Elara's POV

The contract arrived on a Monday by Damian himself, which I had not expected. He walked into the new office at eleven in the morning without an appointment, which made Petra look up from her desk with the expression she reserved for things that required immediate recalibration.

"He's fine," I called through the open door.

He came in. Set a folder on my desk. Sat down without being asked.

"The commercial partnership," he said. "Signed by me, signed by the council, full terms as agree

Lena's POVThe office smelled like coffee and paper and something that took me three days to identify as the specific quality of a workplace where people actually wanted to be there.I had worked in two places before this. A kitchen in the omega block, which smelled of institutional cleaning products and resentment in equal measure. And a summer stint in a human café when I was seventeen, which smelled of burnt milk and other people's conversations and had been fine but not interesting. This was interesting.Petra gave me the desk by the window on my first day without making a point of it, which meant she had thought about it beforehand. She showed me the filing system — physical and digital, cross-referenced in a way that was meticulous enough to indicate someone with a very specific type of mind had designed it — and then she said: "Elara will explain the compliance division when she gets in at nine. Until then, read the standing contracts in the third folder."She pointed at a fold

Damian's POVI had researched the restaurant for four days. This was not something I was going to tell anyone. But the children's menu question was more complicated than it sounded — Renn ate with the specific opinions of someone who had not yet developed the social grace of pretending to like things he didn't, and the last thing I wanted was to have chosen somewhere with nothing he'd touch and spend the evening managing the consequences. So I had looked at eight restaurants. Read the menus. Asked Bret, who had looked at me for a moment before answering with the specific diplomatic neutrality of a man choosing not to comment on what he was being asked. The third one had a children's menu that was actually designed for children rather than being a regular menu with the prices lowered, which was apparently a meaningful distinction. She texted at six-fifteen: Renn has thoughts about his shoes. We're leaving in ten minutes.I waited outside. They came around the corner together — Elara wi

Elara's POVMara Fenn arrived on a Tuesday with a cardboard box and no warning."I've been meaning to bring this," she said. "I kept finding reasons not to."I stepped back. She came in and put the box on the kitchen table. Renn looked at it from the floor. Looked at Mara Fenn. She sat in the chair she had claimed as hers over months of kitchen sessions and he returned to whatever he had been doing, which was trying to fit a spoon into a cup it was too large for."Tea?" I said."Please."I made it. Set it in front of her. Sat down. She looked at the box."Forty years," she said. "Some of it is mine — the research, the training records, the Ashford lineage documentation I compiled from what Corrin gave me and what I found afterward." She paused. "Some of it is older.""How old?""The oldest piece is from the founding period." She put her hand on the box. Not opening it — just resting her hand on it the way you'd put your hand on something before you handed it over. "Letters between the

"Bret made him redraft it twice."I looked at the folder. Didn't pick it up yet."Why did you bring it yourself?" I said."Because it's the Wolfe Pack formally entering a commercial agreement with Elara Ashford." He looked at me steadily. "I thought that deserved more than a courier."I looked at the folder.Eighteen months ago I had been sitting on the steps of the bakery downstairs counting coins, working out whether forty-seven dollars would last the week, wa

Damian's POVSomething was different.I noticed it when she opened the door. Not what she said — she said the same things she always said, let me in, offered tea or coffee, told me Renn had spent the afternoon trying to convince the kitchen chair to move on its own and had not yet accepted that it wouldn't. All the usual. But something in the way she looked at me before she stepped back — a beat too long, something running under the surface of it that hadn't been there the week before.I didn't ask. I went in.Renn was already asleep. Late Thursday start — the assembly ran long, I'd texted to say so, she'd sent back *fine, door's open* and I'd let myself in with the key she'd given me two weeks ago, which we had also not discussed. She made tea. I sat at the table. Normal.Except it wasn't quite."How was the assembly?" she said."Dray is still filing procedural objections. Bret handles them before they reach me now." I looked at the table. "Three founding family statements this week

Elara's POVShe came on a Wednesday, which she hadn't said she would.I had expected a letter first. An arrangement. Some version of the cautious approach Caden had described — a young woman who had learned to move carefully in a world that had given her no reason to move any other way.Instead she knocked.I opened the door and she was standing there with a backpack over one shoulder and a journal under her arm and the expression of someone who had made a decision and gotten there before they could unmake it. Nineteen years old. Thin in the way people were thin when they had been feeding themselves on whatever was available rather than whatever they wanted. Her eyes moved past me into the flat in one quick sweep — exit points, occupants, unfamiliar variables — and then back to me."You're shorter than I thought," she said."Come in," I said. She came in. Looked at Renn on the floor. Renn looked back at her with his standard assessment gaze."He's staring at me," she said."He does th
