Chapter 1

Author: Cocojam
For five years, Gideon—my brother's Beta—and I had a secret.

We were supposed to announce our mating at the pack's Winter Solstice festival.

Instead, he breathed hot against my ear.

"Babe, we've been sleeping together for five years. I'm bored with you. Find someone else for the marking ceremony, alright?"

I didn't cry. I just gave a calm, simple nod. "Alright."

Only because in my last life, I had begged him through tears to complete the bond.

After he finally marked me, he grew cold.

He never again woke me by rubbing his stubbled chin against my forehead.

Even when we made love, he kept his eyes shut, as if he were with someone else, just using my body.

When I was in agony giving birth to our pup, fighting for my life, he left me.

He was going to comfort his savior, Aveline. The old wound she suffered saving him had relapsed, sending her into a mental spiral.

In that moment, I finally understood.

A mark I had to beg for was nothing but a curse, a wound that would never heal.

This time, I pulled away with a smile, removing his hand from my waist. "You're right. I'm tired of it, too. We're done."

...

Gideon’s breath caught in his throat at my blunt reply.

He dropped his arm from my waist, and pure shock flashed in his deep green eyes.

In five years, I had never taken one of his cruel jokes so calmly.

Every time he'd joked about me finding someone else, I’d fall apart, my eyes turning red as I shut him up with tears and kisses.

And he would always soften, holding me tight and whispering, "Shh, don't cry. I was just kidding."

But today was different.

The playful smirk vanished from Gideon’s face. He studied me, his gaze sharp enough to see right through me.

"Thalia, do you have any idea what you're saying?" He took a step forward. His presence was overwhelming, aggressive. He thought he could force me back into the obedient girl I used to be.

I held his gaze with a graceful smile, even taking a small step back to put some much-needed distance between us. "Of course. You're the one who told me to find someone else, remember?"

The image of my last life flashed in my mind: me on the birthing bed, sheets stained crimson, while he peeled an apple for another woman in the next room.

My inner wolf whined in grief, but my mind was made up. I was letting him go.

This time, I would kill the girl who lived only for him.

Gideon's brow furrowed. He knew something was wrong.

He reached out to touch my cheek, his go-to move to soothe me.

Just then, a commotion broke out nearby.

The sharp shatter of a crystal glass echoed through the hall.

A figure in white, face in her hands, bolted from the ballroom, sobbing.

Aveline.

My brother, Ronan, walked over, a glass of champagne in hand, and nudged Gideon with his elbow.

"Isn't that Aveline? Why'd you invite her to the Solstice festival?" Ronan's golden eyes glinted with curiosity. "She looks like a mess. All because of you, I bet."

Gideon's handsome face tightened. His eyes darted between me and the doorway.

I saw the conflict in them. The desperate urge to stay and explain, warring with the instinct to run after her.

In the end, instinct won.

"Sorry, I have to go check on her."

Before he left, he gave me a deep, complicated look. It broke my heart. His eyes seemed to say: Don't make a scene. Wait for me.

But he still turned and strode out without a backward glance.

My sharp hearing caught his soothing voice from the hall.

"Don't cry. What's wrong? Who hurt you?"

"Shh, I'm here now. No one's going to touch you."

Every single one of those words had been whispered to me during my own tearful nights. That tenderness wasn't special. It was just a script he could copy and paste for anyone.

My chest tightened, a physical ache that made it hard to breathe.

But I forced a smile, squared my shoulders, and walked to the buffet table.

I sliced off a piece of perfectly roasted lamb and put it in my mouth.

It tasted like ash.

I didn't reach out through our mental link to soothe his agitation, a habit I'd kept for the last five years.

For five years, he had never once acknowledged our bond in public.

He always claimed I was just his "little sister to look after."

Even when Ronan teased us, he’d just laugh it off.

"Not going after your boy, Gideon?"

Ronan sidled up to me, a smirk on his face. "Better watch out. Another she-wolf might snatch him up."

My hand paused mid-cut.

For a split second, the fork and knife nearly slipped from my trembling fingers.

"He's the pack's Beta. I'm just his 'little sister,' remember? What he does is none of my business."

Ronan froze, his golden eyes—so much like my own—trying to read me.

I raised my glass, my composure flawless as I forced my lips into a smile.

"To the Solstice, brother."

The truth was, omegas weren't typically invited to these high-level pack events.

Aveline was only here because Gideon had personally invited her.

We were supposed to announce our mating tonight.

In my last life, I threw a massive, tear-soaked tantrum over this.

Now, even with a knife twisting in my gut, I wouldn't say a word to make him stay.

Fifteen minutes later, they returned.

Aveline was plastered to Gideon's side. Her eyes were still puffy, but a satisfied smile played on her lips.

She was cloaked in his calming scent.

My inner wolf whimpered, curling into a tight, pained ball.

Gideon's eyes found me immediately. The moment he saw me standing elegantly by the table, his shoulders visibly relaxed.

That look of relief was a poisoned needle straight to my heart.

As if he could do whatever he wanted, as long as he knew I was still here, waiting.

"Wasn't she off at some healing retreat?" Ronan asked Gideon, his voice laced with amusement. "Now she's back, and you're suddenly glued to her hip? You planning on offering yourself as payment? Settle that life debt with a mating bond?"

Gideon shot a complicated, panicked look in my direction.

"Don't joke around, Alpha."

But he didn't push Aveline away.

She snuggled against him, occupying the space that used to be mine.

Even though I'd already decided to let go, the searing pain in my chest nearly made me lose my composure right there.

"Well, if Gideon's about to bond with his new mate, we shouldn't bother them."

I clung to the last shreds of my dignity, pulling my brother's arm. My voice was light, breezy.

"Your Beta needs his space. An Alpha shouldn't get too involved, you know."

After the hearing, I cut off all contact with Gideon.I deleted his number, blocked any possible mental link, and even got a new phone.Gideon became a cautionary tale. The pack's laughingstock."Did you hear? The Beta claimed Princess Thalia was his mate in the middle of a hearing.""And he couldn't even produce a mark. So humiliating.""I always thought there was something off about him. The way he was always staring at the princess.""Well, it's affecting his job now. I heard the Alpha is looking for a new Beta."The gossip completely broke Gideon. He tried to storm the manor several times, only to be ruthlessly thrown out by Ronan's guards. The first time, it was a warning. The second time, they used force. The third time, the guards threw him past the gates."Give Gideon a message for me," Ronan told the guards coldly. "If he sets one foot in this manor again, treat him as a trespasser."Meanwhile, Liam moved into our pack's healing center. He was acting in his official capacity a

Liam was faster. He shifted in a black blur, a massive wolf a full head taller than Gideon. The two wolves tore into each other in the small private room.Furniture splintered. Claws ripped deep gouges in the walls."Stop! Both of you, stop!"I screamed my lungs out, but the two maddened wolves couldn't hear me.Less than three minutes later, the restaurant's alarms blared. The pack's enforcement squad arrived in seconds.Six heavily armed enforcers stormed the room, using special silver nets to separate the two wolves."Enough!"The lead officer barked. "Shifting and fighting in a public place! Do you want to end up in a cage?"Forced back into their human forms, Gideon and Liam stood panting. Both were bleeding, their clothes shredded."You're coming with us. Now," the officer commanded. "Moonstone Pack Council Hall. This will be settled immediately."Half an hour later, we were standing in the solemn Council Hall.Seven Elders sat on the high tribunal seats, my parents among them.R

I blocked all of Gideon's attempts to connect and focused on driving.By the time I reached the restaurant, I was perfectly calm.It was an elegant, high-end place that catered exclusively to werewolf nobility.A waiter led me to the private room. The moment he opened the door, I saw Liam.He was even more impressive in person.Tall, powerfully built, with a sharp jawline and deep gray eyes.He radiated calm, dependable strength."Thalia?" He stood, his voice deep and warm. "I'm Liam.""Hello." I reached out and shook his hand. His hand was warm and strong. Safe."Please, sit." Liam pulled out my chair, a perfect gentleman.Once we were seated, he took a small, elegant box from his suit pocket."A small gift, for our first meeting."I opened the box, and my eyes lit up.Inside was a beautifully carved moonstone in the shape of a small wolf. The lines of the wolf were fluid and graceful. Tiny silver threads formed its eyes, sparkling in the light."I carved it myself," he said, a soft s

I met Aveline's challenge with an icy stare."You're right, Aveline."My voice was unnervingly calm. "Gideon does desire me. So what? There's nothing between us but family. That's it."Aveline's eyes went wide. She clearly didn't expect me to be so blunt.I continued, "If you're so confident, go claim him yourself.""Stop wasting your time on me."I walked to the door and pulled it open."Leave."Aveline's face was white with rage. She snatched the moonstone box from the table and shot me a venomous glare."You'll regret this, Thalia."She stormed out of my room, her heels clicking angrily on the floor. The moment the door slammed shut, my body gave out.I collapsed onto the edge of my bed, my hands shaking.Memories of my past life flooded me.It was three months after our bonding. Aveline came to find me.She held out her phone, showing me endless logs of their private mental links."See this?" she'd sneered. "Last night, right after you two fucked, he mind-linked me. Ronan appeared out of nowhere. I spun around, forcing a perfect smile onto my face."Brother, Gideon was just asking for ideas. For a marking ceremony gift for Aveline."I kept my voice light and easy. "He cornered me. Said he wouldn't let me leave until I gave him a real answer."Gideon's face darkened. He grabbed my arm. His grip was a painful warning."Thalia, you—""If it's for her, why don't you just ask her?"Ronan cut him off. Amusement flickered in his golden eyes."Why are you asking our Thalia?"He paused, his voice dripped with insinuation."Unless... the gift is really for Thalia?"A blush crept up Gideon's cheeks. He opened his mouth to deny it, but no words came out.I seized the chance. I pried his fingers off my arm and stumbled two steps back."Beta Gideon, Aveline is injured. Shouldn't you be with her?""Who said I'm bonding with her?!"Gideon's voice boomed, raw and spiraling."When did I ever say that?!"His shout echoed in the night air. Guards in the distance turn

Gideon's outburst silenced the entire bonfire.Everyone stared at us, stunned.Ronan was the most shocked of all. "Gideon, what did you just say? Thalia is your what?"My heart hammered against my ribs, blood rushing to my head. But his rigid expression quickly told me I was wrong. If he'd wanted to go public, he would have done it five years ago.I immediately jumped in, my laugh light and airy. "Don't mind him, brother. Beta Gideon's had too much to drink. You know how he loves to joke around with me."My voice sounded so natural, as if it were all just a game between friends. But my hand, wrapped around my glass, was shaking.Gideon stared at me, his eyes wide with disbelief and the raw sting of betrayal. He opened his mouth, about to say something.Just then, a sharp, metallic clang cut through the silence.Aveline had "accidentally" knocked over a silver knife from the table. The blade skittered across the wood, heading straight for her leg."Ah!"She cried out as the silver edge
