LOGINAfter the introduction, Lucas instructed Olivia to show Maddie to her new workspace.
"Follow me," Olivia said, trying to maintain a professional tone.
Maddie trailed behind her, a knowing glint in her eye. She was aware that Olivia's mind was buzzing with questions, and she was more than happy to provide all the answers. As they reached the office, Olivia gestured to the spacious room. "This is your office, and the files you need to sort out are on the table. They're fairly straightforward, but if you have any questions or need clarification on anything, don't hesitate to let me know." Maddie smiled, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "You don't have to sound so professional with me, you know," she said, her voice laced with warmth. Olivia raised an eyebrow, choosing to ignore Maddie's teasing comment. "Why didn't you tell me you were coming to work here?" she asked, her curiosity getting the better of her. Maddie shrugged, a hint of apology in her voice. "I had told Lucas earlier about me wanting to work here. He told me to send my qualifications to his email, but he didn't reply. I sent in everything he asked and finally, yesterday, he told me to start work. I wanted to secure the job before I told you. I was going to fill you in yesterday, but it wasn't exactly the right moment." Olivia's eyes narrowed slightly. "Why didn't you text or call me then?" she asked, her tone a mix of curiosity and mild reproach. Maddie's expression turned slightly somber. "I did call you, Olivia. I called you three times last night because I wanted to catch up and tell you about the job. But you didn't pick up, and you didn't call back." Olivia's face softened as she checked her phone, realizing that she had indeed missed Maddie's calls. After the events of the previous day, she had put her phone on Do Not Disturb mode and hadn't had a chance to check it thoroughly.“Oh—sorry. My bad,” Olivia said softly, a faint crease forming between her brows. A small weight settled in her chest, the familiar guilt of not always being as present as she wished she could be.
Maddie waved it off easily. “It’s fine. No problem at all.”
There was a brief pause. Olivia hesitated, her fingers curling slightly as she gathered the courage to speak again.
“Um… did you stay longer at my place yesterday?” she asked, forcing her tone to sound casual.
Maddie froze for a second. Her eyes widened in surprise before she quickly masked it with a light laugh. “No, not at all,” she replied. “Lucas asked me to leave, and I did. Immediately.” She tilted her head, studying Olivia’s face. “Why do you ask?”
Olivia’s heart skipped. She felt suddenly exposed, as though her thoughts were written plainly across her face. “Oh—nothing, really,” she said quickly, offering a nervous smile. “Just asking, you know. Out of curiosity.” She shrugged lightly, hoping the gesture would make the question seem harmless.
But inside, her thoughts were anything but calm. She remembered the maid’s words from earlier, the hesitation in her voice, the way she had avoided Olivia’s eyes. A cold knot tightened in Olivia’s stomach.
It can’t be true, she told herself. It has to be a misunderstanding. Maddie was her best friend. Her sister in everything but blood. The thought alone made her chest ache.
She tried to steady her breathing, pushing the doubt away. Maybe Lucas had been handling work matters. Maybe the maid had seen something and misinterpreted it. People talked. Rumors grew from nothing.
"Just curious?" Maddie asked raising her brows.
Olivia nodded slowly, forcing another smile, even as her heart thudded painfully in her chest. “Yeah… just curious,” she repeated, though her voice lacked conviction.
She turned away slightly, pretending to be distracted, all the while hoping, desperately, that the uneasy feeling crawling up her spine was wrong.
She didn’t know how much more betrayal her heart could take.
Maddie hesitated for a moment before speaking again. “So… how’s Lucas?” she asked carefully. “Have you two settled things yet?”
Olivia’s shoulders stiffened almost imperceptibly. The air around her seemed to tighten. She didn’t look up right away, her fingers busy with nothing as she searched for an answer that wouldn’t invite more questions.
“No,” she said quietly. “We haven’t.”
Maddie studied her face, concern flickering in her eyes. “Do you want to talk about it?”
Olivia shook her head at once. “No,” she replied, a little too quickly. She inhaled slowly, steadying herself. “I really don’t."
There was something final in her tone—not anger, not sadness, but exhaustion. The kind that came from reopening wounds too many times.
“It’s just…” Olivia paused, then stopped herself. She pressed her lips together and looked away. “I don’t want to talk about him right now.”
Maddie nodded slowly, understanding—or at least pretending to. “Okay,” she said softly. “We won’t.”
Relief washed over Olivia as she went back to her workspace.
She spent the morning compiling files, her mind concentrated on the task at hand. Once she finished, she gathered the documents and headed to Lucas's office.
As she approached his door, she felt a familiar knot in her stomach. She had been avoiding him ever since their confrontation, and the thought of facing him again made her anxious. She prayed that he wouldn't be in his office, hoping to avoid an awkward encounter. But fate seemed to have other plans. As she reached the door, she heard Lucas's voice, low and husky, speaking into the phone. His door was slightly ajar, and Olivia's curiosity got the better of her. She hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should knock or wait until he finished his call. As she stood there, frozen in indecision, she heard Lucas's words more clearly. "I love you, baby," he said, his voice filled with affection. Olivia's heart skipped a beat as she heard the feminine voice on the other end of the line respond, "I love you, too, my love." The voice sounded eerily familiar, and Olivia's mind began to reel. Who was Lucas talking to? And why did the voice sound so hauntingly familiar?Olivia staggered back a step, her hands trembling as she clutched at her chest.“I– I’m sorry,” she choked out. “I didn’t mean to bump into you. I was just… I was—”Her voice broke completely. The words refused to come. Her breath hitched, sharp and uneven, as though her lungs had forgotten how to work. Tears spilled freely now, blurring everything in front of her. Her knees weakened without warning, and she swayed.“Hey—”The man dropped his bag instantly and reached out, steadying her before she could collapse.“Easy,” he said, his voice softer now, lined with concern. “Are you okay?”She shook her head, unable to answer. Her body betrayed her, folding inward as she struggled to breathe. One hand pressed tightly to her chest as if holding herself together.“I’m sorry,” she whispered again, almost incoherent. “I’m really sorry… I didn’t mean to—”He frowned, clearly alarmed. “No, no. I shouldn’t have shouted at you earlier. That was my fault.” He hesitated, then added gently, “Is thi
Olivia woke with a sharp inhale. Her jaw clenched immediately.Anger was the first thing she felt, refusing to fade even with daylight creeping through the curtains. The image of the night before flashed in her mind: Maddie’s silhouette disappearing into the crowd, Julian’s grip on her arm, his voice telling her to stop, to think. Her fingers curled into the sheets. She was so close. Her phone vibrated beside her pillow. She didn’t even need to look to know who it was.Julian.She snatched the phone and glanced at the screen.'I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have grabbed you like that. I was just worried. Please talk to me.'Her lips twisted.“Fuck you,” she hissed, tossing the phone onto the bed like it had burned her fingers.Another vibration followed almost immediately—this time a call. Her temper snapped.“I said leave me the fuck alone, man!” she shouted, grabbing the phone and pressing it to her ear without checking. There was a pause on the other end. Then—“Madam Olivia?” Matilda’s ca
*********************The car door slammed shut behind Maddie. She laughed breathlessly as she fumbled with her seatbelt, her movements clumsy, her fingers missing the latch twice before finally clicking it in place.“God,” she muttered, pushing her hair out of her face. “Why does everything feel like it’s spinning?”The man beside her didn’t laugh. Instead, he checked the side mirror. Then the rearview. Once more, slower this time.Maddie noticed.“Shuga,” she said suddenly, squinting through the windshield. “I felt like someone was following us.”He paused. Then smiled easy and dismissive.“You’re imagining things,” he said. “You had too much to drink.”Maddie frowned, leaning forward slightly, peering down the street as the car rolled off.“No,” she insisted. “I swear. I felt eyes on me. Like—” She snapped her fingers. “—like someone was right there.”He exhaled. “No one was there.”She leaned back in her seat, studying his face. The streetlights slid across his features, lighting h
The sun had barely dipped beneath the skyline when Olivia walked briskly into the parking lot, high heels clicking with purpose. Her mind spun from what she had just seen on Maddie’s phone. At first, the message had seemed like a desperate, almost romantic plea. But something nagged at her now. As she stood beside her car, Olivia unlocked her own phone and opened the screenshot again. Her eyes scanned the message again and again, and there it was. A small line of text beneath the main message that she’d completely overlooked in the heat of the moment. “Bei Interesse treffen wir uns um 19:30 Uhr auf dem Delancey Rooftop” She frowned. German? Her brows furrowed as she copied the text into a translator. Her blood ran cold. “If you are interested, we will meet at 7:30 pm on the Delancey Rooftop.” She quickly searched for The Delancey Rooftop, and within seconds, images of a stylish club-bar with dim lighting, loud music, and panoramic views of the city skyline filled her sc
The message was still glowing on Maddie’s screen when Olivia stared down at it again. No. No way Lucas wrote this. She knew him. For all his charm, arrogance, and haunting mystery, Lucas wasn’t… this. He was calculated. Careful. Always five steps ahead. He would never be this direct. Not this sloppy. Not when he had so much to lose. Which could only mean one thing. She’s cheating on him. The thought made Olivia’s stomach twist with disbelief, and something darker. A whole Maddie, Lucas’s wife, sneaking around like some desperate side piece? “Oh, how the tables have turned,” Olivia whispered, eyes narrowing. She reached for her phone with lightning reflexes and snapped a quick picture of the screen. The moment the screenshot was saved, she locked Maddie’s phone and gently placed it back on the bench like nothing had happened. She exhaled through her nose and straightened her spine just as the studio door creaked open. Right on cue, the bathroom door creaked open. O
The moment Maddie hit the floor, time froze. A sharp gasp cut through the studio like a blade. Her palms slapped against the polished wood, her knee grazing slightly as she caught herself, but the fall wasn’t what made everyone go still. It was Clara’s expression, her eyes widened and her lips parted, voice bubbling over with apologies. “Oh my God! Maddie, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to! Are you okay?” Clara rushed forward, hands fluttering near Maddie’s shoulders but not quite touching. Maddie scowled, brushing her off. “I’m fine.” “No, seriously, I didn’t even see you there,my turn was too fast…” “You pushed me,” Maddie snapped. Clara blinked, letting her voice crack just enough. “No! No, I, God, it must’ve looked like that, but I swear it wasn’t intentional!” Olivia stayed back, arms crossed. Her face was unreadable, but her eyes flicked toward Clara in secret amusement. Maddie pushed up to stand, her movements tense. “Just keep your hands to yourself next time.”
