ALEXANDER’S POV

I walked down the corridor. Around me, warriors moved in preparation for battle.

I made my way to the war room.

I was supposed to discuss the secret army’s progress with Eliza, but as I approached, hushed voices caught my attention. No—not hushed, heated. A conversation was unfolding just beyond the doors.

I could hear words being exchanged.

I recognized the voices as Eliza and Derek.

I heard Derek ask her, “Then why did you agree to the marriage?”

Eliza responded, “Because my mother didn’t want me to die like my father and brothers. She wanted to protect me, and the best way she knew how was to make me Luna of a powerful pack. A pack she thought would keep me safe.”

They kept arguing. From my end, I could tell that Derek still had not gotten past his marriage with Eliza. He couldn't let go of the past. That was obvious.

“It wasn’t that simple—” Derek said again.

“It was,” Eliza cut him off, “You made a choice. And now you have to live with it.”

I pushed the doors open

THIRD PERSON’S POVThe gates of the Silver Moon Pack opened slowly as Derek stepped through. The guards bowed their heads, blaring the trumpets to announce the arrival of the Alpha back into the pack. The council members bowed their heads and greeted him as well.Derek wasn’t bothered by any of this. in fact, everything seemed like background noise to him.His arms were full—he was carrying Maya who was extremely weak and exhausted. She was bruised and her skin still looked scraped from battle. The sight of her like this twisted something deep in Derek’s chest. He didn’t stop to explain. He just walked straight into the palace, ignoring the wide eyes and whispers of the guards. But as soon as they entered the main hall, a sharp voice rang out.“Derek Wolfe!”Diana, his mother, stood at the top of the staircase. She looked furious. Her heels clicked sharply as she ca

ELIZA’S POVThe ball went on around us. The lights from the chandeliers shone like a thousand stars in the night sky. Music hummed in the background as nobles in dazzling gowns and military uniforms danced and toasted to victory. But I stood still. My eyes were on Alexander, who stood beside me.He looked devastatingly handsome tonight in his suit. His black hair was swept back and his medals reflected in the light. He looked every bit the war hero the kingdom revered—and the man I loved.I clutched the wine glass in my hand a little tighter. My heart pounded against my ribs because I knew what would happen next.Alexander would kneel and propose tonight. And if I accepted—if I said yes to the man who had risked his life for me, who had fought beside me, loved me fiercely, who knew me better than anyone—then my pack would no longer be mine.Tradition dictated that the woman’s title and land passed to her husband upon marriage. The very thought of surrendering the legacy my father left

ALEXANDER'S POVThe journey back to the capital felt like it took forever, even though I had been looking forward to it.Every time we passed through a town, people would gather in the streets to cheer us on.They clapped, waved, shouted our names, and sang songs of victory. Their faces were full of happiness—not just for the win on the battlefield, but for everything that had been earned through pain, loss, and effort. But behind all the cheers and smiles, I could sense another reason for their joy.It wasn’t just the victory they were celebrating.Word of Maya’s betrayal had spread fast, even faster than I expected.I had hoped the rumors would die out before reaching too far, but instead, they had grown stronger in every town we passed.People talked about how she had failed, how she was captured, and how she tried to take others down with her in disgrace. The spies from the Western Plains had worked fast.Even though I had done everything I could to stop them, the damage had alrea

ELIZA'S POVThe sun was just starting to rise.I stood at the edge of the clearing, watching the soldiers of Simonton get ready to head back to the capital.Spring was finally here—the snow was melting, turning the ground into muddy patches, and the air smelled like wet earth. It had changed from the cold, winter air we’d been breathing for months. The soldiers looked lighter somehow—less worn out, more hopeful. They were ready to go home.I could hear Vivi’s voice nearby as she talked with the others about the trip. She and the rest—Boone, Rod and Cynthia—had given everything in this war. They were being called heroes now, though none of them seemed fully comfortable with the title.I crossed my arms, watching quietly. I knew Vivi meant well, but I also knew what came next.Rewards. Promotions. Power. And none of us wanted any of that.We didn’t fight to climb ranks or wear medals. We fought for each other. All they wanted now was peace and a chance to go home and heal.So I stepped

DEREK’S POVI stood before the small tent. It was strange, being here like this. I entered. The sound of her breathing was the only sound that filled the space. Maya lay on a cot. Her face was pale and her body was covered with bandages.Even with the bandages, I could see the injuries on her body. My stomach twisted in disgust as I walked closer. There was no denying it — Maya’s face showed she had been through a lot these past few days.Yet, my mind kept returning to the same thought: She had been responsible for the deaths of countless civilians, the same people I had once sworn to protect. And yet, I couldn't shake the responsibility I still felt, because of the bond that tethered us. The mate bond that, no matter how twisted, still tied me to her.I couldn’t just leave her like this.I knew the others would expect her wounds to be cleaned, to be properly cared for. And so, I moved to the nearby table, grabbing some bandages and ointment. My hands trembled slightly, and I hated it

ELIZA’S POVI didn’t wait for Derek. I couldn’t.The weight in my chest was too heavy and the ache in my heart felt too loud. I needed to move, to walk off the edge of that battlefield and feel something else. So, I went down the mountain alone. The cold wind bit at my face as I descended. The camp came into view below.I could see the tents glowing softly with lamplight. Soldiers scattered in small groups, some laughing, others silent. The air was thick with victory and exhaustion.I walked past them all, ignoring the congratulations, the questions, the praise. I had nothing left to give.I found Alexander in the command tent, standing over the war table.Maps were spread across it, papers scattered. I could tell it was one of those stressful nights again. He looked up the second I stepped inside.“Eliza,” he said with a small smile. His eyes locked with mine, and something passed between us—something that made my wolf stir in my chest. Something that pulled me to him in a way I coul

ELIZA’S POVAlexander’s mind-link had come through mere moments ago. He told me that Victor wanted a private conversation. It wasn’t a request I’d find unusual, but it still had the power to tighten the knot in my stomach.I wasn’t surprised, not really. I’d expected something like this. But as always, it was the quiet moments, the ones in between the decisions and the battles, that were the hardest.I didn’t want to face Victor, not really, not after everything that had happened. But I would.I would, because I knew there were truths that still needed to be laid bare, and if there was any chance at peace, at even the smallest bit of reconciliation, it started with confronting what we couldn’t change.“Derek,” I said, turning to him as he stood beside me.“Yes, Eliza?”“I need you to come with me,” I said.I wanted Derek to come with me as my escort because I knew Derek needed to witness certain things with his own eyes to truly understand the truth. He didn’t question me. He simply n

ELIZA'S POVWhen Alexander publicly declared me as his mate in front of the entire military camp, I felt relieved. The heavy weight that had hung around my heart, the constant need for secrecy, lifted in an instant.I no longer had to hide the fact that Alexander was mine—or rather, that I was his. I could feel my wolf rejoicing at the idea of staying by his side, knowing that we no longer needed to hide. But that was the thing about war—it had a way of shattering moments of joy.The aftermath demanded all our energy.Supplies needed distributing, the wounded required immediate treatment, and the battlefield itself, littered with the remnants of chaos, needed clearing. There was no time for anything but duty. And so, even with the excitement of having my bond with Alexander publicly acknowledged, the hours drifted by, and I found myself buried under responsibilities.Alexander and I barely saw each other. Our meetings were reduced to quick moments, stolen conversations between duties,

THIRD PERSON’S POVMaya slowly regained consciousness. She felt a deep pain in her skull. Her muscles screamed in protest as she tried to move, but she was bound tightly to a chair. She could feel every bruise, every gash on her body.It took her a moment to gather her bearings, to process where she was.Her heart skipped as she lifted her eyes to the figure standing across from her.Victor. The Western Plains commander. He stood tall and proud. He was studying her with his arms crossed and a cruel smile playing on his lips. His eyes, cold and calculating, were filled with amusement. It was clear that he wasn’t concerned with her pain. No, he loved every moment of it."Ah, you're awake," he said in a mocking tone "I was beginning to think you might not survive the night."Maya’s breath caught in her throat. She bit back the urge to retort. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction.Instead, she gathered what little strength she had left and forced herself to speak.“The treaty…” she gasp
