MasukThe cold floor of the detention cell bit into Lydia's bare skin. She didn't expect that her engagement night would end in a police precinct while being accused of murder.
But reality was far crueler than any joke.
The first rays of dawn slipped through the narrow barred window, offering little comfort. Outside the cell, three detectives were already waiting.
"Morning, Miss Sinclair," one of them greeted with mock politeness.
Lydia's stomach twisted.
The moment the cell door opened, the two officers on either side of her took hold of her arms and escorted her toward the interrogation room.
* * *
"I already told you everything!" she snapped, jerking her arm free. Her voice cracked from exhaustion. "I didn't kill anyone. I have nothing else to say."
The detectives remained unmoved.
"You can speak to my lawyer," she continued. "I'm done answering questions."
The officers exchanged a glance.
She understood neither of them believed her.
And honestly?
Looking at the evidence they had shown her last night, Lydia almost understood why as she was left stunned by it.
"Mom..."
The sight waiting for her inside stole the air from her lungs.
Amira Sinclair was already seated behind the glass partition.
Amira's eyes were swollen and bloodshot. She looked like she hadn't slept all night. She was clutched in by Natasha.
"Lydia?" Amira's voice trembled.
She rushed forward until her palms hit the glass.
"Mom, please. You have to believe me."
Her voice came out weaker than intended.
"I didn't do this."
Amira stared at her silently
"These evidence..." Lydia swallowed hard. "It's fake. Someone is setting me up."
Nobody responded.
Lydia's gaze shifted toward her sister.Natasha looked devastated,Perfectly devastated. Her eyes were red. Her expression was filled with concern.Like some saint who wouldn't do what she was caught doing hours back.
"Sis..." Natasha whispered. "What happened?"
The question nearly made Lydia laugh.
What happened?
'You tell me.'
"You know me," Lydia said flatly."You know I could never kill someone."
Natasha lowered her gaze.
The officers just had to set up a wide screen in the room .There, the footage was playing live.Thorne Gerald and Lydia were clutched together in a way that suggested brute romantic intimacy but Lydia knew the truth.
"He tried to force himself on me," she said immediately.
"The footage is only showing a particular angle, see?!"
The detective folded his arms.
"That's the only footage available."
Lydia stared at the screen in disbelief.
The camera angle had somehow removed every sign of struggle.
" This is all a misunderstanding?"
Atleast that was what she thought initially before seeing the corrugated evidences. It was far from a mere misunderstanding and it seems she wouldn't be getting out of this easily.
The detective allowed them physical space.
"Lydia..."
Amira's voice trembled.
She looked exhausted, as though she had aged years overnight.
"Lydia, look at everything in front of you."
Her mother gestured weakly toward the stack of documents on the table.
"The fingerprints. The messages. A witness. Your DNA." Her voice wavered. "Even your movements were tracked."
Lydia's throat tightened.
"The lawyers have been working all night," Amira continued. "Your brother is still trying to find a way to help you. Natasha has been trying too."
Natasha lowered her head at the mention of her name, looking every bit the concerned sister.
"But the evidence..." Amira whispered. "It's overwhelming."
Then her mother looked straight into her eyes.
"Just tell me the truth."
Lydia's heart sank.
"Mom..."
"Please."
"Did you do it?"
"No!"
The answer exploded from Lydia before she could stop herself.
"I didn't!"
Amira flinched.
Yet something in her eyes remained unchanged. It was obvious she doubted her which made Lydia's heart ached.
How many trust issues must she face in a row?
Lydia stared at her mother in disbelief.Even now she still didn't believe her.
She couldn't hold it in anymore. She snapped. "Fine."
Her laugh came out hollow. "You know what, Mom? Just leave."
"Lydia—"
"No."
She shook her head. "I'm tired."
Tears burned behind her eyes.
"I'm tired of explaining myself and I'm tired of nobody believing me."
Her chest rose and fell unevenly.
"You probably care more about the Harold alliance than you do about me.I have my money.I have my means.I only needed you for support anyway."
The words spilled out before she could stop them.
"You never trusted me.You never listened to me."
"Not then. Not now."
For a moment, the room froze.
Then—
SLAP.
The impact echoed through the interrogation room.Lydia's head snapped sideways.Pain bloomed across her cheek.
The world seemed to tilt.
Slowly, she turned back with her gaze meeting her mother's.Amira was shaking.
Whether from anger, grief, or disappointment, Lydia couldn't tell.
"You ungrateful child."
Her mother's voice trembled. "It's my fault."
A tear rolled down Amira's cheek.
"It's my fault you became someone I can no longer recognize."
The words struck harder than the slap.
Amira stood.
Without another glance, she turned and walked away.
Lydia froze. She watched hoping she would stop.Amira didn't.
Then Natasha stood up and paused before following.
The two sisters looked at each other even through the glass. For a brief second, Lydia thought she saw something flash across Natasha's face.
Natasha sighed softly and turned away.
"Lydia..." Natasha said, her voice breaking. The moment Lydia assured everyone the spill had already been cleaned and there was nothing to worry about, Joy quietly returned to her station.Natasha, however, didn't give Lydia the chance to say a single word."Because of you, Isaac is lying in the hospital.""He almost lost his life!"What?Lydia unconsciously held her breath.No...It couldn't be.She had tried so hard to bury that possibility the moment Isaac's location had led her to a hospital. The first emotion Lydia felt upon seeing Natasha had been disgust. The sister who had faked sympathy for her was now standing there in a figure-hugging outfit that revealed her long, slender legs.So unlike the Natasha she knew. The Natasha who had always been strict.Conservative.Almost obsessively obsessed with decency. It was as though she had transformed overnight.More beautiful.More confident.More... liberated. It made Lydia feel strangely small. It was as if a thin veil had finally be
In no time, the car pulled into the executive parking lot of Infinite Sky Tech.Ivy turned off the ignition, and silence settled inside the vehicle."We're here, Ms. Sinclair. The private elevator is clear."Lydia tightened her grip on her purse, her eyes fixed above the edge of her mask."Good.""I'd like to see exactly what we're dealing with....But before that... I want to walk through the first floor."With a firm push, she opened the car door and stepped out, ready to begin the day by facing whatever awaited her.The bustling reception lobby of Infinite Sky Tech was graced by her presence. At her left, Ivy walked with a straight posture and a stern expression. It wasn't a mistake, Lydia thought.Ivy was deliberately wearing a colder expression than usual today.Well...It certainly got the message across.Beneath her face mask, Lydia's breathing remained steady. The piercing gazes following her from every direction, however, were anything but normal. With most of her face concealed,
When Adrian—whatever he was, and whatever game he was playing—still hadn't shown up, Lydia's patience finally began to wear thin. She had dialed Isaac's number countless times.A hundred would have been an understatement. Each unanswered ring felt like another drop of ice water sliding down her spine. What if he had abandoned her?The thought clawed at the back of her mind.No.She forced it away. She wouldn't doubt him.Not after he told her he believed her.He said he was coming. He had to.Yet her feet were left on icy groundsHis last known location refused to make any sense.Ahospital.She tried to convince herself there had to be an emergency.Something urgent must have happened.Nothing bad happened to him. He's fine. She repeated the words like a mantra, though her chest continued to tighten.Fortunately, she wasn't entirely defenseless. She still held two trump cards.Adrian.And Henry. The two men would surely be useful as it is.Surprisingly, a narcissist like Henry hadn't recoiled
"Special? What do you mean by that?" Lydia asked. She locked her jaw, refusing to open her mouth for the spoon Miriam was holding out.It didn't look like the nanny intended to tell her anything.Realizing she wasn't going to get an answer, Lydia took matters into her own hands. She grabbed the bowl from the tray, lifted it to her lips, and gulped the soup down in one go."It's terrible. I really don't like soup," Lydia grumbled, setting the empty bowl down.Miriam didn't argue. She simply prepared the medicine the doctor had prescribed before reaching over to gently wipe Lydia's mouth."He never lets just anyone into this room," Miriam murmured."Well... he cleans this place himself."Lydia froze. That was quite the information dump. She stared at Miriam for a long moment before slowly nodding, piecing together what the older woman meant. No wonder the Harolds had reacted so strongly. All because Adrian had ordered this room to be prepared... for her."Why?"The nanny was already gone by t
"...I'm speeding down the highway as we speak. I'll be there before you know it..."Isaac paused for a heartbeat."Lydia, I believe you."Hearing those four words was enough to convince her that her life hadn't completely collapsed overnight.Right on cue, a sharp knock landed against the door. She expected it to be Adrian. Perhaps he had finished dealing with his urgent matter and was returning to explain the situation, just as he had promised earlier."Come in."The door clicked open.It wasn't Adrian standing in the doorway, but the kind-faced nanny from before. The older woman stepped inside carrying a silver tray with a steaming bowl of soup."Young lady, here we are. You must still be exhausted. Have some warm soup," she said, offering a warm smile. Her kindness stood in stark contrast to the permanent frowns that seemed to plague the rest of the Harold family.Looking at her gentle expression, Lydia wondered if this woman might be willing to answer some of her questions."Thank
Henry sneered down at her, his eyes wild."But there's no need to fret. It just suggests that we fit each other perfectly, don't you think?"Lydia frantically pry at his grip, twisting just to break free from his painful grasp. He was insane."You're mine, young lady," Henry hissed. "And nobody is taking you away from me."Oh, no.Please, not another nightmare added to her plate."You're a bitch, and I'm scum," Henry whispered against her ear. "Perfect match. Happily ever after."To her horror, not a single servant happened to be nearby.Realizing Lydia had no intention of playing the submissive, apologetic girlfriend, the scumbag slammed his free hand over her mouth. Even if she screamed, every sound would be smothered against his palm."Have you forgotten?" Henry hissed, pinning her back. "We're already engaged. And whatsoever happened at the frmal party yesterday didn't change a thing."Lydia thrashed against him, using every ounce of her remaining strength to bite down hard on his h
