Chapter 4

When I woke up, the first thing that I noticed was the soft linen sheets under my skin. This certainly didn't feel like the ones at home, I thought to myself as I opened my eyes.

I was lying down on a gigantic bed facing a magnificent view of the lake. The room was huge too, with many windows that let in natural light. Where was I? I wondered. I wasn't kidnapped right?

My brain struggled to remember what happened yesterday night but all I recalled was me walking into a nightclub and having played darts with Damian, who was the owner of the nightclub. Everything after was a complete blur to me.

I looked around, trying to orientate myself and I realised I was alone. Suddenly, panic hit me. Oh no! Where was my phone and wallet?

I looked around, and was relieved to see my silver purse at the bedside table, along with a tablet of aspirin and a glass of water. I took the purse and rummaged through it to find my phone.

10 missed calls from mom. Oh no, I had forgot to tell her I won't be staying the night. Sighing, I quickly texted her that I was fine, and was staying at a friend's house. Interestingly, I had a new call from a new number I have not saved before.

That same number had left me a text message that read: I hope you're awake. I had left to give you some privacy. You were knocked out last night so I brought you to my penthouse. I hope you're feeling better. -D

Oh. That new number was Damien. I typed out a reply hastily. 'Thank you. I am feeling better today. Nothing happened between us, right?" I had to know. Yesterday was too fuzzy and I didn't want to have done anything that I had to regret.

Suddenly, the door opened. A tall figure walked in and I was startled, still popping the aspirin into my mouth and washing it down with some cold water.

I looked up and Damian was standing in front of me. "Hi," he said gently. "I hope you're feeling better from yesterday. I apologize if the alcohol was too much. I didn't know you were a lightweight."

I flushed. I was hopeless with alcohol and always got drunk or did something I regretted. "I'm feeling better now. But... did we do anything last night?" I asked tentatively.

Damian smirked, his lips curling up. He smelt like bodywash and cologne. He must have just showered, I thought to myself.

"Define what you mean by 'anything'." He said impassively.

"Did we... kiss?" I asked, already feeling the heat from my cheeks. Oh no, this was so awkward to say in person. I had not expected him to just walk in like this.

"You really don't remember huh." He said contemplatively. "Maybe that's for the best. You are going to be my personal assistant soon and we can't be fooling around." He said, suddenly turning authoritative.

"Oh no. That means we kissed." I groaned. I can't believed I kissed my to-be boss. Was I going to be fired even before I start my job?

Sensing my unease, Damian said soothingly, "it is okay, let's start from scratch and pretend nothing happened."

"Oh no! I need to get to school. It's late and my lessons have already started." I said worriedly, glancing at the clock which read 10am.

"Sure, I will send a chauffeur for you." His tone made it difficult to argue eith so I did not protest. I was still wearing my previous day's dress and it was not in a  good state to say the least.

"My clothes," I started to panic again but he simply said, "I have some clean clothes. They are my sister's. You can wear them."

He passed me a bag and I headed to the washroom to change. The toilet was enormous and luxurious, with an inviting bathtub and matching white tiles. It was a simple light pink blouse and a pair of jeans, and I was grateful to him for having spent effort to prepare the clothes.

When I was done, I headed out but Damian had mysteriously disappeared. Nonetheless, I went out of the bedroom and saw a large common corridor. Geez, this house was so big I could get lost in it.

I managed to locate the living room and there was an older man there. When I approached, he smiled warmly. "I am Mr Brown, the chauffeur."

"Nice to meet you, I am Katherine." I said, holding out my hand to shake his.

After climbing into the Chevrolet in the garage, we drove off in the direction of the school. It was already midday by then and the students were probably eating their lunch now.

Sure enough, when I reached my school, the cafeteria was bustling with people. "Kate, where have you been?" My friend Sammy spotted me in the distance and waved for me to join her. She sounded worried and I suddenly felt guilty. I should have informed my friends that I was out yesterday night.

"I went to a club." I said, trying to be curt but their eyes widened and started asking me a lot of questions. Quickly, I filled them in with the details.

"What? A personal assistant to Damian Ryker, the hottest bachelor in town? What a great find." Sammy said in disbelief. "You have such luck!"

"Well, I don't know if I should accept." I said truthfully. I hadn't told them about the part where I got drunk but I decided to keep it a secret.

"Why not? That will be a perfect opportunity for you in business administration. The Ryker business is booming with their number of nightclubs and entertainment outlets." Joey chimed in.

Hearing their enthusiastic responses, I knew what I had to do. No way I was going to turn down such a precious opportunity. Even if it meang dealing with someone as intense as Damien, it was worth it.

I was going to call him tonight.
