Claire.

The man who said “Let her go” was Victor.

I froze. My heart stopped for a second. I hadn’t seen him since that day he told me to disappear. Now he was standing here. “Uncle Victor…”

The loan shark let go of my arm and turned. “Who the hell are you?”

Victor pulled out his phone. “I’m calling the police.”

He started dialling. One of the men moved fast. He grabbed the heavy metal plaque from the counter and swung it hard at Victor’s head.

I screamed.

Victor’s phone fell from his hand and hit the floor with a loud crack. He fell, too. Blood poured out from the side of his head.

One of the men screamed, “Boss, that’s Victor Cavendish! You just killed him!”

The men got scared. They ran out fast, leaving the door swinging behind them.

Dad and I rushed to Victor at the same time. I dropped to my knees and lifted his head carefully. There was so much blood. My hands were shaking. Dad was already on the phone calling 911.

“Victor… please wake up,” I whispered. “Please.”

I remembered something then. Victor and Bonnie had only gone to one hospital. Doctor Richard had been the one treating Victor’s headaches and his condition, too. I knew the hospital.

“Dad, call an ambulance but tell them to take him to The Oasis private hospital. Victor has a condition, and only Doctor Richard knows his case.”

Dad looked at me while he was on the phone. “How do you know all that?”

I shook my head. “This is not the time for that. I know the hospital. That’s what matters.”

Dad looked at me for a moment longer. Then he nodded and spoke into the phone. "The Oasis Private Hospital. Yes. We have a head injury. Severe bleeding."

I held Victor’s head in my lap and begged him. “I stayed away, just like you wanted. Why did you come here? Why on a day like this? I already have Bonnie’s guilt. I can’t add this one, too. Please wake up…”

The ambulance came fast. They carried Victor in. Dad and I followed in our car. The whole ride I kept thinking about how this was my fault again. Another person I cared about hurt because of me.

At the hospital, they took him straight to surgery. Dad and I waited in the hallway. I called Victor’s office and told them what had happened. Tyler arrived shortly running out of breathe and his face was so pale.

"What happened?" he asked. "Is he okay? Where is he?"

I told him everything. The loan sharks, the head injury, and the ongoing surgery. When I was done, he sat down and put his head in his hands.

We waited for hours and i couldn’t sit still. I kept walking up and down the hall. Dad tried to calm me down, but I was too scared.

Tyler watched me. "Claire, you need to relax.

I know Victor. He'll pull through. Since we were kids, I've always known him to be a tough one."

I kept pacing.

"He's going to be fine," Tyler said. "Sit down while I go get you some water."

I nodded. "Okay."

Tyler stood up and walked away.

I sat down next to Dad. My legs were shaking.

"Claire," Dad said. "You need to breathe."

I tried. I really tried.

Then the doctor came out. "He's awake," he said. "You can see him now."

I stood up. Dad stood up. Tyler was still gone. It was just us.

I was so scared that Victor would scream at me to get out. The last time I saw Victor, he had told me he hated me. I could still remember the rage in his eyes that day.

What if he did it again? What if he screamed at me in the hospital room? Dad put a hand on my shoulder. "Come on," he said softly. "He's waiting."

I walked slowly down the hallway and finally stood in the doorway. Victor was sitting up in the bed with a bandage around his head. He looked tired, but his eyes were open

I waited for the screaming and the rage. I waited for him to tell me to get out. But It didn't come. Victor looked at me. Then he looked at Dad. Then he looked at the doctor.

"Who is she?" Victor asked.

I blinked. "What?" His eyes searched my face, but there was nothing there. No recognition. No anger. No hate. Just... nothing. I couldn’t understand. “You don’t remember me?”

The doctor stepped in. He spoke gently. “Mr. Cavendish is suffering from trauma-induced dissociative amnesia, made worse by a pre-existing condition we’ve been treating him for since his sister’s death five years ago. The extreme emotional pain from that loss caused his brain to suppress certain memories as a protective mechanism. The head injury from the accident has triggered a more severe dissociative episode. Right now, his mind seems to have shut out the painful parts of his past. We don't know how much he'll remember or when those memories will return. We can’t force it. The brain protects itself from what it finds too painful to remember.”

I felt like the floor had dropped out from under me. Victor had lost his memories. He doesn't know who I was. He doesn't remember the hate. He doesn't remember Bonnie’s death.

The doctor smiled at me. “I figured you are his girlfriend because earlier today, I called to make sure he was taking his medications as prescribed, and he told me he was proposing today.”

“Girlfriend?” I blinked.

Victor.Five years, and Bonnie’s room at home is still empty. Some mornings, I woke up expecting to hear music blaring from her room. Then reality hit. She wasn’t here anymore. The headaches never really left. Sometimes dizziness came with it, or moments where my mind went foggy and I forgot things I should remember. The strong meds helped, but they didn’t fix everything. I still felt responsible. If I had been stricter, if I had protected her better, maybe she would still be here.I sat in my office staring out at the city. This building, this company — it was my father’s legacy. I had taken it and made it bigger than he ever dreamed. I had changed the world. But Dad wasn’t here to see it. Mom wasn’t. And the one that hurt most was Bonnie.I rubbed my temple and tried to push the thoughts away. Today wasn’t the day for that. Today, I was going to propose to Jasmine.I looked at the ring on my desk. It sparkled under the light. She lived in Amsterdam for her job as a senior investment

Victor looked shocked. “What?” His hand fell from his cheek.“Why didn’t you change the lock code? You knew I had it. If you didn’t want me to come here, you could have just changed the code. Why didn’t you change it?”For a moment, Victor went quiet. Then he shook it off. “I’m doing that right away. I’m going to change the code.”Then he ran his hand through his hair. Then he looked at me and said, “Please, Claire.”I looked at him.“Please leave me alone,” he begged through his rage. “I hate you so much that I wish you would just disappear. Please. Just disappear.”I looked into his eyes, and in that moment, I realised how much Victor truly hated me.My body started shaking. I started having hiccups. I couldn’t stop them. The tears that rolled down my cheeks were hot.“I’ll disappear,” I managed to say. “If that’s what you really want. I promise. You’ll never see me again.”I had really made my decision, and then I turned and walked out the door. One quiet step after another step.…

Claire, let’s go home,” Dad said softly.I shook my head. “I won’t go. It’s Bonnie’s funeral. How could I just leave?”The rain soaked my black dress and ran down my face. Dad looked tired and sick, but he stayed right next to me.“Even if it’s outside in the rain, I’ll wait. I have to be here for her.”Dad didn’t argue. He just put his arm around me. “If you’re staying, then I’m staying.”I smiled a little through the tears. He was always like that. We stood there shivering together. When it was over, people started coming out. I saw Victor first. He looked broken in his black suit. Tyler walked next to him, holding an umbrella over his head. Victor took off his dark shades, and his eyes met mine. They were so cold it felt like they could shoot right through me. I stepped back.Victor stopped. “What are you still doing here?”Tyler put a hand on his arm. “Victor, calm down. Claire is grieving too. She lost her best friend.”Victor’s voice was hard. “More like she killed her best frie

There was a collision. I heard glasses shattering. Then everything went black for a second. When I opened my eyes, my head was pounding. I called 911 immediately. Then, I stumbled out of the wrecked car and ran to the driver’s side.“Bonnie!” I screamed, pulling her out as gently as I could. I dropped to the ground with her in my arms. There was blood everywhere on her dress and my hands. “Bonnie, wake up! Please!”Her eyes fluttered open. She was breathing so shallowly. Her hand weakly grabbed mine.“Claire…” she whispered. “Promise me. Victor can never know about the type of girl I was behind his back. Don't tell him about the pregnancy… or about Sly. No matter what happens. Please…”Tears poured down my face. “You’re going to be okay. The ambulance is coming. Just hold on. I love you, Bonnie. Stay with me—”Her hand went limp. The sirens were getting closer, but they felt so far away....At the hospital, everything moved too fast. Paramedics rushed Bonnie through the doors on a st

Victor’s in Amsterdam for two whole weeks,” Bonnie said with a big grin as we moved through the crowded warehouse party. “No big brother watching us. We’re finally free, Claire.”I smiled, but inside, I felt a rush of relief. Victor Cavendish was twenty-nine — ten years older than me and Bonnie, who were both nineteen. I had called him Uncle Victor for years, even though he wasn’t related to me. He was much older, cold, and handsome in a way that made my stomach flip. Intense grey eyes, deep voice that makes me quiet whenever he is speaking. He hated me because he thought I was a bad influence on his sister. But no matter how much he glared at me or tried to keep us apart, I couldn’t stop liking him. I’ve been crushing on Victor for years, but he saw me as trash.Bonnie danced in front of me, laughing, her curls bouncing under the flashing lights. She looked so alive. She came from a wealthy family and a big house. I came from a small apartment with my dad, who worked tirelessly just
