The shrill ring of an encrypted phone sliced through the silence of Alessandro Romano's office.

He barely glanced at the screen before answering.

"Talk."

"Nicolas Hayes."

Alessandro leaned back in his leather chair.

"What do you have?"

"The shipment is moving tonight."

His expression hardened.

"How many?"

"Thirty-seven."

A pause.

"Mostly women. Four children."

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

"Location?"

"Pier Forty-Two."

Nicolas lowered his voice.

"The traffickers changed routes after last week's raid. My people can't move in without alerting the politicians protecting them."

"And you expect me to do your job?"

"I expect you to do what you always do."

Alessandro let out a dry chuckle.

"You ask that as if I'm a hero."

"I know better," Nicolas replied. "You're just a devil hunting worse devils."

The line went silent.

"I'll handle it."

He ended the call before Nicolas could respond.

The city glittered beneath the floor-to-ceiling windows of Romano Holdings.

Luxury.

Power.

Money.

People looked at the towering skyscraper and saw success.

They never imagined that decisions made inside its walls determined who lived... and who disappeared before sunrise.

A knock came at the office door.

"Come in."

Bianca entered carrying a tablet and two cups of coffee.

"I figured you'd skipped breakfast again."

"I have work."

"You always have work."

She placed the coffee on his desk before folding her arms.

"When was the last time you slept?"

"I don't remember."

"I do."

He looked up.

"You've worked for sixteen straight days."

"I'm alive."

"Barely."

A faint smile tugged at Bianca's lips.

"You know, normal billionaires spend weekends on yachts."

"I hate yachts."

"They travel."

"I hate airports."

"They date."

"I hate people."

Bianca laughed.

"There he is."

"What?"

"My brother."

"I haven't gone anywhere."

"For a second I thought the mafia prince had completely disappeared."

Alessandro smirked.

"He died years ago."

Her smile faded.

"No..."

She stepped closer.

"I think he buried himself."

Before Alessandro could answer, another knock interrupted them.

Eva Romano entered elegantly, dressed in cream silk despite the early hour.

She looked from one child to the other.

"Am I interrupting?"

Bianca grinned.

"Perfect timing."

Eva raised an eyebrow.

"What happened now?"

"He admitted he hates people."

Eva looked at Alessandro.

"That's progress."

"I didn't realize honesty was a medical breakthrough."

"It is in this family."

She crossed the room and adjusted his crooked tie.

"You've been wearing the same suit since yesterday."

"It still fits."

"So does exhaustion."

"I'm fine."

Eva sighed.

"You sound exactly like your father."

"Is that supposed to comfort me?"

"No."

She smiled gently.

"It's supposed to worry you."

Alessandro softened for a moment.

Only Eva could scold him without making him feel cornered.

She rested a hand on his cheek.

"Whatever burden you're carrying..."

"I'm handling it."

"You don't always have to."

He looked away.

"I know."

But they both knew he didn't believe it.

That night...

Rain pounded the deserted docks.

Shipping containers stood like towering walls beneath the storm.

Black SUVs rolled to a silent stop.

Doors opened simultaneously.

Nearly twenty armed men stepped out.

Each wore black tactical gear bearing no family insignia.

No witnesses.

No signatures.

No credit.

Alessandro emerged last.

He adjusted the gloves on his hands.

"Report."

One of his captains stepped forward.

"They're inside Warehouse Seven."

"Hostages?"

"Confirmed."

"Weapons?"

"Military grade."

Alessandro looked toward the rusted building.

"No unnecessary casualties."

The captain nodded.

"What about the traffickers?"

His expression turned cold.

"They made their choice."

Inside the warehouse...

Dozens of frightened women sat chained together.

Several children huddled beside them.

A little girl clutched a worn teddy bear missing one eye.

She couldn't have been older than six.

One trafficker laughed as he counted stacks of passports.

"Tomorrow we'll double our profits."

Another took a drag from his cigarette.

"Those politicians are paying extra this time."

Suddenly—

The lights went out.

"What the—"

A loud crash echoed through the warehouse.

Then another.

Gunfire exploded.

The traffickers scrambled for cover.

Masked men stormed inside from every entrance.

"Move!"

"Protect the civilians!"

"Go! Go!"

The captives screamed.

One guard raised his rifle toward the children.

A single shot rang out.

The rifle slipped from his hands as he collapsed.

Alessandro lowered his pistol.

"Get them out."

His men immediately began breaking chains.

"It's okay," one operative whispered to the frightened women.

"You're safe."

The little girl stared at Alessandro with wide eyes.

He knelt before her.

"Can you walk?"

She nodded slowly.

He held out his hand.

She hesitated.

Then placed her tiny fingers into his gloved palm.

"It's over," he said quietly.

"You don't have to be afraid anymore."

She squeezed his hand tighter.

A roar echoed from the upper floor.

"There he is!"

The traffickers' leader appeared surrounded by armed guards.

"You Romano?"

Alessandro stepped forward.

"I am."

The man laughed.

"I've heard stories."

"You won't hear mine."

Gunfire erupted again.

Bullets tore through crates and steel beams.

Within minutes...

The warehouse fell silent.

Bodies lay scattered across the concrete floor.

Only one man remained standing.

The traffickers' leader.

Blood streamed from a wound on his shoulder as he dropped to his knees.

"You think killing me changes anything?"

Alessandro walked toward him.

"There'll always be another buyer."

Another step.

"Another shipment."

Another.

"Another child."

He smiled through bloody teeth.

"You can't save them all."

Alessandro stopped inches away.

"No."

His voice was calm.

"But I can stop you."

The man laughed.

"You know who protects me?"

"I don't care."

"Government ministers."

Silence.

"Judges."

Another pause.

"Even mafia families."

Alessandro crouched until they were eye level.

"Then they'll learn something tonight."

The trafficker frowned.

"What?"

"They can't protect dead men."

A single gunshot echoed through the warehouse.

The body collapsed backward.

No one spoke.

One of Alessandro's captains approached carefully.

"The survivors are secure."

Alessandro looked toward the rescued women climbing into ambulances.

The little girl turned back and waved at him.

For the first time that night...

He smiled.

Only slightly.

Then it disappeared.

"Burn everything."

"The records?"

"Everything."

"If another syndicate comes looking?"

"They'll find ashes."

An hour later...

Nicolas Hayes arrived as emergency crews swarmed the docks.

He surveyed the scene before spotting Alessandro standing alone near the water.

"You always leave me paperwork."

Alessandro didn't turn.

"You'll survive."

Nicolas joined him.

"Thirty-seven victims rescued."

A pause.

"No civilian casualties."

Another pause.

"You know the newspapers will call this another gang war."

"They usually do."

"You could tell people the truth."

Alessandro finally looked at him.

"And say what?"

"That a mafia boss rescued innocent people."

Nicolas smiled.

"No one would believe it."

"Exactly."

The two men watched as the first rays of dawn stretched across the water.

Neither noticed a black sedan parked on a distant hill overlooking the harbor.

Inside, Lorenzo De Santis lowered a pair of binoculars.

A slow smile spread across his face.

"So..."

he murmured.

"The prince is becoming dangerous."

He closed the binoculars and reached for his phone.

"Keep watching Alessandro Romano."

There was a brief silence before he added,

"And if he ever falls in love..."

His smile widened.

"Let me know first."

The cheerful chatter in the hotel lobby faded into a distant hum.Alessandro frowned at Bianca."What did you just say?"Bianca glanced toward Sofia, who still stood several feet away with her phone pressed to her ear. Matteo's name flashed across the screen, and whatever he was saying had stolen the color from her face.Keeping her voice low, Bianca gripped Alessandro's arm."Her name is Sofia Moretti."Alessandro gave a short, disbelieving laugh."No.""I'm serious.""You've made a mistake.""I haven't."He looked over Bianca's shoulder at Sofia. The woman laughing with children, talking about charity, and arguing over paintings couldn't possibly belong to the family he had spent his life hating."You're certain?""I've seen her before," Bianca replied.
