33. Denial

Zara's POV

I have made many questionable decisions in my life.

I once trusted Victor Black with my future, which should probably have been enough evidence that my judgement cannot always be relied upon. I married Damon Veyron under circumstances that still sound ridiculous when I think about them for too long, and somewhere along the way, I apparently developed the habit of arguing with men who are significantly larger than me and considerably more dangerous than common sense would recommend.

Zara's POVI have made many questionable decisions in my life.I once trusted Victor Black with my future, which should probably have been enough evidence that my judgement cannot always be relied upon. I married Damon Veyron under circumstances that still sound ridiculous when I think about them for too long, and somewhere along the way, I apparently developed the habit of arguing with men who are significantly larger than me and considerably more dangerous than common sense would recommend. But kissing my husband because we were standing too close to each other after an argument? That has to be somewhere near the top of the list.I pull away from Damon so quickly that I nearly lose my balance. For a moment, neither of us says anything. The silence between us is unbearable. Not because Damon looks angry. That would have been easier. Not because he looks amused, either, although I would have happily strangled him if he had smiled. He simply stands there looking at me.And somehow, tha

  • The Biker King's Black Widow    32. The First Kiss

Zara's POVBy the time evening settles over the house, I have managed to convince myself that I am not thinking about Victor Black. This is a complete lie.I am thinking about Victor Black, Gideon, Westbridge, my father's business dealings, and the rather unpleasant possibility that my former fiancé may have been standing beside my father long before either of them admitted it to me.The worst part is that I can't decide which betrayal irritates me more. The possibility that Victor knew far more about my family than he ever admitted, or the possibility that my father had known exactly what Victor was involved in and had still encouraged me to marry him.Neither option makes me particularly eager to start forgiving people.I sit in the kitchen with a glass of water in front of me that I haven't touched, staring out of the window while the house grows quieter around me. Damon had disappeared into his office after dinner to speak to Rocco, leaving me alone with my thoughts.Frankly, I wo

  • The Biker King's Black Widow    31. The Man Behind the Warning

Zara's POVI have always believed that a person can learn a great deal about someone by watching how they react when things stop going their way. My father, for example, becomes quieter when he's angry, my mother develops an impressive talent for pretending she hasn't heard anything unpleasant, and Arabella usually finds someone else to blame before she's even finished processing what went wrong.Victor, on the other hand, has always been rather good at pretending everything is under control. It's one of the reasons I once believed I could spend my life with him. That particular mistake has been expensive.I'm sitting in Damon's office when Rocco's latest message arrives. Damon has been reviewing the information from the previous day, and although he hasn't said much, I can tell he's waiting for something specific. His phone vibrates against the desk, and he picks it up, reading the message before opening the attached document."What is it?" I ask.He turns the screen toward me."Rocc

  • The Biker King's Black Widow    30. The Name on the Document

Zara's POVBy the time Damon pulls away from the Devereaux estate, I have decided that my family needs a therapist, a priest, and possibly an exorcist, although I'm not entirely convinced any of them would agree to take the case once they learned the full extent of the damage. My father is hiding something, my mother would rather swallow glass than tell me the truth about our past, and Arabella seems to have made it her personal mission to convince me that my marriage is doomed, as though she hasn't already contributed enough chaos to my life to qualify for her own criminal investigation. And then there's my husband. The man currently driving beside me with one hand on the steering wheel and that infuriatingly composed expression on his face, as though he hasn't managed to turn my entire world upside down in the space of a few weeks.I glance at him. He's handsome. Annoyingly so, actually. The sort of handsome that ought to come with a warning label and a disclaimer about possible emo

  • The Biker King's Black Widow    29. Arabella's Jealousy

Zara’s POVBy the time we arrive at the Devereaux estate, I have already spent the entire drive reminding myself that returning Theo to this house is the right thing to do, even if every instinct I possess is telling me to turn the car around and take him somewhere his grandfather cannot frighten him into silence.Theo is sitting in the back seat with his wooden car clutched in both hands, his little legs swinging above the floor mat as he hums to himself. Damon has barely spoken since we left the house, although I have caught him looking at me more than once, and each time I have found something particularly fascinating outside my window to occupy my attention. It has absolutely nothing to do with what happened between us last night.Nothing at all.The fact that I can still remember how close his hand came to mine, how his gaze dropped to my mouth, or how badly I wanted him to close the distance between us is an unfortunate inconvenience that I intend to ignore until it disappears.

  • The Biker King's Black Widow    28. Almost

Zara's POV Damon's fingers close around mine, and for a moment, neither of us seems quite sure what to do about it.I could pull away. I probably should, considering this is the same man who has spent the better part of our marriage making me question whether strangling my husband would count as a legitimate reason for divorce. Yet his hand is warm around mine, his thumb resting against my knuckles, and I find myself sitting there longer than I intended, looking at him instead of coming up with an insult to put an end to the moment. His grey eyes remain on my face, quieter than usual, and without the familiar smirk that normally tells me he's about to say something irritating. It's unsettling.I'd much rather deal with the Damon who argues with me over everything from what time we leave the house to whether I should tell him where I'm going. That man is predictable. I know how to handle him, and I know exactly which buttons to press when he becomes too pleased with himself. This vers
