Yvette

After finishing up at the office I went back home and immediately I stepped inside, before I could say jack my phone started ringing again.

Oh my dayssss. How I wanted to scream my ass off.

Did I suddenly get popular overnight for my phone to have been ringing nonstop since morning? I begrudgingly picked the phone up from the table and glanced down at the screen.

Jaxon Vale.

Oh, that was a surprise. My cousin was calling.

“Jaxon?” I answered in a calm voice. He was always pleasant to talk to… I mean most of the time.

“Yvette, are you off work now? Are you busy?” He asked slightly hesitantly.

I glanced at the slice of apple in my hand and leaned back against the sofa.

“No, I just got home, what’s up?” I asked and he paused briefly before speaking again, sounding unusually excited.

“I just got promoted today and guess what?? I got a raise too…. AHHHHHHH” he screamed so loudly I had to take the phone out of my ears for some time so he wouldn't end up making me deaf.

Jaxon was very dramatic like that.

“I’m sorry… I’m really sorry, I’m just too excited.” He apologized and I nodded as if he could see me. “It’s fine,” I replied with a small smile.

“My parents said they haven't seen you in a while and wanted to invite you to dinner with us tonight.” He finally spit out the reason he was calling and a small smile touched my lips.

Jaxon’s parents had always treated me kindly.

Back when my mother left the pack after her divorce and we had almost nothing, it was my uncle Philip and his wife who quietly helped us survive those difficult years.

They had never had a daughter of their own, so they treated me like one.

“Alright, I’ll come,” I said softly.

“Great, I’ll come pick you up.” He replied quickly.

After the call ended, I stood up from the couch and one of the maids who had been tidying the living room, looked at me curiously.

“I’m going out for dinner,” I told her and she nodded, but I noticed the way she studied my face carefully.

Gina had worked for the Draven household for years. She knew me better than most people.

And she knew one thing very well.

I wasn’t someone who simply endured things quietly.

If I stayed silent…

It meant I was planning something and right now? Maybe I was planning something. It was up to her to think whatever she wanted anyway.

I grabbed my bag and left the villa.

The evening air outside was so cool and refreshing that I felt like stripping off my clothes and going for a run but I shook the thought off my head.

Tonight I was going to have dinner with Jaxon and his family and I would make the best time out of it.

As I walked toward the entrance gate, my phone buzzed again. It was a message from Jaxon.

Jaxon: My car just ran out of gas, wait there for a minute.

“Okay.” I texted back immediately.

Jaxon was three years older than me and already twenty-seven this year. My uncle and aunt were always worried about him settling down, but he never seemed interested in finding a mate.

So even though I didn’t interact much with the main Vale family anymore, I still visited my uncle’s home often.

To me, they were more family than the Dravens ever were.

I had only been waiting outside the neighborhood for a few minutes when my phone rang again.

“Yvette,” Jaxon said quickly, “it’s rush hour and I’m stuck far away. I asked a friend nearby to pick you up instead.”

Just as he finished speaking, a sleek black car pulled up in front of me.

Before I could react, the tinted window rolled down slowly and my breath caught.

I knew him… the person he had sent to pick me up was someone familiar… someone I hadn’t seen in years.

“I think… I see him.” I murmured, clutching my phone tightly.

The man sitting in the driver’s seat had sharp, defined features that were impossible to forget.

He wore a black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, exposing his strong, tanned forearms.

But what struck me most wasn’t his appearance, it was the powerful aura surrounding him.

The unmistakable presence of a high-ranking Alpha.

Alpha Soren Blackwood, leader of the Blackwood Pack and one of the most powerful packs in the northern territories.

Nine years ago, when I visited my uncle in a remote mountain town, my uncle had rescued an injured traveler who had fallen down a cliff.

That traveler had been Soren.

Back then, I was still young and curious. I used to follow him around with a book in my hands, pestering him with endless questions while he recovered.

I didn’t learn his true identity as the heir of the Blackwood Pack until later on.

And now that he was driving so closely towards me, his window rolled down, he looked…even more imposing than before, and dare I say more handsome?

His dark eyes lifted slowly to meet mine and for a brief moment, something unreadable flickered in them.

Perhaps he was remembering the past too, the little girl who used to trail after him endlessly.

But that girl was gone.

Tonight I wore a fitted smoke-purple dress, my hair pulled back into a high ponytail. I wasn’t that little bubbly girl anymore… I was now a drained miserable Luna who hated her life but was willing to make the very best of her last days.

Soren’s gaze darkened slightly as he studied me, then his lips parted.

“Get in.”

I ended the call with Jaxon and walked toward the car.

Once inside, I sat in the back seat instinctively, placing my hands neatly on my knees.

The silence inside the car was thick.

Soren didn’t speak.

But his presence was making me somewhat uncomfortable.. When did he have this aura? Or was this because he was an Alpha now?

I chuckled at the thought and laughed at my silliness.

“What’s funny Yvette?” He asked in that deep voice of his and I felt my tongue tie..

Oh oh… did that slip out? “Ummm, nothing is funny,” I replied, swallowing down nothing and this time it was his turn to chuckle.

“Hello, Princess.” He said and I froze.

Princess… that was the nickname he had for me. So he hadn’t forgotten that name since all these years?

YvetteThe next day passed in a blur.Between meetings with Scott, reviewing project notes, and making final adjustments to my proposal, I barely had time to think about anything else.Which was probably a good thing.Because every time my mind wandered, it somehow found its way back to Soren and the very outstanding dress he had bought me.I also found myself thinking too much about the fact that someone had sent me a photograph with the words: I found you.I still hadn't figured out who sent it. And honestly? I was too busy to care right now, even if whoever it was found me for the purpose of harm, I still didn’t care. They had better stopped the hiding game and come out from the shadows or they could remain hidden forever. The banquet was going to start by seven. So by six-thirty, I was standing in front of a mirror inside one of the hotel's private suites. The blue gown fit perfectly, it was almost a surprise that anyone aside me could get me a dress that was tailored to perfect

YvetteI hated that the simple word “princess” affected me so much, especially because the man on the other end of the line sounded entirely too pleased with himself."Do you really think you have to pay me back for a mere dress, princess?" Soren asked again, his deep voice dripping with amusement."Mere dress?" I repeated, glancing down at the expensive gown again. "This dress probably costs more than some wolves earn in a year."A low chuckle came through the phone."Then perhaps they should consider becoming Alphas." The smug, proud man replied, and I rolled my eyes. He was so insufferable. But somehow...I found myself smiling."You're impossible.""So I've been told." He replied, and for a moment neither of us spoke. Then curiosity got the better of me, because I was still wondering why exactly he even bought me a dress out of the blue. "Why did you even send it?" I asked. "Because you needed it." He replied, and I frowned. What did he mean by I needed it? Needed it for what?

YvetteBy the next morning, I was already sitting in Scott's office with three cups of coffee between us and enough notes scattered across the desk to start a small war.Scott looked completely invested, and me on the other hand? I looked completely possessed. It was funny, but seeing that there was a possibility my idea could come to life and someone was interested in it actually gave me a sense of purpose. "You realize we've been discussing this for over two hours?" Scott asked eventually."Have we?" I blinked, and he laughed."You really are back, there’s the Yvette I know." He said, and I smiled softly. Those words hit harder than they should have, because maybe I was.For the first time in years, I wasn't waking up wondering how to make Kael love me or obsessing over how to make my family see that Lyra was the liar and not me I also wasn't trying to earn approval from people who had already decided I wasn't enough. I was working.Actually working on something I truly loved an

YvetteFor a second, neither of us moved.I sat inside my car, clutching the medicine bottle while Kael stood beside his black SUV across the street. The distance between us wasn't much, yet somehow it felt like there was an entire ocean separating us. His eyes dropped briefly to the bottle in my hand before returning to my face, and my heart skipped for a moment.Oh my goodness!!I hope he didn’t see the medicine bottle? Because I absolutely didn’t have the strength or time to start explaining anything to him. I quickly shoved the medicine back into my bag and started the engine. Whatever Kael was doing outside the Nightshade mansion was none of my business. Just like whatever happened in my life was none of his.Unfortunately, Kael clearly disagreed, because the moment I pulled out of the driveway, his SUV followed.I stared into the rearview mirror for about three different times, and he was still there following me like he was trying to trace me or something."You've got to be k

Yvette"If she's so much better than me..." I repeated calmly, looking directly at Lyra. “Then why has she spent her entire life feeling threatened by me?"The room went silent, and Lyra's face turned pale immediately."Yvette." Her mother warned sharply."What? I'm just genuinely curious, that’s all. Because from where I'm standing, someone who is prettier, smarter, kinder, more successful, and more loved shouldn't need to compete with anyone." "Yet somehow Lyra is always competing with me. Why?” I asked.Nobody said a word, even her father, the macho man and defender of the universe, couldn’t seem to have words to defend her this time around."That's enough." Darius finally snapped when he found his voice again."No, it really isn’t." I laughed softly, and my eyes landed on Lyra."Let's count them together.""You wanted my father, then you wanted my brothers, you wanted my family, you wanted my place in this house, you wanted everyone to choose you, and they did, yet you’re still n

Yvette “Wait, Grandma, did you call me here because Lyra was upset about some non-existent spot she claims to be hers or because you wanted me to prepare steak for you just the way you liked it?” I asked, hoping it was the latter. I knew that Grandma wasn’t like the rest of them and wouldn’t do anything to hurt me, but still I was compelled to ask.“Of course not, don’t be silly, Yvette, are you suspecting me? I don’t even have any idea what they’re talking about.” She said, a little pissed, and I heaved a sigh of relief.“You shouldn’t have asked her that.” Isla scolded, and I sighed because I knew it was wrong of me to have done that. Maybe I was becoming too defensive lately. But could anyone really blame me?These people had spent years proving that every time they called me back here, it was never because they missed me. It was always because of Lyra.“I am sorry.” I crouched beside Grandma's wheelchair immediately, and she pinched my cheek.“You've become far too suspicious.”
