Chapter sixty-five

Third person pov

The hideout smelled the same as it always did, old wood, cigarette smoke that had soaked into the walls years before anyone currently standing in the room had arrived, and beneath it, faintly, the metallic tang of the whiskey bottle sitting open on the table.

A woman stepped inside, pushing through the door without knocking.

Mrs. Hernandez.

The two men stationed near the window straightened instantly at the sight of her, exchanging a glance before quietly e

  • The Billionaire Doctor's Unwilling Wife    The bracelet

Chapter Sixty-SevenSethThe door clicked shut behind Daniel, and I stared at it, running through everything he'd just laid out.Stolen trailer. No driver. Cameras that had somehow missed the one thing they were supposed to catch. Someone had taken the time to wipe the vehicle down before walking away from it.Another reason added to the many reasons, that this wasn't an accident. It was a message, a proof that whoever wanted me alive enough to leave a mark could reach me whenever they wanted.I shifted against the pillows and the pain pulled sharp across my ribs."Don't." Emily, sharp, already on her feet."Don't what?""Move like that.""You're giving me orders now?" I teased, squinting my eyes at her."Yes." Of course, she'd remain unmoved. "Interesting."She crossed her arms. "You were in a coma for eleven days.""I noticed." I rolled my eyes. Why stating the obvious over and over again!"Then act like it."Something about her tonight sat differently than before. The same guarded

Chapter Sixty-SixEmilyI didn't sleep that night.Every time I closed my eyes, the same events played. Seth on the gurney. The machines. The bruise blooming purple-black across his cheekbone. Eleven days of a heart monitor telling me he was alive, because his face never did.I sat by the window, watching the city smear into darkness through the glass, and didn't bother wiping my eyes.Behind me, Seth slept. The doctor had told him to rest, and he hadn't argued…which scared me more than anything the doctor had said.Asleep, he looked smaller. Less like a man who could silence a boardroom without raising his voice. The cut over his eyebrow had scabbed dark. His arm sat braced against his side, careful even in unconsciousness.Eleven days I'd watched those injuries settle into him. Seeing him breathing shouldn't have made my chest hurt worse. But it did … because now I knew exactly what I'd almost lost.My husband. The word still didn't fit right in my mouth. Tonight, though, it sat dif

Mrs. Hernandez. The two men stationed near the window straightened instantly at the sight of her, exchanging a glance before quietly excusing themselves, murmuring something about checking the perimeter. Neither of them wanted to be in the room for what was coming. They knew her too well for that.Don didn't look up from the papers spread across the table."You could knock.""He survived, Don."That got his attention. He set the papers down slowly, deliberately, the kind of calm that had always unsettled her more than shouting ever could."I heard.""You heard." Her voice cracked on the second word, and she hated herself for i

Chapter sixty-fourSethConsciousness came back in pieces, first sound, muffled and distant, then light, harsh even through closed eyelids, then pain, a dull, full-body ache that told me exactly how much time my body had lost before my mind had even caught up to where I was.The steady beep beside me confirmed it before I opened my eyes.Hospital.I forced my eyes open, blinking against the brightness, and it took several seconds for the ceiling above me to resolve into something my brain could process. White tiles. A monitor. An IV line taped to the back of my hand, the skin around it faintly bruised, the kind of bruising that came from days of use, not hours.Days.Something in the back of my mind told me it had been longer than a night. And warmth.Something warm was wrapped around my fingers.I turned my head, slowly, every movement costing more effort than it should have, and found her.Emily.She was asleep in the chair beside my bed, her upper body folded forward against the ma

  • The Billionaire Doctor's Unwilling Wife    Eleven days with him

Chapter sixty-threeEmilyDay three of Seth being admitted, I stopped going home entirely.Xena brought me a change of clothes and didn't argue about it, just set the bag down beside the chair I'd claimed as mine and squeezed my shoulder before leaving again to cover for me at the hospital I was supposed to be running.I barely registered the days passing. They blurred into one long stretch of monitors beeping, nurses checking vitals, and Seth's chest rising and falling beneath a sheet, steady, mechanical, alive but absent.I held his hand more than I let myself think about.Daniel found me there on the fifth day, dark circles under his own eyes that mirrored mine."You should eat something," he said, setting a paper bag on the table beside me. I didn't touch it."Tell me you have news." I said instead. He hesitated, glancing at the door before pulling the visitor chair closer and lowering his voice. "The specialist finished the report on the brakes."My whole body went still. "And?"

Chapter sixty-twoEmily"How is he?"The doctor's eyes flicked briefly toward the small crowd gathered behind me, Mr. Hernandez, Daniel, Xena, all of them holding their breath the same way I was, before settling back on me."He's stable. For now." He exhaled, the kind of exhale that told me he'd been holding it since he walked through those doors. "Multiple fractures, a collapsed lung we managed to re-inflate, and significant blood loss from a laceration along his side. We've stopped the bleeding and he's being moved to the ICU.""Will he wake up?""We won't know the extent of everything until he's more stable. Head trauma is always the hardest to predict." He paused, softening, professional distance cracking just slightly. "But he's fighting. I've worked with Dr. Seth for three years. If anyone can pull through this, it's him."Relief and terror hit me in the same breath, so tangled together I couldn't tell which one made my knees buckle. Xena caught my arm before I hit the floor a s
