Chapter 1

Author: County Court
I said nothing for a long time. Only after a long silence did I manage to speak.

“In five days, I’ll return to Harbor City to marry you.”

My childhood friend, Olivia Sullivan, raised her tone in a way that made her smugness on the other end of the line easy to imagine. “It’s a deal.”

After hanging up, my gaze lingered on Autumn Hill’s wedding gown video. The two people in the frame were kissing passionately. It was almost as if the man she had gotten engaged to yesterday was the one in the video, not me.

Right at that moment, Autumn called. When I answered, her voice sounded uneven and breathy. Mixed with her voice was the heavy panting of a man.

“The wedding… dress video… turned out great. This time… you don’t need to bother covering it up for me.”

With that, the call was abruptly cut off.

My hand dropped listlessly to my side. We had been in love for five years, yet in the end, the only person trapped by it was myself.

Autumn and I first met at a university charity fair. I was selling my paintings, and she mistakenly thought I was an impoverished student and wanted to sponsor me.

When I turned down her financial support, she tilted her head with a smile and said, “Then I’ll buy all your paintings.”

Afterward, Autumn often came on campus to look for me just to buy my artwork. I really was strapped for cash back then. Having run away after a falling out with my family, I was completely penniless.

To protect my pride, Autumn quietly tripled my hourly wage at the place where I worked part-time. She also slipped a brand-new cafeteria card under my desk.

I never found out exactly how much money she loaded onto that card. All I knew was that whenever I ate, I no longer had to worry about whether meat dishes would cost a few extra bucks.

When a gang of thugs cornered me, she showed up with her private security.

Shielding me behind her, she said, “He’s under my protection. Try taking another step forward.”

Realizing they had crossed someone they couldn’t afford to mess with, the thugs fled in panic.

Autumn bent down, and using her handkerchief, she tenderly brushed my injuries and asked, “Does it hurt?”

I stared at her blankly, completely entranced. “Why are you so nice to me? Autumn, what do you want from me?”

Her eyes were glistening as she smiled. “I want you, Mark.”

My ears flushed instantly. Long before my heart admitted it, my body had already betrayed my secret affection for her.

After that day, we became a couple. As soon as we graduated from college, Autumn brought me into her company as an intern. She taught me the ropes on how to manage the business and entrusted me with important work.

Even when I ran a high fever and was delirious from exhaustion, Autumn stayed by my side all night, swapping cold towels to bring my temperature down. When I opened my eyes in a daze, I saw her eyes filled with tears because she was worried for me. Back then, I truly thought I had found true love.

The reason I had run away from home in the first place was that I refused an arranged marriage. Even though I was an only child, my father cared far more about my commercial value. He flew into a rage and told me I was kicked out of the family if I didn’t marry Olivia.

Caught between my father and me, Olivia proposed a bet to ease our father-son tension. “Mark, I’ll give you five years. If you can find true love within the next five years, our engagement will be canceled. Otherwise, you’ll come back and be with me.”

When I left, I was confident that even without my status as the heir of Harbor City’s wealthiest family, I could still find true love, and I thought I had found it.

As I smoothed the stray strands of hair by Autumn’s ear, I made a silent vow that I would marry her and bring her back to Harbor City. I wanted my father to acknowledge her existence and give her the grandest, most glorious wedding in the world.

To make that day come sooner, I poured all my energy into expanding and strengthening her company, all so my father would place fewer obstacles in her way. However, I never thought that Autumn would cheat on me.

Three years later, I happened to hear news about Autumn again purely by chance. It was on television, and it was because of Seth.According to the onlookers, Seth had contracted syphilis and had long since ceased working in the entertainment industry. He only became famous again because he abused his wife on the street. He punched and kicked her. He even grabbed her hair and slammed her head against the concrete pavement. His wife was beaten until she was covered in blood, leading many people on the scene to call the police immediately.A toddler, around three years old, came running over while crying and shouting, “Daddy, stop!”Seth pulled his belt straight off and lashed it viciously at his wife on the ground. As he whipped her, he cursed, “The paternity test says this little bastard isn’t mine! How dare you mess around behind my back? You got me infected with this dirty disease too! I’m going to beat you to death today!”He went mad. Any onlookers who stepped in and stopped h

I raised an eyebrow. My ex-lover? She sure had the nerve to come looking for me. My expression turned grim as I flatly refused, “I won’t see her.”Beside me, Olivia overheard the conversation and frowned as she said, “Is that your true love here for you? When she dumped you back then, she told you never to go back. Well, she sure can’t keep her word.”The butler looked deeply embarrassed. “Ms. Sullivan, that woman says if Mr. Dunn refuses to see her, she’ll stay waiting outside.”Olivia gasped in shock. “What? How could she?”Then, she turned to me and smirked. “Oh well, I suppose your taste in women was always mediocre. I’ll leave you to clean up this mess. I trust you can handle it.”With that, Olivia decided she wouldn’t interfere in my affairs anymore and walked away. After a moment’s hesitation, I decided to set the record straight with Autumn. Then, we’d go our separate ways. When Autumn was led inside, her face no longer had the same glow it once did. Her cheeks were

After returning home, the very first thing I did was put my strategic marriage with the Sullivan family on the agenda. My father handed me a signet ring, a symbol of inheriting the family business, and praised me. “After going out and gaining some real-world experience, you’ve returned a lot more mature.”I took the ring and smiled. “After falling down a couple of times, one naturally learns how to walk.”My father turned his back to me and waved his hand. “By marrying Olivia, you’ve at least lived up to what your mother asked of me. I heard you did quite well running a company called Sky Group. Why don’t I acquire it as a stepping stone in your career?”My expression froze for a moment, but I quickly relaxed. A gentle smile played at the corner of my mouth. “That works too. Consider it part of the wedding gift for Olivia.”Olivia and I got engaged that afternoon. Just for the engagement party alone, the Dunn and Sullivan families spent a staggering two million dollars. Everyone

Seth was so flustered that he could barely form a coherent sentence. “A-Autumn, the shareholders on the board… they’ve all pulled their funding!”Autumn’s mind went blank. Her company was currently in its growth phase, with incredibly bright prospects. Why on earth would the shareholders suddenly pull out?Seth’s face was filled with dread. “The Sullivan Group bought up all the board’s shares! On top of that, they leaked news that we’ve been committing tax evasion!”At first, Autumn was shocked. Then, as if all her strength had been drained, she collapsed onto the floor.“It’s him… It must be Mark…”Seth was bewildered. “Who are you talking about? Mark, that freeloading gold-digger? Is this a joke? What kind of big shot does Mark think he is? How could he possibly have the means to pull something like this off?”Exhausted, Autumn handed her phone over to Seth, who glanced at the top trending headline on social media, and his eyes widened in shock. “How could Mark be the heir to

And holding my arm was the elegant lady, clearly the same woman who had visited the film set yesterday. The heir of Harbor City’s wealthiest family? The heiress of the Sullivan family? This was impossible. Autumn believed she must have misread the article. She couldn’t bring herself to believe what she was seeing.Never could she have imagined that the struggling young artist who once made a living selling paintings was actually the distinguished and immensely powerful heir standing right there.Just what on earth was going on?With her hands shaking, she pulled out her phone and dialed the familiar number, only to hear an automated message informing her that the number was no longer in service. This sudden disconnection made Autumn’s heart skip a beat. She had a faint, unsettling feeling that something was quietly slipping out of her control, and countless memories flashed through her mind.In the past, whenever the company faced a major crisis, I would always step in to solve

Autumn didn’t accept it right away. Instead, she looked at me with disbelief. Then, she sneered. “Mark, don’t you regret this. Next time you want to marry me, it won’t be as simple as just getting down on your knees.”Seth, standing beside her, strode forward and snatched the ring from me.“So now you’re playing hard to get? Autumn has shown me the security footage of you begging her to marry you. A spineless coward like you trying to make yourself seem tough, huh? Too bad you’re worth nothing without Autumn!”Security footage? My heart skipped a beat. As it turned out, the love I once gave without reservation had become nothing more than a joke to her.Autumn stepped forward and sneered. “Canceling the engagement is fine, but don’t even think about taking anything with you. I’m officially announcing that you’re fired from Sky Group. Also, I’ll tell you one more thing…”Autumn leaned in and whispered something softly in my ear. When I heard that, I looked up at her suddenly, my
