He didn't come home that night. I waited for him. I never slept a night lonely when Kael was around. He was leaving me for that dramatic woman. I was lonely and alone. He never left me lonely. He had never. Tears spilled down my cheeks into my wet pillow. I caressed my stomach consolingly. If this was what was going to become the fate of our child, to be lonely and abandoned...

No one could even bother to check on the new Luna. The servants were more concerned about the arrival of a potential new Luna. They forgot about me. I could hear them shuffling their feet excitedly as they hurried in celebration, immersed in the joy of a new heir. It made me feel how lonely I was in the world. How lonely I came to be in this world. Without a father or mother. Or siblings. Not even a wicked relative to claim me as my own. No one to confide in who would actually listen to me. My eyelids felt heavy. I batted them down slowly, drifting off. To dream. I slept off.

The next morning, I woke up to a commotion in the house. What was happening? Why was someone moving this...? I stepped out and wore my nightrobe. I saw a servant shuffling about with my nursery items.

"Why are you redecorating? I never asked you to." I said.

She curtsied. "My Lady. It is the new Luna. She asked us to redecorate the nursery for her son."

What the fuck? I stepped down and saw Kael and Lyra. Giving orders to more servants.

"What is happening?" I said. "Why are you changing my nursery?"

They looked so perfect together. Another jab at my heart. Did he really love her? Because his actions were saying a lot differently than his words.

"Oh, I don't want the pink. I want blue," Lyra said.

Rude. Did she not see me standing in front of her? I walked to the nursery. Everything I had kept... They destroyed everything. This wasn't my nursery anymore. They disarranged everything. My baby's nursery.

"Aurelia, are you alright?"

"You're asking me if... If I'm alright?"

"I'm sorry. I should have sent word that you could come. There is a problem with my child. Lyra needs to be around me for the baby's stability. I had to stay with her all night."

What was he... Can't he see she was pretending she was fine? Obviously fine. I know fine when I see one. I was a healer.

"Kael, that won't work. She and I can't stay in the same walls. I don't care what nonsense you have planned. Tell her no."

"Let's be rational."

"Be rational? You wouldn't even take half of this if it were me who did this to you."

"Aurelia, keep your voice low. The staff can hear you."

"So now you don't want them to know? You humiliated me yesterday."

I saw Lyra step up to us. "I want to speak to Kael."

This little—

"We are discussing. Come later. Where are your manners?"

"I want to speak with Kael," she persisted. "Alone." She looked directly at me. "Not you. You're not needed."

"Lyra, whatever you want to say, say it here," Kael responded.

"Oh, well..." She looked around the nursery. "I was thinking we should change the color. Pink is not befitting for a future Alpha. It's too weak. Feminine. Unfit. Not the best for our child. If we want him to be powerful, I don't want anything hindering our baby's growth. Our son will be powerful. The maester says it's a boy. There is no need to make such a fuss about it. It reminds me of fighting with Kael on the battlefield, bleeding from rogue wolves. Yet none of it, none of it, made me cry or lose my composure. I can't imagine why a Luna like you, without a wolf, is upset. You should throw a tantrum over such a trivial matter."

Every word she said, she was trying to say I was unfit. She was undermining me. I was a wolf-less Omega. But what I've gone through is better than any war this fake bitch has fought. I have endured the pack's disdain. But I won't let her put it to my face and rub it on me.

"You're so strong and devoted to my pack, yet you had to sleep your way through my husband's bed just to prove to everyone how much of a slut you are."

"Don't be naive," Lyra said. "Kael and I are comrades-in-arms. The pregnancy was an accident. If you're not threatened, then why are you behaving this way?"

"Words from a slut," I retaliated.

"Enough," Kael rasped. "Lyra, I won't have you talking to the Luna like this. Apologize to her this instant." His voice hardened. "You'll respect her if you'll live in this house."

Lyra looked at me. She was obviously not expecting things to turn out this way. She shuffled her feet. Then she stomped off.

Did she just leave without— In my presence?

"Kael, did you see that—"

"I want you to stop being so dramatic."

"Kael, what the hell? She just disrespected me and you. Why are you— I'm the dramatic one?"

"It's just a room." He touched my stomach. "When we eventually get pregnant, we can have another child."

Another child. As though the child already growing inside me didn't exist.

"It's more important that Lyra gives birth safely. If she does, she'll move out soon enough."

I stared at him. Then I stepped out of his view. He never understood me. How could he be so inconsiderate? I looked down. My baby's feeding bottle was on the floor. It was broken. Someone had stepped on it. I bought it for my child. They didn't even regard me. It was like I was almost discarded. They didn't regard me. I picked the broken pieces from the floor. A sharp bit dug deep into my skin and cut me. I bit my lips in anger. I tasted blood. I carefully carried the broken shards to my room.

“Miss Moretti… Miss Moretti!”My assistant’s voice dragged me out of my thoughts.I blinked, lifting my eyes from the documents on my desk. I’d been staring at the same page without absorbing a single word for the past 15 minutes. My mind was elsewhere. With Nova.It always came back to her.“Ma’am, this is the fourth proposal we’ve received from the Blood Moon Pack this month.” My assistant placed another file on my desk. “They’re requesting a partnership with TradeX.”The Blood Moon Pack. How many times had I told her not to bring those words into my office? Those savages were nothing but users. They took whatever they wanted, destroyed whatever they couldn’t control, and expected the world to bow at their feet. And Kael Stormborn was the worst of them all.“No.” I pushed the file back toward her. “I’ve told you to reject every proposal from that pack. Why is this one even on my desk?”“Ma’am, if you would just look at the numbers, their offer is considerably better than our last—

Torin's knock came again. "Alpha, the Beta is waiting." I glanced toward Aurelia's room. She was still locked inside. I hated leaving her like that, but the Beta's arrival could not be ignored."I'll be there." I turned to leave. Before I could take another step, Torin spoke again."The Beta said it concerns Lyra."My jaw tightened. Of course it did.I followed him to the council room. The Beta was already waiting. He stood as I entered and bowed."Alpha."I nodded. "You wanted to speak with me.""Yes." He gestured toward the chair opposite him. I sat. He remained standing."My daughter is carrying your child.""I know.""She is also from the Beta bloodline."I said nothing. The Beta smiled."That makes her a suitable match for you."My eyes hardened. "I did not ask for a match.""I know. But the pack needs to think about its future." He began pacing. "A strong Alpha needs a strong heir. Lyra is a warrior. She has fought beside you for years. Her bloodline is respected, and her family

"Wolf-less Luna." The words spat in my face. "What?" I looked around. I was surrounded by them."She's barren." "She's a witch." "She's useless." I backed away slowly until my back hit the wall. I wanted to run, but there was nowhere to go. Everywhere I turned, they were there. Their faces twisted with disgust as they slowly approached me."She's useless." "She has no wolf." "She can't even give the Alpha an heir." "No wonder he doesn't want her." "No wonder he chose Lyra.""No…" I crouched against the wall, shielding my face with my hands. "Stay away from me, please." Their voices grew louder. Their footsteps grew closer. Then, among all those hateful faces, one looked familiar. My heart stopped. Was that… Kael?"Kael?" I lifted my head. "KAEL!"He was standing there. But he wasn't alone. Lyra stood beside him. His arm was around her. She smiled at me. A cruel, knowing smile."KAEL, TAKE ME OUT OF HERE!" I reached for him. "Please!" My fingers stretched toward him. He looked at my ha

I slammed the door.Shortly after, Kael walked in. This had been our ritual for years. He'd let anyone humiliate me in public, and he'd apologize to me in private."Aurelia, what was that out there?""What was that? She humiliated me.""I expected you to be more mature. It's Lyra. Obviously, she'll feel threatened. That's the only reason why she said those things to you.""I should be the bigger person to your mistress?" I stared at him. "I'm starting to think that you did it on purpose."He sighed heavily, tired, as if exhausted. "I come back home after risking my life fighting rogue wolves. I almost died, and my welcome back is…" He looked at me. "You won't even look me in the eyes, Aurelia. You've been acting like a child since you got here."Oh no. He did. He said that. He wasn't going to play that card on me."And I stay here all day, faithful to you, and I wake up and my husband comes home with a mistress." I laughed bitterly. "How does that sound, hmm? You swore an oath to the

Eggs, I needed more eggs. If I was going to make it just the way he loved it, I needed everything to be perfect. I received word from Torin yesterday. My husband was coming home. I had to ask Torin again if he was sure Kael would be back from the war. I had good news to share with him. I couldn't control my excitement.I placed the fish-filled dough in my egg mixture, letting it dip so well into the yolk-rich solution. Afterwards, I'd fry them golden brown. Fish fingers, just the way he loved them. I had my green dress picked out already. Emerald, the same color as the trees. Kael had mentioned he loved it. They reminded him of home. I made sure to wear it on special occasions. Today was a special occasion.I wasn't going to tell him yet. I wrapped the package neatly in the box and sealed it with the emerald green bow. I had imagined in my head so many ways to tell him. If I would give him the box and just hand it over sheepishly. Or if I would open it. Or if I could contain my excite
