Alexander's POV

The cold glow of the video conference screen reflected on my face as the three men in Chicago fidgeted in their chairs.

I knew each of them - Salvatore, Carmine, Vito. Men that traitor considered friends. Men I considered pawns.

"Gentlemen," my voice echoed in my Reed Group office, hands clasped over the ebony desk. "I'm in New York, you're in Chicago, but money... well, money always finds its way."

Salvatore, with the expression lines that spoke of decades in business, spoke first. "Reed, Michael has already invested heavily in this project. Fifty percent of his capital is in it."

My fingers drummed lightly on the desk. "And how much was that investment?"

Carmine, the youngest, still with youthful arrogance, answered too quickly. "Ten million. And he deserves our loyalty after everything he's done for us."

An almost imperceptible smile crossed my lips. "Ten million." I let the number hang in the air like a sentence. "I offer one hundred million."

The silence was so pr

Sophia's POV The next morning, I was back in my – now former – office, facing the strange task of packing up the life of the senior marketing manager who had settled within those four walls.I took a deep breath, looking at the empty boxes on the floor, the already half-bare desk. Every item I picked up to pack was a memory. The pen Irina gave me two months ago? Went straight into the trash. But the photo of Emma and me laughing... that one I wrapped carefully, as if I could protect it from the world. My head wouldn't stop. CEO. The word echoed, but now it sounded more like a threat than a promotion. The ringing of my cell phone cut through the heavy silence. The name "Michael" lit up the screen. A mix of relief and guilt tightened my chest."Michael," I said, trying to keep my voice light."Love. How's the... move going?"His voice was tired, the forced cordiality masking the tension from our argument and the financial catastrophe I still didn't fully grasp."Haven't really started

Sophia's POV The meeting room on the top floor of the Pierce Holdings building was icy and impersonal. The huge, shiny table reflected the light, almost blinding me as I sat down.Mark was already there. He seemed nervous but gave me a small, encouraging smile when he saw me."Sophia," he whispered, moving closer. "Are you nervous?""It's more than that," I replied, keeping my voice low too. I looked around. Several important shareholders were already present. People who controlled a lot of money and made decisions that affected many lives."Don't worry about me," Mark continued whispering. "I'll be fine. It was a pleasure working with you." His voice was sincere, and it almost broke my heart."This is temporary, Mark," I whispered back, feeling guilty. "As soon as I sort some things out in my life, I'm leaving this position. It wasn't what I expected."He shook his head, understanding, but his look said he doubted anything in that company was really temporary. That's when Irina Volk

Michael's POVAs I was thinking about yesterday's fight, I heard Sophia's footsteps coming down the stairs. She was dressed for work, in a dark blue dress that hugged her waist, the one I always liked. Her brown hair was tied in a bun, but a few loose strands fell over her face. She didn't look at me when she entered the kitchen."I'm going to stop by my apartment first," she said, her voice cold and flat. Her hands rummaged through her bag, looking for her keys. "Em asked me to bring a coat and some documents to the hospital. After that, I'm going straight to work."I slammed my cup down hard on the table. Coffee splashed out. "So you're really going to accept that position." My voice came out harsh. She finally looked at me. Her eyes were slightly puffy, clearly a sign she had cried during the night. "Michael, I don't want to talk about this. Not now."I stood up and crossed the kitchen, stopping between her and the door. Her soft perfume, of white flowers, reached me. It was the s

Sophia's POVMy head began to spin, the world turning like a carousel out of control. I stood up so abruptly that the chair almost fell backward."Michael... who are you people? What else are you hiding from me?"He reached out, trying to calm me. "Soph, please sit down. Let me explain properly.""Is this woman my mother? My aunt? Who is she, Michael?" My voice sounded shrill, almost unrecognizable."I don't know, love. I swear I don't know." His eyes pleaded for understanding. "I don't understand either why Alexander had those documents, or why..."A bitter laugh escaped my lips, not from amusement, but from pure desperation. "I need to be alone. I need to think.""Don't go out now, Soph. You're too upset." He stood up, blocking my path."I think you should be more concerned with the fact that you hid this from me all this time!" I shouted, my hands trembling. "While I was going through all of this, you knew and stayed silent!"When I turned to open the door, my hands were so unstea

  • The Billionaire Replaced Me With My Assistant    Chapter 99

Sophia's POV The sound of my own voice echoed through the kitchen, louder and sharper than I had intended."Michael, you're just like all the other men! I can never fully trust you!"My hands were trembling so much I had to hide them in the folds of my skirt. The coffee cup I had been holding moments before was now knocked over on the table, the brown liquid spreading like a stain across the polished wood.Michael recoiled as if I had hit him. His eyes, normally so calm and calculating, were wide with disbelief."No, Sophia. Don't compare me to Alexander or to Richard Pierce, please." His voice was a thread of patience about to snap. "I've given you a thousand and one reasons to show you can trust me. Do you remember everything we've been through? Do you remember what I did to protect you from them?""Then why won't you tell me?" My voice broke, and I hated the vulnerability that showed through. "Why won't you tell me who this damn woman named Eleanor is? It seems like the whole wor
