Ariana's POV
The rest of the evening passed in a blur.
Between the orchestra's soft melodies and endless conversations time went by so fast Guests were drifting from one dance to another and Somewhere along the way, I had accepted a glass of champagne. Then another And another I wasn't drunk… But I definitely wasn't very sober either. A pleasant warmth spread through my body, making everything around me seem a little brighter. Even the ballroom, which had overwhelmed me when I first arrived, now felt strangely inviting. Lily… On the other hand, had disappeared at least five times to greet relatives, business partners And people whose names I couldn't possibly remember. I lost count of how many times she apologized for leaving me alone. "I promise" she would say before vanishing into another conversation, "this is the last one" It never was. So, with a half-empty champagne glass in hand, I wandered toward the quieter side of the ballroom, hoping to escape the crowd for a few minutes. I stumbled slightly as my heel got stuck at the edge of the stone tile but before I could fall, a strong hand gripped my waist, pulling me firmly against a hard chest. The scent of expensive cologne and tobacco wrapped around me instantly. I did not need to look up to know who it was. "Careful" Damien’s deep voice whispered near my ear. "The champagne here has a habit of sneaking up on people" "I'm fine" I lied, my voice breathy as I looked up at him. Well I wasn’t actually lying.... In the moonlight, his dark hair was slightly messy, and his piercing eyes were fixed entirely on me. His hand was warm against my bare back, sending ripples of heat through my body. And rhe way he looked at me made me suddenly aware of the lack of distance between us. "You ignored me inside" I said, looking up to him demanding an answer. A faint smile touched his lips. "I was doing you a favor, Ariana. If Vanessa or the press realized we’d already met tonight... they wouldn't have been kind." He leaned in a fraction closer, his gaze dropping to my lips. "But you shouldn't be out here with me. I'm not a good man." "Lily says you're just complicated," I whispered, emboldened by the alcohol running through my veins. "Lily doesn't know everything" he murmured. The space between us vanished as he groaned softly, his hand sliding up to cup the back of my neck, his thumb tilting my chin up. He moved his fingers gently across my bare back leaving shivers. Then he started kissing my neck and sucking on my skin. Oh I knew it was wrong but it felt so right..... My hands, acting on with a mind of their own, slid up the crisp fabric of his tuxedo, and I held onto his shoulders just to keep myself steady. When his lips finally met mine, all thoughts of Lily and college completely evaporated. The kiss was possessive, it was like a release of the tension that had been building between us since the dressing room. He pulled me deeper into the terrace, pressing my back against the cool stone wall with his body completely shielding me from the rest of the world. His tongue was parting my lips to claim my mouth fully. The contrast of the cold stone behind me and the intense heat of his body pressed against mine made my head spin. With his hand tangled into the loose strands of my hair, he was able to deepen the kiss until I was completely breathless. Every touch was stripping the thin layer of self control I was holding on to... making me aware of just how small I was compared to him and how easily he could undo me He pulled me close to his body and I could feel his hardness pressing tightly against my thigh through the thin layer of my gown. A quiet gasp escaped my lips, but he caught the sound, swallowing it with his mouth. Maybe it was the alcohol in my system, but everything feel louder and more intense. Every touch felt electric and my breathing became shallow. Damien’s large hand broke away from my hair and slid down to grip my hip tightly. He was holding me firmly against him. Completely dominating my space but not making me feel weak. I held onto the fabric of his tuxedo jacket with my fingers just to stay on my feet. He stopped kissing me for a second, his chest moving up and down heavily against mine. Damien's dark eyes looked straight into mine in the moonlight, and I could see a strong desire in it I was desiring him too "Ariana" he said, his voice rough and deep. "You need to go back inside" I knew he was right. But neither of us was moving. Even as he said those words, his fingers tightened around my hip. He pulled me hard against his length, doing the exact opposite of his warning. That exact movement made my head spin. "I don't think I can" I whispered back, completely overwhelmed by the sharp feeling of desire in my stomach. For one suspended moment, we simply stared at each other, both of us fully aware of how close we are to crossing a line neither of us could uncross. Then his gaze dropped briefly to my lips. That was all it took for his mouth to come down on mine again, much harder this time. The kiss was nothing like the gentle It was impulsive It was wrong, yet neither of us seemed willing to be stop My fingers tightened around his jacket as the world beyond the terrace seemed to disappear. And then_ "Ariana? Are you out here?" My entire body went still. Lily? Oh God.CHAPTER 35Ariana’s POVFor a few terrifying seconds, I couldn't move.My eyes remained locked on Vanessa. She was still holding her coffee mug, her expression so perfectly unbothered that it made me question my own sanity. Did she mean to slip that out? Or did I just imagine the venom beneath her words?Maybe she hadn't noticed my reaction. Maybe she had, and was savoring every drop of my panic.I slipped my phone back into my pocket, the screen still buzzing against my thigh."I need to get some air," I said, my voice sounding raspy even to my own ears.Lily looked up from her phone, her forehead creasing. "Already? You haven't even finished your coffee.""Yeah. Just... just for a minute."Vanessa’s gaze tracked me as I stood up, her dark eyes following every movement. "I can come with you if you'd like," she offered softly. The offer was polite. Painfully, terrifyingly polite.I forced a tight, brittle smile. "Actually, I think I just need a second to—"Ding-dong.The doorbell chim
CHAPTER 34Ariana’s POVI stayed behind the shut door of my bedroom until the sharp chime of the doorbell cut through the quiet.Once.Then twice.I closed my eyes, letting my forehead rest against the cold wood. She’s here.Knowing Vanessa Hale was standing on the other side of our apartment door made the nightmare feel infinitely more real than any anonymous text message ever could. A shadowy text message was easy to dismiss as a malicious prank. A living, breathing person stepping into my sanctuary was a execution of intent.I forced myself away from the door and walked over to the bathroom mirror. The reflection staring back at me was terrible. Dark violet smudges bruised the tender skin beneath my eyes, my hair was a messy tangle, and a rigid, fragile tension held my jaw. No amount of forced composure was going to hide the fact that I hadn't slept a full night in weeks.I splashed freezing water over my face and pressed a small towel to my cheeks, taking a long, shuddering breath
CHAPTER 33Damien’s POVI stared at Ariana's message long after the screen dimmed.Do you know Vanessa Hale?Four simple words.Yet they read like a verdict.I looked at the Manila folder resting on my desk, then back at my phone. There were several ways I could play this.Yes. Too stark.Of course I know her. She’s been in my circle for years. Too dismissive.Or I could deflect—turn it back on her and demand to know why she was suddenly asking about Vanessa in the first place. That was the safest play.My thumbs moved across the glass.Damien: Why are you asking? The double checkmarks turned blue almost instantly. Delivered. Read.No response.I waited.Thirty seconds. A minute. Two.I leaned back in my leather chair, my eyes glued to the dark interface. Something had shifted. Ariana didn't throw out names like Vanessa Hale on a casual whim. Not now. Not with everything unraveling around us.My mind raced through the breadcrumbs: The anonymous texts. The warnings. The archive photo f
CHAPTER 32Ariana’s POVI didn't sleep. Not properly, anyway.Every time I closed my eyes, the same two messages burned behind my eyelids.Do not come home to the house tonight, Ariana. And then, from an unknown number:But you still don't know who Vanessa is.I spent most of the night staring at the dark lines of my ceiling, trying to convince myself that I was inventing patterns out of thin air. Paranoia making connections where none existed.Vanessa was just a name. A common one. There were probably thousands of women named Vanessa in the city alone. And yet, the instant I’d read those text messages, my mind had latched onto a single face.Vanessa Hale.I rolled onto my side and grabbed my phone. No new messages from Mum.No response from the unknown caller.Nothing from Damien, either.I hated myself for noticing that last part. After everything that had unraveled—after discovering my mother had been tied to his family long before I was even a thought—Damien Kingston should have b
CHAPTER 31Damien’s POVI didn't leave the office that night. There was too much static in my head to even consider sleep. The quiet humming of the central air conditioning and the distant glitter of the city skyline through my floor-to-ceiling windows were the only things keeping me grounded.Warren's parting words kept repeating on a relentless loop in my mind: If you care about your sister, you'll let this go.It hadn't been a warning. It was a threat thinly veiled as paternal concern. And the most infuriating part was that he hadn't even bother to deny the core accusation. He hadn't called me crazy. He hadn't called the visitor log a forgery. He had simply used Lily as leverage to force my silence.I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the mahogany desk, the faded scan of the Westbridge visitor log lying open between my hands. Across the room, Marcus was pacing near the lounge chairs, his phone pressed firmly against his ear.He finally ended the call and looked over at me, shaki
CHAPTER 30Ariana’s POVI barely slept.Every time I closed my eyes, the photograph burned against the darkness behind my eyelids. My mother, young and hesitant, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Warren Kingston, Victoria Kingston, and Elric Blackwell.October 14, 2005.Westbridge Children's Home. And echoing right behind it was my mother’s voice over the phone from the night before, tight and laced with panic: Certain things from that time were buried for a reason.I had spent hours tossing and turning on my mattress, trying to rationalize her words. Trying to convince myself she was simply shielding me from a mundane past. An old heartbreak. A difficult financial period. An embarrassing mistake from her youth.Anything normal. But deep down, the lie tasted bitter. My mother wasn't a fragile woman who crumbled over ordinary memories. She was resilient, grounded, and intensely practical. And she had never hung up on me.By seven in the morning, I gave up on sleep entirely. I dragged
