Chapter 3

Author: Cocojam
Any other time, I would have shut him down instantly.

But when I actually agreed, Ronan beamed.

He clapped me on the shoulder, his voice booming. "Thalia, you're finally seeing reason!"

"Just say the word, and after dinner, I'll set you up with the hottest Alpha in the entire Alliance!"

I laughed and said yes, letting my eyes drift over to Gideon.

His lips were a thin, hard line, his face dark with fury.

As we were laughing, he suddenly cut in, "Thalia, don't get the wrong idea. Aveline is just—"

"Just a friend," he clarified, his voice tight with nerves. "We're not like that."

A sly glint appeared in Ronan's eyes. He immediately jumped in. "Oh? That's great! Then why don't you and our Thalia get together? It's a good way to keep her in the pack. We wouldn't have to marry her off to some random Alpha."

My heart gave a hard thump.

For one shameful second, I thought he'd agree.

I thought he'd use this chance to finally announce our five-year relationship, to give me a proper title.

But Gideon immediately rejected the idea.

"Don't be ridiculous. Thalia is like a sister to me."

His tone was firm, without a hint of hesitation.

"We could never be like that."

My world shattered. I could almost hear the sound of my own heart breaking.

Like a sister to me.

For five years, he had used that phrase to build me a gilded cage, where I served as his secret lover, hidden from the world.

I forced a smile, my facial muscles feeling stiff and unnatural. "That's right. We grew up together. Beta Gideon has always taken good care of me."

Every word felt like swallowing shards of glass.

Aveline added softly, "Thalia is as sweet as a sister. Gideon talks about you all the time."

Her smile was sweet and harmless, but the triumph in her eyes was unmistakable.

After the meal, Gideon left with Aveline, and for the next few days, we had no contact.

I went about my days, eating, drinking, and eagerly attending any party thrown by the young wolves of the pack.

A few days later, at the full moon bonfire, Ronan found me lounging around and insisted I go with him.

I was already in bed and refused to budge.

But he was persistent. "Tonight is a huge moment for Gideon! We all grew up together, you have to be there to see it!"

I didn't know what he meant until we got there. There was a special event planned.

"I heard Aveline is going to formally ask Gideon to mate with her tonight."

"For real? Is Gideon ready to mark her?"

"I heard he even had a bonding gown custom-made for her at the best tailor in town."

The whispers stabbed at my ears like needles.

A bonding gown.

He had never done anything like that for me.

Mating with me wasn't even part of his plan.

When the party started, many young wolves approached me.

Several were Alphas from allied packs—handsome, powerful, and all good prospects.

"Thalia, may I have this dance?"

"You look beautiful tonight."

I moved among them gracefully, offering a polite smile here and there.

Across the bonfire, Gideon watched me in silence.

His eyes were dark, like a sky before a storm.

Every time a male got too close to me, his fists would clench at his sides.

But he did nothing.

Because Aveline was right there, clinging to his arm.

"Thalia."

Aveline found me during a break and pulled me into a corner.

"I'm going to formally ask Gideon to mate with me tonight. Can you help me?"

Her voice was soft, pleading. "Use your close, brother-sister relationship to help me out? I know he spoils you. He'll do anything you say."

I looked at her hopeful face, my fingers digging into my palms as a wave of irony washed over me.

Aveline looked as gentle as water, but her heart was full of schemes.

She knew about us. And she knew Gideon would never claim me publicly.

She wanted to use that, to make me personally push the man I loved into another woman's arms.

She wanted to grind me under her heel.

But Aveline didn't know that after my last life, my heart was completely dead when it came to Gideon.

"Of course," I promised with a radiant smile. "I'll help you."

When dinner began, Gideon's attention was glued to me.

He kept putting food on my plate, pouring me juice, his gaze so intense it hurt.

"Thalia, you've barely eaten anything."

"Try this. It's your favorite honey-roasted duck."

I refused him coldly. "Thank you, but I'm not hungry. You should go take care of Aveline."

"She looks like she needs your attention."

Gideon's face darkened, but he couldn't lash out in front of everyone.

When other wolves offered Aveline strong liquor, Gideon downed it for her.

"She can't handle hard liquor," he explained, his voice a low growl.

One glass, two, three...

With the crowd cheering him on, he took shot after shot for her.

When the atmosphere hit its peak, Aveline finally stood up.

Her cheeks were flushed with excitement, her eyes shimmering with tears.

"Gideon, I have something to say to you."

The entire clearing went silent.

"I love you. I've loved you since the moment we first met."

Her voice trembled with emotion. "Please, accept my request. Mate with me!"

The crowd erupted in a wild chorus of howls and cheers.

"Say yes! Say yes!"

"Don't hesitate, Gideon!"

Gideon paused, as if he hadn't seen this coming.

The stage was perfectly set. The heroine had made her brave declaration. All that was left was for the hero to nod his head.

A publicly acclaimed mating, a match made by fate, was about to be born.

Watching the two of them in the flickering firelight, I joined in, clapping and shouting, "Say yes, Beta Gideon! The Moon Goddess is watching!"

Gideon's head snapped toward me, his face a mask of disbelief.

"Thalia, are you insane? Have you forgotten you're my mate?! What the hell are you doing?!"

After the hearing, I cut off all contact with Gideon.I deleted his number, blocked any possible mental link, and even got a new phone.Gideon became a cautionary tale. The pack's laughingstock."Did you hear? The Beta claimed Princess Thalia was his mate in the middle of a hearing.""And he couldn't even produce a mark. So humiliating.""I always thought there was something off about him. The way he was always staring at the princess.""Well, it's affecting his job now. I heard the Alpha is looking for a new Beta."The gossip completely broke Gideon. He tried to storm the manor several times, only to be ruthlessly thrown out by Ronan's guards. The first time, it was a warning. The second time, they used force. The third time, the guards threw him past the gates."Give Gideon a message for me," Ronan told the guards coldly. "If he sets one foot in this manor again, treat him as a trespasser."Meanwhile, Liam moved into our pack's healing center. He was acting in his official capacity a

Liam was faster. He shifted in a black blur, a massive wolf a full head taller than Gideon. The two wolves tore into each other in the small private room.Furniture splintered. Claws ripped deep gouges in the walls."Stop! Both of you, stop!"I screamed my lungs out, but the two maddened wolves couldn't hear me.Less than three minutes later, the restaurant's alarms blared. The pack's enforcement squad arrived in seconds.Six heavily armed enforcers stormed the room, using special silver nets to separate the two wolves."Enough!"The lead officer barked. "Shifting and fighting in a public place! Do you want to end up in a cage?"Forced back into their human forms, Gideon and Liam stood panting. Both were bleeding, their clothes shredded."You're coming with us. Now," the officer commanded. "Moonstone Pack Council Hall. This will be settled immediately."Half an hour later, we were standing in the solemn Council Hall.Seven Elders sat on the high tribunal seats, my parents among them.R

I blocked all of Gideon's attempts to connect and focused on driving.By the time I reached the restaurant, I was perfectly calm.It was an elegant, high-end place that catered exclusively to werewolf nobility.A waiter led me to the private room. The moment he opened the door, I saw Liam.He was even more impressive in person.Tall, powerfully built, with a sharp jawline and deep gray eyes.He radiated calm, dependable strength."Thalia?" He stood, his voice deep and warm. "I'm Liam.""Hello." I reached out and shook his hand. His hand was warm and strong. Safe."Please, sit." Liam pulled out my chair, a perfect gentleman.Once we were seated, he took a small, elegant box from his suit pocket."A small gift, for our first meeting."I opened the box, and my eyes lit up.Inside was a beautifully carved moonstone in the shape of a small wolf. The lines of the wolf were fluid and graceful. Tiny silver threads formed its eyes, sparkling in the light."I carved it myself," he said, a soft s

I met Aveline's challenge with an icy stare."You're right, Aveline."My voice was unnervingly calm. "Gideon does desire me. So what? There's nothing between us but family. That's it."Aveline's eyes went wide. She clearly didn't expect me to be so blunt.I continued, "If you're so confident, go claim him yourself.""Stop wasting your time on me."I walked to the door and pulled it open."Leave."Aveline's face was white with rage. She snatched the moonstone box from the table and shot me a venomous glare."You'll regret this, Thalia."She stormed out of my room, her heels clicking angrily on the floor. The moment the door slammed shut, my body gave out.I collapsed onto the edge of my bed, my hands shaking.Memories of my past life flooded me.It was three months after our bonding. Aveline came to find me.She held out her phone, showing me endless logs of their private mental links."See this?" she'd sneered. "Last night, right after you two fucked, he mind-linked me. Ronan appeared out of nowhere. I spun around, forcing a perfect smile onto my face."Brother, Gideon was just asking for ideas. For a marking ceremony gift for Aveline."I kept my voice light and easy. "He cornered me. Said he wouldn't let me leave until I gave him a real answer."Gideon's face darkened. He grabbed my arm. His grip was a painful warning."Thalia, you—""If it's for her, why don't you just ask her?"Ronan cut him off. Amusement flickered in his golden eyes."Why are you asking our Thalia?"He paused, his voice dripped with insinuation."Unless... the gift is really for Thalia?"A blush crept up Gideon's cheeks. He opened his mouth to deny it, but no words came out.I seized the chance. I pried his fingers off my arm and stumbled two steps back."Beta Gideon, Aveline is injured. Shouldn't you be with her?""Who said I'm bonding with her?!"Gideon's voice boomed, raw and spiraling."When did I ever say that?!"His shout echoed in the night air. Guards in the distance turn

Gideon's outburst silenced the entire bonfire.Everyone stared at us, stunned.Ronan was the most shocked of all. "Gideon, what did you just say? Thalia is your what?"My heart hammered against my ribs, blood rushing to my head. But his rigid expression quickly told me I was wrong. If he'd wanted to go public, he would have done it five years ago.I immediately jumped in, my laugh light and airy. "Don't mind him, brother. Beta Gideon's had too much to drink. You know how he loves to joke around with me."My voice sounded so natural, as if it were all just a game between friends. But my hand, wrapped around my glass, was shaking.Gideon stared at me, his eyes wide with disbelief and the raw sting of betrayal. He opened his mouth, about to say something.Just then, a sharp, metallic clang cut through the silence.Aveline had "accidentally" knocked over a silver knife from the table. The blade skittered across the wood, heading straight for her leg."Ah!"She cried out as the silver edge
