” I said, forcing calm into my voice. “We were talking about Brian. I thanked her for feeding him. But—”
Leo’s glare landed on me, sharp as a blade. “Enough!” His voice cut through the air like a blade.““Mary is our new member—you need to be nicer to her."
My wolf pushed at the edge of my control, but I stood still. I whispered, my voice breaking. “You’d rather believe her lies than your own mate?”
“Leave us,” he ordered coldly. He wrapped his arm around Mary’s shoulder. She leaned into him, smirking when she thought I wasn’t looking.
“Thank you, Leo,” she murmured sweetly. “I was so scared.”
“You’re safe with me. No one will hurt you,” he answered, his voice softer now and protective. The same voice he used to use with me.
I walked out before the tears could fall, slamming the door behind me. My hands shook as I stepped onto the porch, trying to breathe, trying to stop my wolf from taking over.
“Did you see how quiet Luna was when the Alpha introduced his mistress?” I overheard a pair of she-wolves whispering nearby. “So sad. I thought he loved her.”
“She’s the silent Luna, all right. If my mate ever did that to me, I’d rip them apart and hang their bodies in the hall.”
“They’re not mates. Alpha has never acknowledged it.” another voice said.
“I forgot that,” came the reply, followed by laughter.
I clenched my fists and turned back into the house, slamming the door shut.
All these years, I had tried to be the perfect Luna, yet now they saw me as silent and powerless. However, the real me was nothing like that.
Leo was my mate and he has treated me well all these years. Maybe not that well, but at least he recognized me as the Luna and gave me the authority to manage the pack, didn’t he?
It’s just lately… maybe he’s been a little distracted. But I think we’ll work things out.
When I reached the hallway to our bedroom, I ran right into him. He looked at me with the same bitter expression and tried to walk past, but I grabbed his arm.
“Leo,” I said quietly. “You’ve changed recently, but I’d like to understand why. I don’t want a fight.”
He stared at me for a moment before he answered. “Do you want to know why things are like this between us?”
My chest tightened, and my stomach sank because I knew what he would say. I had thought I could make him love me after the six years we had been together.
I thought one day he’d look at me and love me. We were true mates, and we both felt it the day we first saw each other. But no matter how much I had tried, he seemed to struggle to move on from his dead fiancée.
I thought if I became more patient, loving, and tolerant, he would love me.
But what he said next completely shattered me.
“Mary is my ex, Catherine.” He paused for a moment and continued, "She is also the mother of Brian."
Everything inside me shattered.
•LEO•"The Luna demoted you?" I asked in disbelief while I was on the call with Bruce. I shook my head and couldn't believe what he was telling me. I had done everything before Catherine and I were taken to ensure that Mary would be punished for her crimes and banished from the pack. The only thing that remained was for her to sign the divorce papers and be done with the nonsense we called marriage for five years. I regretted every moment I had spent with her and wished she would be out of our territory by the time I returned home with my son. But alas, she had deceived the entire pack and made them believe she was still the Luna. The elders were even gullible enough to believe every word she said. It was as if they all believed I wouldn't return from the north. "Yes, Alpha," he answered. "The Elders sided with her and told us to await your return before she could be punished for the crimes she confessed in front of the entire pack. They believe she and Xander were under the inf
•VIKTOR•[126 YEARS AGO]I was heading to the woods to hunt when her scent hit me. She was crouching behind a tree, her eyes fixed on her target. I watched as she moved swiftly and caught the deer before it could run away. My heart felt warmed when I saw her. She was more like me than I wanted to admit. We both loved hunting alone. As I leaned closer to her, I felt a pull toward her. 'She's our mate,' Ash murmured in my head. She was beautiful and reserved. Her name was Cersie. Gamma Harlan’s daughter. Her dark hair was loose down her back, and her green eyes pierced through me when she tilted her head. She wore a plain dress, but she looked like something out of a dream. When our eyes met, the world narrowed to just us. She felt it too. Neither of us spoke at first. I stepped closer, and she didn’t back away. My hand lifted, fingers brushing her cheek, and she didn't back away. “You’re Viktor,” she murmured, smiling.“And you’re Cersie.”A few days after our first meeting in
•BRIAN•I waited outside the front porch for Alma. He was the only person who made it easy for me while waiting for my father to arrive. Alma was the only person who made waiting easy.He was my best friend, and the only one who didn't treat me like I was different. With him, I was just Brian. I heard soft footsteps behind the house, then a sharp whistle that I knew very well. I smiled before I even turned my head.“Brian,” Alma whispered loudly. “Come on. Before they see you.”I jumped up and followed his voice. He was standing near the side of the house, his dark hair messy as always, his eyes bright with excitement. He waved at me to hurry.“Where are we going?” I asked as I ran to him.“We will go to the playground,” he answered. “Then the trees. The older boys are training near the fence. If they see us, they will make us run errands.”I groaned. “Again?”He nodded seriously. “Again.”We both laughed quietly and ran behind the house. The backyard was wide and green, with tall
•CATHERINE•"Take her," Killian snarled as he commanded one of his men to grab Aisha. "Take her to the dungeons and lock her there.""Don't you dare touch me!" she shrieked, and when she tried to get away from them, they clasped a silver chain around her neck, and she was instantly weakened. I watched everything in horror as one of Killian's men kept me on the ground. "Ahh!" Aisha screamed, and I closed my eyes, trying to push away the need to shift. I knew if I tried to rebel, they would hurt me even more. "Take her away," Killian muttered, and the guard nodded before he took Aisha away.I wondered if what she did to me was worth it after what they had done to her now. Killian turned his back against her as well, which wasn't a surprise.Once Aisha's scream echoed in the distance, Killian leaned toward me and pressed his shoe on my hand, almost breaking my knuckles. I screamed in horror, trying to slip my hand from under his foot, but he pressed even harder. I was so confused ab
•CATHERINE•When the car finally arrived outside the driveway of the Stormfield pack house, my heart raced. It had been eleven years since I had last been there. The place hadn't changed at all, and when I hopped out, I could almost feel the insults and all the looks they used to throw at me after the pack run. They turned against me as if I were a disease and didn't even want to associate themselves with me. They all seemed relieved when I was arranged to Leo. The cursed girl who humiliated their future Alpha was being married away to Leo. How joyous it was for the entire pack. But here I was again, back to the same place that had broken me, trying to help the man who should have been a father to me. When I turned to the front porch, I saw Killian, the Beta, and Gamma standing beside him. They were expecting me. But instead of a warm welcome, Killian chuckled as he leaned closer. Two men approached and stood behind me. The hairs at the back of my neck stood on end, and Nyra gr
•MARY•Later that evening, while I was pacing in my room, waiting for Sable's call, someone knocked on the door. I rushed to answer, thinking it was probably her, and she had finally come to sort out the problem that Xander and I had, but it was a scout. "Yes?" I said after opening the door, irritated that he was disturbing me. Sable would probably call soon or come to see me, and I didn't want to risk missing a meeting with her. "The former Gamma, Bruce, is here to see you. He wants to talk to you," he responded. "He's waiting in the living room." "Did he tell you what he wants?" He shook his head, and I rolled my eyes. "Alright, I will be there now. Thank you."I swore under my breath when I went to my closet to change. Bruce was testing me, and if he came with his shenanigans, I swore I would kill him. I texted Sable again before heading to the closet. Xander and I needed her, and she was the only hope we had to get things back to normal. When I waited for a few minutes and
