The scratching sound of a fountain pen echoed through the silent courtroom.

Sofia Moretti stared at the divorce papers spread neatly before her. Black ink. White pages. A marriage reduced to signatures and legal clauses.

"Mrs. Romano," the attorney said gently, sliding the pen closer. "You may sign here."

Mrs. Romano.

The title had barely lasted a year.

Sofia let out a quiet breath before taking the pen. Her fingers didn't tremble. They had long since learned how to hide what her heart refused to forget.

Across the mahogany table sat Alessandro Romano.

Impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit, his broad shoulders remained stiff, his expression carved from stone. He didn't look at her once.

Not when she picked up the pen.

Not when she signed away the vows they'd once whispered to each other.

Not even when she pushed the papers back across the table.

The room remained unnervingly still.

Outside, camera shutters clicked relentlessly. Reporters shouted over one another behind the courthouse gates, desperate for a glimpse of the billionaire couple whose marriage had become the scandal of the decade.

Inside, no one spoke.

Bianca Romano couldn't keep her eyes off Sofia.

Something wasn't right.

The woman she'd come to know over the past year wasn't capable of betrayal. Sofia had cried with her, laughed with her, stayed beside her after Eva Romano's surgery, and treated every servant in the Romano mansion like family.

None of it matched the picture Alessandro seemed so convinced of.

Bianca shifted uneasily.

"Alessandro..." she said softly.

He raised a hand without looking at her.

"Not now."

His voice was cold.

Colder than she'd ever heard.

Across the room, Dante Romano leaned against the wall with folded arms.

"This should've happened months ago," he muttered.

Matteo Moretti shot him a murderous glare.

"You should be thanking my sister," Matteo growled. "She was foolish enough to believe peace was possible."

Dante smirked.

"And she learned her lesson."

Matteo took a step forward.

"What did you say?"

Before either man could move farther, two bodyguards stepped between them.

"Enough," the judge barked.

Silence settled once again.

Sofia slowly stood from her chair.

Her white dress wasn't extravagant, yet it carried an elegance that no designer label could define. It was the same color she'd worn when Alessandro slipped a ring onto her finger in a quiet chapel far from both families.

She wondered if he remembered.

Probably not.

The attorney turned another document toward Alessandro.

"Mr. Romano."

Without hesitation, Alessandro signed.

One signature.

That was all it took.

The marriage was over.

The judge removed his glasses.

"From this moment forward, your marriage is legally dissolved."

No applause.

No relief.

Just silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Almost mournful.

Sofia nodded politely.

"Thank you."

She turned toward the exit.

"That's it?" Dante scoffed behind her. "No excuses? No lies? You're just walking away?"

Sofia stopped.

For a brief second.

She looked over her shoulder—not at Dante.

At Alessandro.

He still hadn't looked at her.

A faint smile touched her lips.

"I've learned something," she said quietly.

Matteo frowned.

"What?"

"You can't force someone to trust you."

Her words hung in the air.

No one answered.

She resumed walking.

Bianca hurried after her.

"Sofia... wait."

Outside the courtroom doors, the noise from the reporters grew louder.

Bianca reached for her wrist.

"Sofia."

Sofia turned.

For the first time that morning, Bianca saw the exhaustion hidden behind her calm smile.

"You still love him, don't you?"

Sofia laughed softly.

"It doesn't matter anymore."

"It does."

"No."

Sofia gently squeezed Bianca's hand.

"Love without trust isn't love. It's hope... and hope eventually gets tired."

Bianca felt tears sting her eyes.

"I know my brother."

"So do I."

"Then why didn't you tell him the truth?"

A flicker of pain crossed Sofia's face.

"If he needed proof before believing me..."

She paused.

"...then my words would've changed nothing."

Bianca opened her mouth, only to close it again.

She had no answer.

Sofia stepped closer.

"Take care of him."

"What?"

"He's going to need someone."

Bianca frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Sofia smiled sadly.

"The truth always finds its way home."

She walked away before Bianca could stop her.

The courthouse doors opened.

Chaos erupted instantly.

"Cameras this way!"

"Mrs. Romano!"

"Did you betray the Romano family?"

"Was your marriage fake?"

"Who filed for divorce?"

"Do you regret marrying Alessandro?"

Flashes exploded around her.

Questions flew from every direction.

Sofia lowered her head and kept walking.

Not once did she answer.

A black luxury sedan pulled to the curb.

Rosa rushed out before the driver could even open the door.

"There you are."

Without another word, Rosa wrapped Sofia in a tight embrace.

For a moment...

Just a moment...

Sofia closed her eyes.

"You don't have to be strong anymore," Rosa whispered.

Sofia smiled against her shoulder.

"I wasn't."

Rosa pulled back.

"Come on."

They climbed into the car.

As it drove away, Sofia looked back only once.

The courthouse grew smaller behind her.

So did the life she'd fought so hard to protect.

...

Inside the courtroom, Alessandro remained standing near the window.

The reporters had now shifted their attention to Sofia's departing vehicle.

Dante walked over.

"You did the right thing."

Alessandro said nothing.

Dante continued.

"A traitor doesn't deserve your pity."

Still nothing.

Bianca approached cautiously.

"Did you ever ask yourself why she never defended herself?"

Dante laughed.

"Because guilty people never do."

Bianca glared at him.

"Or innocent people get tired of proving themselves."

Dante rolled his eyes.

"You've always been too soft."

"And you've always been too quick to hate."

Before the argument could continue, Alessandro's phone vibrated.

A single message.

Unknown Number.

He opened it.

You divorced the wrong person.

His heartbeat slowed.

"What is it?" Bianca asked.

He stared at the screen.

Another line appeared.

The real enemy is standing much closer than you think.

Before he could reply...

The message vanished.

Completely.

As though it had never existed.

Alessandro frowned.

He checked his inbox.

Nothing.

"No signal?" Dante asked.

"It disappeared."

"What disappeared?"

"The message."

Dante shrugged.

"Probably some journalist trying to get a reaction."

Maybe.

Yet something about the words unsettled him.

He looked toward the courthouse doors.

Sofia was gone.

For reasons he couldn't explain, the room suddenly felt far too quiet.

And for the first time since signing the divorce papers...

Alessandro wondered whether silence could be louder than regret.
