Wet warmth slid down the side of my face, and I knew that smell—blood.
I was still in my apartment, but I had been bound to a chair.
I wasn’t alone.
About six men in black suits crowded the room, along with a woman who looked to be in her mid forties. The first thought that crossed my mind was—how the hell did they all fit into this tiny apartment?
“Sorry for the manhandling. We just wanted this as quiet as possible,” the woman said, her tone too sweet to be sincere. “How are you feeling?”
My eyes flicked to the men; they were huge. While they were all similarly dressed, two stood out from the rest.
Had Wraith sent these people after me?
I should’ve known. He was never planning to let me go that so easily. The woman frowned when I didn’t answer her question, but her concern was obviously fake.
“I am Diana Callister. Wife to Falcone Callister and I’m here to ask you a few questions.”
Wraith didn’t send them. They were here to claim what they believed I had stolen from them. I had no doubt that these men were armed with guns.
“I don’t want it.” I said quickly. “I don’t know why my name was there, but I want no part of this; I just want to be left alone. Please.”
“And you expect me to believe that? to believe that my own husband wrote off seventy-five percent of all he has to a complete stranger?”
“I don’t know…”
“Don’t you dare lie to me, girl,” she spat, drawing a knife. “Your friend stopped by. What was her name again—the one with the black hair... Bree? She was so anxious to see you, she believed you were in trouble. She’s one stubborn girl, that one.”
“If you did anything to her…”
“Hush. She’s fine. I sent her on her way. But one call is all I’ll need to make, and she won’t be so fine anymore. So, answer me this: Who are you?”
When I’d been abandoned at the altar, I thought life couldn’t get any worse. When I found out my mother had stolen my college savings, I was in despair—but if I thought things couldn’t get worse, this proved me wrong.
Now, I just wanted my life back.
“Are you my husband’s little whore? Is that why he did this to our family?” she pushed.
One of the men stepped forward, and I flinched when he grabbed my jaw. “She looks fine, but I don’t think there’s any pussy so good that Dad would leave his fortune to her for that.”
“You’re right,” the second man added. “If he left her his inheritance, there must’ve been a damn good reason.”
Now I could see why they stood out from the others. It wasn’t just because they looked more refined and expensive compared to the rest, but because they seemed to command authority.
They were Callister’s sons, and Diana was their mother.
If Falcone had a wife and also children, why hadn’t he left his estate to them? That seemed like the most reasonable thing to do.
“I am not his whore,” I finally found my voice to say.
“Then what are you to him?” Diana asked. “How important could you be that he’d risk his own mother, wife, siblings, and children going into poverty just so you could have it all? Tell me!”
“I don’t know, please… I don’t want any part of this.”
She scoffed. “I think she’s lying. What do you think, George?”
George was the one who had grabbed my jaw.
“I think she blackmailed him. She must have held something over him and used it against him...”
“You’re wrong!” I cried out.
“Look around you,” Diana said, a sick smile spreading across her lips. “These are dangerous men. They’d make the next hours of your life a living hell if you don’t tell me what the hell...”
A gunshot rang outside my apartment, followed by the door bursting open.
More gunshots followed, so loud it felt like I’d lost my hearing.
It was chaos.
Shouts and screams erupted from the neighbors.
The bindings holding me to the chair were ripped off.
Someone grabbed me, I couldn’t tell who it was, but before I could react, I was swiftly carried out of the building. It was Wraith.
He came back for me.
Without a word, he shoved me behind him and took down a man who was about to fire at us.
“Get in the car!” he ordered. This time, I didn’t hesitate for a second.
A driver was already in place, ready to drive off. The moment Wraith got in, the car sped away.
ALPHA REX’S POVThere was a knock at the door. I’d been expecting Wraith’s visit for the past few hours, so I was quick to pull it open. But instead of him, I was met with a scantily dressed woman—one of my favorite playthings.Anyone with a brain would know this wasn’t the right time, but of course, beauty doesn’t always come with brains.“Get lost.”“But—”“I never thought I’d live to see a day like this,” came Wraith’s voice. The woman, finally giving up, turned and walked away. Only after she was gone did Wraith finish his sentence. “The day you turn down sex.”“Well, she wasn’t exactly the visitor I was expecting.”I let him in.Only a few hours had passed since he regained consciousness. The pack members had seen him in the dining room with the human, Tessa.Part of me resented not being the first person he came to, but this man had spent the last week in the infirmary after saving my life; so I forced the thought down.I checked him over for any signs of pain or discomfort, b
TESSA’S POVI’d only left Wraith’s side to freshen up, returning as soon as I could. Now, I sat beside him, watching him—studying every feature. I reached out to brush his hair away from his eyes. My chest tightened as I stared at him, at the tattoo he had told me meant a ‘promise.’ At those soft red lips.I couldn’t wait to see him open those eyes. But then, the thought resurfaced. The truth about who my father was.I had Falcone’s blood flowing through my veins, and no matter how much I tried to deny it, it was the only truth that made sense.A valid explanation to why a common human like me ended up as a mate to a man as powerful as Wraith.I would have to tell him.I planned to tell him the moment he awoke, even if it wasn’t exactly the best timing. Because deep down, I knew if I didn’t speak then, I might never have the courage to speak at all. Each day, I prepared myself for the inevitable. I even had a paragraph prepared and memorized on how I’d begin when the time came.Wraith
I punched him hard, in the nose. He staggered backwards, hands over his bleeding nose, but his smile remained.“Look again.” I growled. “Do you remember this woman?”Now he was furious. He reached down, and for a second, I thought he was going for his weapon—But he snatched the picture from my hand instead. The only picture I had of my mother, he turned it over and tore out a portion with his teeth, spitting it at me.“How could I forget her? Those beautiful, enchanting green eyes are just simply unique.” He said with a smirk stretching on his lips. “Your father with the leg issue. He tried so fucking hard to protect his mate, but he was no match for me, not even when he had his two legs.Your mother cried only for a little while, but then… she stopped. She accepted her fate. He didn’t; he tried over and over to save her and failed. He died with the memory of his mate being hung to death right in front of his very eyes.”I let out a roar of pure fury as I lunged at him, bringing him
Six months ago.I sat at a bar. My only companion—a bottle of whiskey, which was almost empty. If my mother were alive, today would have been her birthday. For me, it was another day to remember that the man who had killed her was still alive and out there, another day to remember that she was yet to be avenged.I took out her picture, the only one I had left of her.A few years ago, I had returned back to the house I’d lived in, the very place my parents had both been killed, and I’d been able to recover a single picture of her. Worn out as it had been, this was all that was left of my past.Today, I had it with me. My mother stared at me from the picture, a loving smile on her face.Even after all those years, it still felt like it all happened yesterday. I still blamed myself for not being there when they needed me the most.‘Patience,’ Rex had said, "You’ll have your revenge when the time is right."It’s been seventeen years and six months since my parents’ death and nine years si
WRAITH’S POV“Can you hear me?” Her voice broke through the silence. Soft and soothing, I never really realized how beautiful her voice was till now when I had nothing else to focus on but just that—her voice.“You’ll be fine, Wraith. Soon, it will be over,” she assures, then everything went silent, and I feared I’d lost her voice once again. “I love you.” She finally said.I wanted to respond—I wanted to say something back to her—but no words came out, no matter how hard I tried.I never did say those words back. I never told her I loved her.Her voice faded away, and I’m drawn into another dream—no, a memory.-Eighteen years ago.I’d been told many times that I was the spitting image of my mother, but I never saw the resemblance. She had green eyes and dark blonde hair, while I had grey eyes and ash brown hair.My mother was strikingly beautiful, and my father never failed to remind her of that every day. My parents loved each other so much, and they didn’t hide it.My father had b
“Just a few hours ago, you wanted nothing to do with her, and now you want to speak to her?” Jake asked, narrowing his eyes.“I’m sorry, but this is really important. Can you find her?”“I guess, yes. But are you alright? You look kind of pale.”“I’m fine. Just find her, please.”He nodded before heading off.It couldn’t be possible. It just couldn’t be Falcone. I could have sworn I had never seen that man in my life, and yet, it had been him in that picture. Inside me, I knew it..“I knew you’d be calling for me soon enough, and so I stayed close.” My mother said with a smile.“Are you fine with her?” Jake asked. It took me a little too long to nod, and then I was leading her to my room. The moment we got in, I shoved her to the bed.She looked up at me, stunned.I really didn’t know what I was turning into. Earlier, I’d been violent with Logan, and yet he’d been kind enough to ignore that, and now my mother. I swallowed, taking a deep breath, and then I tossed the picture she had
