Clara’s phone buzzed in her hand, and she knew it was time to leave.

She leaned closer to Mark, lowering her voice so it wouldn’t carry over the muted music humming through the private room.

“I need to go. I still have work to finish.”

Mark barely looked at her. He nodded once, distracted, his attention already drifting back to the people around him. His lips curved into a lazy smile, loose, pleased, like a man settling deeper into a night he didn’t want to end.

“Okay,” that was all he said.

Something tight pulled in Clara’s chest, but she ignored it. She straightened, pasted on a polite smile, and said her quick goodbyes to his team. No one noticed her leaving.

Outside the room, the air felt cooler. She exhaled, adjusting her bag on her shoulder as she headed toward the stairs.

She hadn’t planned to stay this late. Mark had signed a major contract that evening, and she’d followed him to celebrate, just for a while, she’d told herself. Long enough to show support.

Halfway down the stairs, her steps slowed. Her hand froze at her side. Her car key.

Her stomach dipped as she stopped, turned back. Irritation brushed against fatigue. Of course. She must have left it on the table.

She climbed the stairs again, faster this time, already reaching for the door. It was open enough for her to see the inside.

Mark was laughing and his secretary too stood close. Close enough that Clara noticed the way her hand rested on his chest before her mind could stop her.

Close enough that when Mark leaned down, it felt practised. Their lips met.

The sound around her dulled, as if someone had turned the world down a notch. She stood there, unseen.

Around them, his team lingered, some pretending not to notice, others very clearly noticing. No one looked surprised.

Understanding landed slowly, cruelly. This isn’t new.

Heat rushed to her face, sharp and humiliating. Her fingers curled around the strap of her bag until it hurt. Stepping forward, she reached for the table and picked up her key.

Mark turned and their eyes met. Something flickered across his face. First shock, then calculation, but Clara was already walking away.

“Clara… wait.”

His footsteps followed her down the stairs. His voice chased her, low and urgent.

“It’s not what you think. Let me explain.”

She didn’t stop. By the time they reached the lower level, her chest was burning, not with tears, but with something hotter. She lifted her head, refusing to let him see anything break.

He caught up to her near the bar, grabbing her wrist.

“This isn’t..”

She yanked her hand free. “Don’t.”

Her voice surprised them both. It was steady and cold. People glanced over curiously.

“Please,” he said, lowering his voice. “Let’s talk upstairs.”

Clara laughed then. A short, humourless sound. “Now you want privacy?” She said, stepping back from him.

That’s when she saw him. He sat at the bar, turned slightly sideways, one elbow resting against the counter. A dark shirt, sleeves pushed up, shoulders broad. He looked ordinary and unimportant.

Mark was still talking behind her, his words tumbling over each other. He was sounding desperate now.

Something inside Clara snapped into terrifying clarity.

She turned and walked straight up to the stranger, and without giving herself time to think. She kissed him.

It wasn’t gentle. It was sharp and intentional, fueled by fury and humiliation and the need to take something back. Her hand fisted in the fabric of his shirt. She felt the brief hitch of surprise in him before she pulled away.

Silence rushed in. Clara turned to Mark. He stood frozen. His face was pale, stunned, eyes locked on her like he didn’t recognise the woman standing there.

The sight sent a slow, wicked satisfaction through her chest. Her lips curved in a smile. And for the first time that night, she felt good.

Mark didn’t move at first. He just stared at her, jaw tight, pride visibly cracking. Then his mouth twisted into something ugly.

“Are you serious?” he said sharply. “This is what you choose to do now?”

Clara didn’t answer. She turned back toward the bar, ready to leave, her pulse still racing, but the man she’d kissed was already standing. By then Mark had left.

He looked down at her, with an unreadable expression, his eyes were dark with something colder.

“Did you enjoy using me,” he asked quietly, “or was I just convenient?”

A few heads nearby turned. Someone laughed softly. Heat crawled up Clara’s neck.

“I didn’t.” Her fingers curled at her sides. “You don’t know what just happened.”

“No,” he agreed. “But I know what you did.” The stranger said, stepping closer. Close enough that she felt his presence like pressure.

“You wanted an audience,” he said. “Congratulations. You have one.” His tone dripped with sarcasm.

Her jaw clenched. “I didn’t ask you to stand there.”

A flicker of surprise crossed his face, quick, gone. Then he smiled dangerously.

“I like that,” he said. “Most women apologise. You don’t.”

She lifted her chin. “Most men don’t talk down to women they don’t know.”

A beat passed. Then a low laugh slipped from him. It wasn't warm.

“Careful,” he murmured.

Just then someone whispered his name behind her. And another voice followed. Louder and excited.

“Oh my God… that’s him.”

Clara’s stomach dropped. Turning around slowly, she saw faces lit with recognition. Her gaze snapped back to him.

“You’re…” Her voice failed.

His eyes held hers, steady, assessing, already in control.

“Matteo Devereaux,” he said quietly.

The name hit harder than the kiss.

Around them, someone gasped.

Clara stood frozen, her lips still burning, her mistake suddenly enormous.

And Matteo Devereaux looked down at her like he’d already decided what to do with her.

The door of Matteo's hospital room closed behind Clara. For a few seconds, silence settled over the room. Then Matteo slowly turned his head toward Luca. His expression was unreadable."Why did you bring her here?"Luca didn't even pretend not to understand. He leaned comfortably against the chair and folded his arms."I wanted to surprise both of you."A grin appeared on his face."I'd say it worked."Matteo stared at him. The grin immediately became less amusing.Luca cleared his throat. "Tough crowd.""Clara works for me."Matteo's voice remained flat."There was no reason for her to see me here."Luca's eyebrows rose."Really?""Yes.""That's your argument?"Matteo said nothing. Luca shook his head."She's not just another employee anymore."His tone became more serious."She's directly involved in everything surrounding you right now. The scandal, the company's progress, the social media department, Elena..."He gestured toward Matteo."And all of those things involve you."Matte

By the time Clara got home, the sky outside was already dark. She pushed the front door open and stepped inside with a tired sigh. The smell of food greeted her immediately. From the kitchen came the sound of a voice."You're finally back."Clara dropped her handbag on the console table and walked further into the house.Tara stood beside the kitchen island, holding a bowl. Nyx sat proudly on the counter while being fed pieces of chicken like royalty. The cat glanced at Clara once, then completely ignored her.Clara stopped walking. Her mouth fell open."Wow."Nyx continued eating."Seriously?"Nothing. Not even a blink.Tara burst out laughing."I think you've been replaced."Clara pointed accusingly at the cat."I carried you home when you were tiny."Nyx licked her paw."I buy your food."Nothing."I pay the bills in this house."Still nothing. Tara laughed harder."She's chosen her favourite parent."Clara looked personally offended."This betrayal hurts.""Be strong.""I'm trying

For several seconds, Clara stared. Her brain refused to connect the image before her with the Matteo Devereaux she knew. This was the same man who acted like he owned every room he walked into. The same man who spoke as if the world existed solely to inconvenience him.The same man who looked like he could survive a hurricane through sheer stubbornness. And yet… There he was in a hospital bed working. Because apparently, even hospitalisation wasn't enough to stop him.The shock must have shown on her face because Matteo slowly looked up from his laptop. Their eyes met.His expression immediately darkened. Then his gaze shifted toward Luca."Why is she here?"Luca looked entirely unbothered."Good evening to you too."Matteo's eyes narrowed."Why?"Luca walked into the room."Because Clara needs to know.""No, she doesn't.""Yes, she does."The exchange happened so naturally that Clara almost forgot she was standing there. Then reality returned. She blinked once, twice. They were still

By that Friday morning, Clara had already gone through three cups of coffee. Not because she was tired, but because she was trying not to think.About Elena. About the anonymous messages. About the shadow she had seen outside her window the previous night.About the possibility that someone was watching her.The only thing keeping her sane was work. So she buried herself in it.Her laptop was open in front of her while several documents covered her desk. The newly formed social media department already had enough tasks to keep everyone busy for weeks.A knock landed against her office door. Before she could answer, Vanessa stepped inside."Good morning."Clara looked up."Morning."Vanessa closed the door behind her before taking one of the seats opposite the desk. Her eyes immediately drifted toward the documents spread everywhere."So the rumors are true."Clara raised an eyebrow."Which rumors?""The new department."A small smile appeared on Vanessa's face."I heard Luca brought i

Clara's brows furrowed immediately. The change in Luca's expression was impossible to miss.Even Matteo, who had spent most of the meeting looking mildly irritated by everything around him, sat up slightly on the screen."What happened?" Clara asked.Luca walked toward the conference table and placed his tablet down. The screen lit up.The moment Clara saw the picture, her stomach dropped. It was Elena. She was sitting alone on a lounge chair overlooking the sea, dressed in an elegant white outfit. A glass of champagne rested on the small table beside her.At first glance, the picture looked harmless. Then Clara's eyes moved to the caption.Taking care of yourself is important. Sometimes you need to slow down and appreciate the beautiful things in life. ✨The caption itself wasn't the problem. The tag was.@MatteoDevereauxAnd the final line underneath.Thank you for always reminding me of that. ❤️The room became silent. Very silent.Clara stared at the screen. Then she looked at Luc

Clara barely slept.Even after Tara insisted there had been nobody outside the window, the uneasy feeling refused to leave her chest completely.Because she knew what she saw. Or at least she thought she did.The image kept replaying in her mind over and over again. The still figure outside the glass. The messages. The picture that had been secretly taken of her entering Devereaux Franchise.By the time morning came, exhaustion sat heavily beneath her eyes.Still, she forced herself through her usual routine. Work didn’t stop because her life was becoming complicated.Monaco’s morning air felt colder than usual as she drove toward the company building. Her fingers tapped lightly against the steering wheel while her thoughts kept drifting back to the anonymous sender. She had almost told Luca about the messages that morning.Almost.
