Chapter 7

Author: Meow Oh Meow
Lindsey found herself lying on a bed in the villa when she woke up once more.

A shrill scream came from the living room. She struggled to get out of bed and opened a crack in the door. She saw Jacob sitting expressionlessly on the couch with the group of beggars kneeling before him.

There were wounds all over their body, and they were trembling in fear. They mumbled their pleas through bloodied mouths, "Please let us go!"

However, Jacob gave his verdict like a decisive judge. He ordered his bodyguards to break their arms and had their tongues cut out to keep them silent.

"She's not someone you're allowed to touch!" he declared.

Then, Jacob gave his bodyguards a signal before they dragged the beggars out.

This scene felt surreal to Lindsey, as if everything that had recently happened was nothing but a nightmare. But the searing pain nearly made her lose her balance. The injuries on her back had reopened, and she couldn't help but inhale sharply from the pain.

Jacob heard the sound and came into her room. His expression was unexpectedly gentle, but his words were still heartless and cruel.

"Stephie accidentally leaked those videos to the public. I've already had them deleted. Since you hadn't suffered any harm, just let it go and don't find fault with her."

He threw a waiver letter at Lindsey and ordered, "Sign this letter of waiver immediately and swear that you'll never use this matter against Stephie. I'll write off the 2.08 million you owe, and I'll also have the doctors give your mother the best care possible."

As if worried that she might misunderstand, Jacob added, "Don't overthink it. The one I love will always be Stephie. But owing to the fact that we were together for five years, you won't have to worry about food or clothing all your life."

Jacob exuded a sense of superiority while he said all this. He looked just like that day at the bar when she asked Richard for money.

Did he think of her as a beggar on the street? Someone who should be eternally grateful for any crumbs he threw her way?

Maybe she used to be like that back then. She could endure anything for her mother. But now, she had no weaknesses left.

Seeing that Lindsey wasn't responding, Jacob left the waiver letter behind before getting up to leave. "Send it to my office after you sign it."

Lindsey's heart was completely numb as she tore the letter to shreds with a mocking smile. After that, she called the police without hesitation and made a report against Stephanie's crimes.

At the stroke of midnight, Lindsey glanced at a calendar hanging on the wall and a grandfather clock in the corner. In ten more hours, she would be gone from this place forever.

Lindsey packed her luggage and took a hot shower. Before she left, she made one last stop at the cemetery. She buried the urn deep into the soil, paid her respects, and kneeled before Jenny's tombstone.

The emotions she had kept suppressed for so long flooded into her body, and her voice choked up with sobs. "Mom, I'm going to chase my real freedom now. I'm sure you'll be happy for me too if you can see me now, right?"

A firefly landed on her fingertip and fluttered its wings gently. The faint glow from its body lit up the photo on Jenny's tombstone. Her smile was as elegant and poised as ever, her eyes overflowing with warmth and gentleness.

Stephanie lay down by the grave and quietly gazed at her mother's face. It felt like the old times when Jenny used to comfort her softly. "Lindy, you're all grown up now. Why are you still crying like a child?"

Lindsey slept peacefully that night.

By the time she woke, sunlight had streamed into the room and spilled across the floor. Her future had finally arrived.

At that moment, her phone buzzed briefly. She received a wedding invitation from Stephanie and a text from the police station. "Ms. Johnson, your case has been accepted and is now under formal investigation."

A rare smile appeared on Lindsey's face. She deleted the digital wedding invitation quietly and blocked all channels of communication from Stephanie and Jacob.

Half an hour later, Lindsey boarded her flight. Her tensed nerves finally began to unwind once the plane soared above the clouds.

"I hope I never see you again, Jacob," she muttered. "From now on, I'm free to soar across the vast skies."

Lindsey remembered Edison's kindness to her back then, so she went to the hospital. Jacob was just skin and bones as he lay in the hospital bed. He seemed to have lost his will to live. Lindsey found it hard to associate him with the man she remembered. Edison's eyes were weary and sad. "He's been diagnosed with kidney failure. The doctors say he won't live past this month."She lowered her eyes and said nothing. On the way here, she had already heard his results from Zachary's investigation. Jacob's personality changed drastically after Lindsey left him. Day and night, he deliberately damaged his own health and body. He drank so much that his stomach bled, and the first thing he did after being brought back from the brink of death was to continue drinking. Was it any wonder that his body finally collapsed?Jacob stared blankly out the window, his lips pressed into a firm line. He stayed silent for a long time. The first person he thought of was Lindsey when he was diag

There was no trace of love left in Lindsey's gaze as she looked into his eyes. She lifted her clasped hand, still entwined with Zachary's, and admitted calmly, "As you can see, he's my fiance."Instinctively, Zachary shielded her behind him and stared at Jacob coldly. Suddenly, Jacob broke down and roared in anger, "This is impossible! The one you love is clearly me! How could you suddenly fall in love with him?"Lindsey couldn't be bothered to argue with him any longer, so she pulled Zachary's hand and headed toward their car parked nearby."Lindy!" Jacob blocked her path. He dropped to his knees with a loud thud and pleaded humbly, "Lindy, I used to think the one I loved was Stephanie, but now I finally realize the person I truly love is you. Can you please give me another chance? I really know that I was wrong. Please forgive me, okay?"As Jacob spoke, he tried to grab Lindsey's wrist. However, Zachary kicked him hard, sending him sprawling on the ground. Zachary still h

Jacob found himself lying in an unfamiliar room when he woke up again. Stephanie lay on the bed beside him, her bare shoulders exposed. The fury of being set up made him lose his rationality in an instant. He kicked the sleeping Stephanie off the bed. "Ouch!"Jacob clamped his hand tightly around her throat before she could even cry out. Her face turned purple from lack of air.Jacob's voice was cold and sounded as if coming from afar. "Who gave you permission to climb into my bed? Are you seeking death?"A second later, he flung Stephanie into a corner of the room roughly. She hit her abdomen on the floor, the sharp pain leaving her speechless. Jacob took out his phone and made a short call. Soon, a group of bodyguards burst into the room and forced Stephanie to swallow a contraceptive pill. "Take her to the hospital for a check-up. Make her get an abortion if she's pregnant," he ordered.Hearing this, Stephanie's eyes went wide with disbelief. Her whole body trembled viol

Jacob never expected the next time he saw Lindsey would be in the newspapers. In the photo, Lindsey stood at the podium of a press conference at the National Institute of Research. She looked completely different from her disheveled figure in the past. Instead, she radiated confidence and vitality. The charm she exuded seemed to leap out from the page despite the still image. This was actually the real Lindsey. Jacob clutched the newspaper in excitement. He was about to rush out to find her, but the bodyguards at the door stopped him.He asked in confusion, "Grandpa, please let me out. I need to find Lindy. Didn't you like her the most? I'll go to her right now and apologize, beg for her forgiveness, and ask her to marry me."Edison looked at his grandson's haggard face and bloodshot eyes. He let out a long sigh and said, "You once blamed me for forcing you to break up with Stephanie and marry Lindsey, whom you didn't love. "Now, everything is on track with what you've hope

Compared to Lindsey's happiness, the Whitaker family had already fallen into complete chaos. After kicking Stephanie out of the villa, Jacob cancelled all her credit cards and announced publicly that he had cut all ties with her. Stephanie was met with rejection wherever she went without the Whitakers' support and protection. She couldn't accept the fact that she was being sent abroad by Jacob, so she lay in wait outside the villa's gates every day for Jacob. The moment he stepped outside, she would cling to him like a venomous snake.Throwing away all her pride, Stephanie kneeled before him and begged him to spare her another glance. "Jacob, please don't treat me like this. I'm aware of my mistakes. Just forgive me one more time, alright? I'm begging you. I know you're angry right now, but I can change. "I can become the gentle and kind Stephanie you remembered. I can change anytime you want. Jake… I can even go to Lindsey and apologize to her if you want me to. I can beg for

The diary entries came to an abrupt end on the day they parted ways. Lindsey could still see the faint tear stains on the pages. She felt a sharp pang in her heart and murmured, "I'm sorry.""What are you apologizing for?"Zachary entered his room with a smile. He took a hair dryer from the drawer and began drying her hair. The air became thick with tension when his fingertips brushed against her scalp. For once, he spoke in a solemn tone, "I'm sorry, Lindy. I didn't know that your mother fell ill back then. Not only did I fail to share your burden, but I also went abroad out of spite. I'm sorry for making you go through so much on your own."Zachary had fled overseas because he couldn't accept the harsh words Lindsey said to him back then. For a long time, he didn't dare to ask about anything related to her. He even avoided attending class reunions. Year after year, he buried himself with work to numb his yearning, but he still couldn't stop thinking of her. His longing for
