Chapter 2

Author: Cocojam
My cold tone gave Gideon pause.

He glanced back at me, a flicker of hurt in his deep green eyes.

But in the end, he said nothing and escorted Aveline from the hall.

The second he was gone, the whispers started.

"See that she-wolf with the Beta Gideon? That's Aveline, right? The one who saved him."

"Yeah, that's her. I heard she took a silver bullet for him. Nearly died. It wrecked her wolf and shattered her mind."

"No wonder he hovers over her like that. A life debt is a heavy burden. I'd probably do the same."

"It's more than a burden; it's a chain. He's tied to her for life. If they end up mating, at least the debt will be paid."

The words were like daggers of ice, piercing my heart.

So, in everyone's eyes, I was the joke. The outsider.

The foolish woman who dared to get in the way of true love.

I downed my champagne in one go. The burn in my throat was nothing compared to the ache in my chest.

After the festival, Gideon didn't contact me through our mental link. That was a first.

Usually, after any gathering, he'd be the first to check in, making sure no one had said anything to upset me.

But tonight, there was only silence.

I sat in my room, staring at my blank phone screen, feeling hollowed out.

Around midnight, I found myself scrolling through his social media page.

He'd actually posted a picture.

It was Aveline, fast asleep on his broad shoulder, her cheek pressed against his chest in peaceful contentment.

The caption was a single word: "Her."

The comments flooded in instantly. "A match made in heaven!" "Congratulations, Beta!"

The world stopped.

I felt the blood drain from my face, my fingers trembling so hard I could barely hold my phone.

Five years. For five whole years, his page had been a barren wasteland, without a single trace of me.

And Aveline gets a public declaration not long after her return.

I numbly liked the post, like a polite guest at a party I was never invited to.

When I refreshed the page, the post was gone.

He'd deleted it.

The realization was somehow more pathetic than the post itself.

He wanted to appease his precious savior, but he was afraid I'd see it and cause a scene. A coward's way out.

A second later, a message from Aveline popped up.

"Gideon brought me home and I fell asleep. He said my scent calms him, so he's staying the night. You don't mind, do you, Thalia?"

I stared at the words, the room spinning around me.

He said her scent calmed him?

What about all those nights I spent soothing his anxiety through our link? What was all that?

I sent back a curt "K."

Then, a message from Gideon came through.

"Aveline lost her moonstone, and she's spiraling. I need the obsidian necklace I gave you. Its calming properties are the best. Just let her borrow it for now. She's really unstable, Thalia. I can't risk something happening to her."

I froze.

The obsidian necklace was my eighteenth birthday present from him.

He’d told me obsidian was a guardian stone, meant to protect me from nightmares.

I'd treasured it for five years, never once daring to wear it.

And now, he wanted me to give the protection he promised me to another woman?

I stared at the words for a long, long time, until my eyes burned, but no tears fell.

So this is what it felt like for your heart to die.

I turned off my phone, refusing to reply.

But the next morning at ten, Gideon showed up at the Alpha's estate with Aveline and a pile of gifts.

Gideon was an orphan. His parents, the last Beta pair, died for the pack. My parents raised him as their own.

It was a tradition for Gideon to pay his respects to my parents—the former Alpha and Luna, now the pack elders—after the Winter Solstice.

But bringing Aveline with him meant something else entirely.

My parents welcomed them warmly, naturally assuming Aveline was Gideon's chosen mate.

"Aveline, you're as lovely as ever," my mother said, taking her hand. "We were all so worried when you left. It's good to have you back."

"Thank you, Luna," Aveline replied with a sweet smile. "I'm so happy to be here again."

A few honeyed words and the elders were beaming.

I, on the other hand, maintained the polite distance expected of the Alpha's sister.

"Beta Gideon, Miss Aveline, please, have a seat."

My formal tone made Gideon's expression darken.

He shot a question through our link: "What's your problem?"

I blocked him.

At lunch, Gideon insisted on sitting in the chair next to me.

That was my brother's seat.

Ronan looked at him, then at the empty chair next to Aveline, and raised an eyebrow.

"Gideon, your seat is over there."

Gideon stubbornly stood his ground. "I want to sit here."

The air grew thick with tension.

After a tense standoff, Gideon ended up sitting across from me.

His eyes were fixed on my empty plate, a displeased frown on his face.

"Thalia, why aren't you eating?"

I ignored him completely.

My mother brought up the topic at the table. "Thalia, look at Gideon, he's about to find his mate. When are you going to bond with someone?"

In the past, I would have blushed and changed the subject.

But this time, I agreed with surprising enthusiasm.

"If you or Ronan know anyone suitable, I'd love to meet them. Even an Alpha from an allied pack would be fine."

After the hearing, I cut off all contact with Gideon.I deleted his number, blocked any possible mental link, and even got a new phone.Gideon became a cautionary tale. The pack's laughingstock."Did you hear? The Beta claimed Princess Thalia was his mate in the middle of a hearing.""And he couldn't even produce a mark. So humiliating.""I always thought there was something off about him. The way he was always staring at the princess.""Well, it's affecting his job now. I heard the Alpha is looking for a new Beta."The gossip completely broke Gideon. He tried to storm the manor several times, only to be ruthlessly thrown out by Ronan's guards. The first time, it was a warning. The second time, they used force. The third time, the guards threw him past the gates."Give Gideon a message for me," Ronan told the guards coldly. "If he sets one foot in this manor again, treat him as a trespasser."Meanwhile, Liam moved into our pack's healing center. He was acting in his official capacity a

Liam was faster. He shifted in a black blur, a massive wolf a full head taller than Gideon. The two wolves tore into each other in the small private room.Furniture splintered. Claws ripped deep gouges in the walls."Stop! Both of you, stop!"I screamed my lungs out, but the two maddened wolves couldn't hear me.Less than three minutes later, the restaurant's alarms blared. The pack's enforcement squad arrived in seconds.Six heavily armed enforcers stormed the room, using special silver nets to separate the two wolves."Enough!"The lead officer barked. "Shifting and fighting in a public place! Do you want to end up in a cage?"Forced back into their human forms, Gideon and Liam stood panting. Both were bleeding, their clothes shredded."You're coming with us. Now," the officer commanded. "Moonstone Pack Council Hall. This will be settled immediately."Half an hour later, we were standing in the solemn Council Hall.Seven Elders sat on the high tribunal seats, my parents among them.R

I blocked all of Gideon's attempts to connect and focused on driving.By the time I reached the restaurant, I was perfectly calm.It was an elegant, high-end place that catered exclusively to werewolf nobility.A waiter led me to the private room. The moment he opened the door, I saw Liam.He was even more impressive in person.Tall, powerfully built, with a sharp jawline and deep gray eyes.He radiated calm, dependable strength."Thalia?" He stood, his voice deep and warm. "I'm Liam.""Hello." I reached out and shook his hand. His hand was warm and strong. Safe."Please, sit." Liam pulled out my chair, a perfect gentleman.Once we were seated, he took a small, elegant box from his suit pocket."A small gift, for our first meeting."I opened the box, and my eyes lit up.Inside was a beautifully carved moonstone in the shape of a small wolf. The lines of the wolf were fluid and graceful. Tiny silver threads formed its eyes, sparkling in the light."I carved it myself," he said, a soft s

I met Aveline's challenge with an icy stare."You're right, Aveline."My voice was unnervingly calm. "Gideon does desire me. So what? There's nothing between us but family. That's it."Aveline's eyes went wide. She clearly didn't expect me to be so blunt.I continued, "If you're so confident, go claim him yourself.""Stop wasting your time on me."I walked to the door and pulled it open."Leave."Aveline's face was white with rage. She snatched the moonstone box from the table and shot me a venomous glare."You'll regret this, Thalia."She stormed out of my room, her heels clicking angrily on the floor. The moment the door slammed shut, my body gave out.I collapsed onto the edge of my bed, my hands shaking.Memories of my past life flooded me.It was three months after our bonding. Aveline came to find me.She held out her phone, showing me endless logs of their private mental links."See this?" she'd sneered. "Last night, right after you two fucked, he mind-linked me. Told me how emp

Ronan appeared out of nowhere. I spun around, forcing a perfect smile onto my face."Brother, Gideon was just asking for ideas. For a marking ceremony gift for Aveline."I kept my voice light and easy. "He cornered me. Said he wouldn't let me leave until I gave him a real answer."Gideon's face darkened. He grabbed my arm. His grip was a painful warning."Thalia, you—""If it's for her, why don't you just ask her?"Ronan cut him off. Amusement flickered in his golden eyes."Why are you asking our Thalia?"He paused, his voice dripped with insinuation."Unless... the gift is really for Thalia?"A blush crept up Gideon's cheeks. He opened his mouth to deny it, but no words came out.I seized the chance. I pried his fingers off my arm and stumbled two steps back."Beta Gideon, Aveline is injured. Shouldn't you be with her?""Who said I'm bonding with her?!"Gideon's voice boomed, raw and spiraling."When did I ever say that?!"His shout echoed in the night air. Guards in the distance turn

Gideon's outburst silenced the entire bonfire.Everyone stared at us, stunned.Ronan was the most shocked of all. "Gideon, what did you just say? Thalia is your what?"My heart hammered against my ribs, blood rushing to my head. But his rigid expression quickly told me I was wrong. If he'd wanted to go public, he would have done it five years ago.I immediately jumped in, my laugh light and airy. "Don't mind him, brother. Beta Gideon's had too much to drink. You know how he loves to joke around with me."My voice sounded so natural, as if it were all just a game between friends. But my hand, wrapped around my glass, was shaking.Gideon stared at me, his eyes wide with disbelief and the raw sting of betrayal. He opened his mouth, about to say something.Just then, a sharp, metallic clang cut through the silence.Aveline had "accidentally" knocked over a silver knife from the table. The blade skittered across the wood, heading straight for her leg."Ah!"She cried out as the silver edge
