Chapter 97: Claire’s POV

I wake up to the sound of rain pattering on the bedroom window. It’s eeriness reminding me that today was the last day of my fearlessness. Charlotte would be out soon and her petition was still not granted. She would be free for at least another forty-eight hours meaning I would be in eminent danger for that time. I stare out the window and watch as the raindrops race to the bottom of the frame just like I had as a child.

I rub my belly as the boys seem active this morning and head to the kitchen for a snack. I’m surprised to see Nathan is up and sitting at the table working on what looks like a contract.

“Good morning.” I say softly as I approach.

“Hey, what are you doing up so early?” He says softly with a smile as he turns his attention to me.

“Just getting a snack. The boys are hungry again.” I didn’t feel the need to share my anxiety. Everyone was aware of what today would bring.
