"I said no." The words came out like I'd been practicing them for years. Damien's face darkened behind the mahogany desk. He rose and walked toward the couch where I sat, tall and imposing as always. I shifted away. "Why are you moving away?" I said nothing. "Elena." "What?" Tears stung my eyes. "You told me never to show my face to you, and now you want me back after every humiliation? You denied your own children and nearly got them killed. Now you want me and the 'bastards' back in your house. Never." His face darkened further. Then he ran a hand through his hair, exhausted, and caught my hands. "Let go of me!" "Shh... Be calm. I'm sorry. Please." I stared at him. Did he just apologize? Elena's parents died when she was sixteen. Her gambler father, James Hayes, owed Damien's father, Romano Blackwood, ten million dollars. When James kept making excuses, Romano came to collect in person, and the same day James's other enemies burned the building down. Elena came home to ashes. Damien's men took her to the Blackwood estate, where he humiliated her daily until he left abroad for a business award. He returned on her eighteenth birthday with no gift, only a plan to break her further by blaming her family for his father's death. At his party, an admirer drugged him, and he had Elena brought to him. A month later she told him she was pregnant. He called her a slut and refused a child with his "debt payment." Learning he was her first, he began wanting her close.

Chapter 1

Chapter one: Taken by the enemy.

Elena's POV

"Grab her, she's coming with us."one of the men in black suits yelled.

"No! Don't touch me!" I screamed at the top of my voice, moving back.

The one called James grabbed my hand and dragged me up from the ground like I weighed nothing more than an A4 paper. His grip was like iron.

"Let go of me! Let go!"

I’d left a quiet home this morning. My dad was laying on the couch, his face buried in his hands, obviously thinking of how to repay the huge debt he owed the Blackwood. I definitely knew. He looked so tired, so broken. I remember telling him, "It will be okay, Dad."

I expected to see him when I got back from school, maybe with a plan. But now I come home to a completely ruined place. The mansion I once called home has been brought down to ashes by fire. The walls are black, the windows are gone, everything is burnt. I feel so confused, my whole body is shaking. How did this happen? Who could do this?

As I wandered in tears around the scene, wondering where to go, wondering if my dad was still inside, I saw men all dressed in black suits. Not one I could recognize. Their faces were cold and unfamiliar.

I was about to hide behind what was left of our gate when I tripped on a broken glass and fell hard on my knees. I cried out in pain.

Now I'm being dragged to God knows where.

"Who are you? Let me go! Please, let me go!" I begged, struggling.

"Shut up, girl, and get in the car," their leader with a hoarse voice said as we approached the group of cars lined up on the street. All black, all with dark tinted windows. They looked like cars from a mafia movie.

"I'm not getting in! I'm not going anywhere with you!" I said as I struggled with the man holding me, kicking and scratching.

"Young lady, do not make it harder for yourself," James said coldly, his jaw tight. "You don't want to make him angry."

People hid behind their curtains watching everything. I could see eyes peeking from windows. No one could say a word, no one dared to help. It was like they feared the men more than anything.

"Okay, since you're so stubborn, let's do it the hard way," their leader approached step by step, slowly, like he was enjoying my fear.

"Hey, get away from me! Stay away from me!" I don't know how I got the courage to speak to these people like that. My heart was beating so fast I thought it would burst.

The man got close, grabbed my arm roughly, and forced me toward the black SUV. His hands were rough.

"Hey! Let go of me! Somebody help me!" I reached for the door handle on the other end but it opened and one of them got in from there, blocking me. James got in from my side and closed the door with a loud bang. I was trapped in the middle.

I screamed for help at the top of my lungs.

"Hey, shhh, keep it down if you don't want your brains to be blown out right here on this street," their leader said, turning from the front seat. He showed me a gun, black and shiny, and pointed it at my head. Fear shot up in me, freezing every word in my throat, silencing me at once.

Oh God, where or what did they do to my father? Is he alive?

"Where is my father? What did you do to him? Tell me!" I asked their leader, tears finally spilling from my eyes. He didn't respond. He just stared ahead.

"I said where is my father! Where is he?" I shouted, my voice shaking.

"Enough!" he barked, rolled down his window, and shot straight into the sky above the street. The gunshot was so loud, my ears rang.

"Huh!" I gasped, covering my mouth with both hands, trembling violently.

"Good. Now you know I'm not playing. Now move," he said to the driver, and quickly the engine roared to life and we sped off.

The car sped past the lively street bustling with life. Traders, students, cars. A few minutes ago I was among those people, happily returning from school, listening to music. How did I end up in the hands of these hooligans? How did my life change so fast?

Beep. Beep.

I heard a phone beep and my head quickly snapped to where the sound came from. The leader answered immediately.

"I'm sorry to say this, Sir, but... everything was gone and... your father as well," a voice said from the other side of the phone, panicked.

What! Whose father I wondered. Is he talking about my father?

Bang!

A loud sound was heard from the background from the other end. Something like a table being flipped or a glass shattering.

"How dare he! How dare that man think he can run after what he did!" A hard, deep baritone voice boomed from the other end. The voice was so powerful, so full of anger, that even through the phone it made me flinch.

"I'm sorry, Sir, but we found someone," their leader said, giving me a cold glance from the rearview mirror. My stomach dropped instantly.

"Bring anyone you find at that house, am I understood? I don't care who it is. Bring them to me. Now!" came the voice again, louder and more dangerous.

"Yes, Sir," the leader said and the call ended.

"No, where are you taking me to? Please don't take me there! Please, I beg you, let me go!" I cried, looking at James.

One of them laughed at me from the passenger seat.

"Don't get too scared, dummy. You should be scared, but not too much. At least not yet," he said, smirking.

I watched as the car drove along the road, passing traffic like they owned the area. Cars moved out of their way. Even the traffic police didn't stop them.

Finally, after what felt like an hour, the car pulled up at a huge black gate. It was at least twelve feet tall, with security cameras everywhere.

It opened slowly, automatically, and they drove into the compound and I was so wowed by the sight, even through my tears.

A garden at the corner, full of red and white roses, perfectly trimmed. A water fountain with a golden horse statue spouting water in the middle of the garden. The driveway was long and lined with palm trees.

Then the mansion came into view. Oh my God. It was enormous. White marble, tall pillars, floor-to-ceiling windows. It was ten times bigger than my father's house. It looked like a palace.

I wasn't given enough time to look as I was blindfolded. A rough black cloth was tied over my eyes.

"Hey, what are you doing? Let me go! I can't see!" I screamed as I was being blindfolded, my hands flailing.

Someone dragged me out of the car, gripping my upper arm so tight it hurt. I felt myself being pushed forward. I couldn't see where I was going.

I heard whispers of people around me. I think I heard girls giggling. I think there were maids whispering, "Who is that?" I can't see for now, I could only hear footsteps.

Then after a while of tripping on stairs as we climbed up I counted at least twenty steps and being laughed at by someone, I heard someone hiss, "Be quiet, he's coming."

"You know Damien is more terrifying than his father, right" One of the guards said

But that sent more shivers down my spine.

Then I finally heard the voice I heard over the phone. The deep, baritone, terrifying voice. It was right in front of me now.
