LOGINChase’s POVThat wasn’t what I was expecting from Carmen at all, especially with the way she said it.“Right here and now?” I asked.“Yes,” she responded.Carmen went ahead to cross her hands around her chest, indicating that she wasn’t joking around. Again, there was something different about this Carmen Vega that had returned to work for me, but I just couldn’t place it.“I thought we were going to treat my swollen ankle first,” I said.“Yes, we will, but I am not going anywhere with you if we don’t get some things straightened out,” she responded.Oh well, we might as well get on with it.Carmen already thinks that there is something going on between Tiana and I, and I recalled trying to correct that impression, but she hadn’t let me, so maybe this was the chance I had. I was already disappointed and dejected that I would have to try so hard to convince a whole lot of people about the situation with Tiana.Beginning with my manager seemed like a pretty perfect start.“Alright then
Chase’s POVThe training began in earnest, but Sean Noble, even though a terrible player, decided to make everything unbearable for me.He was on the other team; for effective training, the team had to be split in two, and he happened to be on the other small team.Sean Noble took every opportunity he had to hit me with the stick. The first time seemed like a mistake, which I let slide even though he didn’t offer an apology. The second time had hit harder, almost getting to my knee even though I had my helmet on, and that was when I realized that he was doing it intentionally.I tried to avoid him, but it was almost impossible. The third time, he came for my ankle, and I could barely contain the pain.“Fuck!” I groaned in pain as I staggered to the ground. The initial two strikes had been hurtful, but I was able to contain the pain. However, it seemed as though Sean Noble wanted me to feel the pain well enough.“What happened?” Roger James asked.“Sean Noble obviously hit him!” Benja
Chase’s POVWe were already warming up for training, but I noticed that the only person who was late was Sean Noble.Roger James and Philip Trust were present, as always, but they never said anything about his nonchalance and negligence.“Welcome back, Chase,” Benjamin said. The other players were still keeping their distance and acting hostile, and ironically, only Benjamin, whose best friend was in jail because of me, started to come close. Anyway, I didn’t even have that luxury of time to worry about who was friendly or not. They couldn’t stop me from performing well, and that was all that mattered.“Thanks, Benjamin,” I responded.“Here he comes; the perpetual latecomer,” Benjamin said, gesturing towards Sean Noble’s direction.I looked and saw that Sean Noble was indeed making his way to us, but he was more or like strolling down. He was taking his damn time while everyone, including the officials, waited for him. This was ridiculous and annoying, and I could barely stand it.“He
Carmen’s POVI arrived at Tiana’s office as early as possible, and almost at the same time that she was just getting to her office.“You didn’t get some sleep?” Tiana asked with irritation.I stared at her and her choice of outfit. Since I started working for Chase again, I noticed that she had been dressing as though she was going for pageantry. She would have worked better with Lori, my stepmother, who was a model, and not as a head referee. And I wondered how she could be so comfortable in a six-inch heel all day.I wouldn’t even survive in a four.“I did,” I responded, trying to tear my eyes away from Tiana and to stop thinking of the fact that she was actually alluring. Now I could understand why Chase could go for a woman like her and not someone like me who always wore baggy and loose-fitting clothes. She was the kind of partner a famous man would show to the world with pride.“Then why are you here so early?” She asked me, clearly displeased to be seeing me.Well, I wasn’t pl
Carmen’s POVChase knew something that he was hiding from me.That was the thought in my head as I made my way back to my apartment, and I was so certain about this that I couldn’t shake it off.My instincts were hardly ever wrong.I stopped bombarding Chase with questions and left him because I figured that with him, I wouldn’t be able to get the answers that I needed. I realized that he was prepared to argue with me all night rather than be honest with me.I wasn’t concerned about his eyes before now because just as Jonathan Price had instructed, it was Chase’s private life, and as long as I wasn’t put off by it, it was okay. As a matter of fact, I thought that it was unique and cute.Until I saw that young boy, and something in me knew that there ought to be something there that Chase wasn’t telling. As much as I wanted to turn a blind eye and just continue with my job, as it wasn’t any business of mine, I couldn’t. I was too much of a curious person to just act as though there was
Chase’s POVWhen Hace told me that Carmen had returned to the basement to ask some questions, and I had seen her in front of my door, I thought she was here to ask about the rent and grocery payment.Especially as Hace didn’t get to tell me how he handled it before she showed up. What I didn’t expect was the question that came out of her mouth.“Why would you ask me that?” I asked her.“I was at the basement some hours ago,” Carmen started.“Why?” I asked, almost too quickly.Almost too defensively.“That is not the bone of contention right now, Chase,” Carmen said. She was using that stern tone on me again, but this time around, I felt like a child being interrogated by his freaking teacher. Now it dawned on me why Carmen had been staring at me in a weird way since she got here. Not for once did I think that it would have anything to do with my eyes.“And while I was there,” Carmen continued. “A boy we didn’t see when we went there for charity walked into Hace’s office, and his eyes
