Prologue

Fafane

“Why?” I whispered, the single word barely leaving my lips.

“Why?” my sister repeated with a cruel laugh. “You want to know why?”

She stood in front of me, lazily twirling a knife between her fingers before dragging over a chair and sitting across from me as though we were old friends sharing tea instead of my nightmare.

“Where do I even begin?” she mused. “You had everything, the perfect life, the perfect fiancé, and everyone adored you.”

“I shared everything I had with you,” I said, my voice cracking. “You were never just my sister; you were my best friend.”

“Oh, please.” She let out a dry, mocking laugh before lifting my chin with the tip of the knife. “So what? Was I supposed to spend my entire life living in your shadow? Grateful for your leftovers?”

“I never saw you as someone beneath me.” Tears blurred my vision. “I loved you. I would have given you anything.”

“And you did.” Her smile widened. “Your life. Your future. Even your fiancé.”

My heart stopped.

Henry stepped out of the shadows, adjusting the cuffs of his expensive suit. The engagement ring he had placed on my finger only weeks ago suddenly felt like a cruel joke. He didn’t even try to deny it. He smiled at her.

“You.” My voice trembled. “Henry, why?”

He slipped an arm around my sister’s waist without an ounce of guilt. Before I could process the betrayal, a sharp kick slammed into my side, knocking me onto the cold floor. I looked up, desperately searching for someone to save me. Instead, I found the two people I had called Mom and Dad standing beside Henry, watching my suffering with smiles on their faces.

“Please,” I begged. “Help me.”

Not one of them moved, nor did they look guilty. I only saw hatred staring back at me.

My sister crouched beside me, her grin growing wider. “I’ll let you in on a little secret.” She brushed a strand of hair behind my ear as if comforting me. “Those aren’t your parents.”

My breath caught.

“They’re mine,” she laughed.

The room spun.

“Your real parents?” She chuckled. “They’re the richest family in the city. When you were born, my father stole you after your mother ended a business partnership that made him millions. He raised you under another name while I enjoyed watching you live the life that was always supposed to be mine.”

Every word shattered another piece of my soul.

“And now,” she whispered, pressing the knife against my throat, “I’m taking the rest.”

I watched as Henry, my fiancé, pulled my sister into his arms and gave her a sweet kiss, the way he used to with me, while my parents stood behind them and laughed. All the while, I was here on the floor inside a dirty warehouse, bleeding to death, and the people I call family didn't give a damn.

If I have to get a second chance, I'll make them pay

Chapter 46Quashawn I was still thinking about last night, more specifically, I was thinking about my wife standing against the kitchen counter, looking at my mouth like she wanted me to kiss her, and I would’ve if Grandma hadn’t called.I shook my head as I walked into my office; of all the times that woman could’ve called me. Then again, Fafane ran away the second I hung up, so maybe Grandma had saved my wife from something she wasn’t ready for, for now. A knock sounded against the door. “Come in.”Malik walked inside carrying a folder and dropped into the chair across from my desk. “We have a problem.”I leaned back. “Which one?” Because lately, there seemed to be plenty.“Henry Wilson,” Malik said, the name that I didn't want to hear. Of course, “What about him?”“He contacted the office again this morning asking about the investment.” He explained. I wasn’t surprised; Henry had been trying to get the Bakers to invest in his company for a while

  • The Billionaire in oil-stained hands    The interrupted kiss

Chapter 45 Fafane When I got into the shower, I was still pissed. Apparently, stabbing a watermelon and stuffing my face with it wasn’t enough to get rid of my frustration. But standing under the warm water helped, and little by little, I could feel the tension leaving my body. By the time I stepped out of the bathroom, I felt somewhat human again. My phone was buzzing on the dresser. Without bothering to get dressed first, I picked it up and checked the notification. Well, it looked like Ethan Owan’s karma had come faster than I anticipated. He’d been in a car accident, and according to the article, his condition was uncertain. I shook my head with pity. The only thing I know is that if he wanted to avoid a wheelchair, he’d finally learn to respect women, because one of the best doctors who could help him right now was Dr. Elana Holland. A woman- I couldn’t help the laugh that escaped me. Knowing Ethan, I could already imagine him refusing to let her anywhere near him simply b

  • The Billionaire in oil-stained hands    The mystery behind my wife

Chapter 44 Quashawn I was halfway through reviewing a stack of reports when the front door opened. Without saying a word, Fafane walked in, kicked off her heels at the entrance, and headed straight for the kitchen. She washed her hands, grabbed a bowl of freshly cut watermelon from the refrigerator, and stabbed a piece with a small fruit knife before shoving it into her mouth. “That stupid asshole,” she muttered, stabbing another piece. “How dare he?!” “The watermelon is innocent,” I murmured without looking up from the report. Her head snapped toward me, then she stabbed the watermelon one more time. “Can you believe that bastard Ethan Owan?” I closed the folder and looked at her. “No. What did he do to you?” “Oh, what didn't he do?” She popped another piece into her mouth before throwing her free hand into the air. “Apparently, a woman shouldn’t be in power.” She rolled her eyes so hard I was surprised they didn’t get stuck. “Like, where the hell does that fucker think he

  • The Billionaire in oil-stained hands    Face to face

Chapter 43 Fafane Maybe I went a little overboard with the shopping yesterday, but then again, it wasn’t every day your sister handed your husband a fifty-million-dollar check to divorce you. So, yes, I made the best of that money and enjoyed every second of it. I was still in a good mood when I walked into the office the next morning. I’d even stopped for coffee for everyone, which explained the tray in my hands and the ridiculous smile on my face. That smile disappeared the second I saw Henry standing in the lobby. I wondered when that parasite was going to crawl out of whatever hole he’d been hiding in. Sighing, I walked straight past him. “Fafane,” he called out, calling my name. I stopped in front of the elevator and took a deep breath before turning around. “Henry.” I gave him a polite smile. “What can I do for you?” Apparently, that was the wrong thing to say. “What can you do for me?” he repeated, stalking toward me. “You don’t think I deserve an explanation after t

Chapter 42 Quashawn “Boss, there’s a car outside. It’s been sitting there for about an hour,” Jeremy, one of the mechanics, informed me. Without looking up from what I was doing, I asked, “Is it the same woman?” I refused to say her name. Jeremy laughed. “You know she wouldn’t be shy enough to sit outside.” He had a point; she wouldn’t stay in a car for an hour. She’d strut right into my shop, flaunting her hips and those long nails before opening her mouth to talk nonsense. With a sigh, I put down my tools and stood. “I’ll handle it.” The closer I got to the car, the more familiar it became; it was Tessa Fafane’s sister. She stepped out the moment I approached. “You’re scaring the people inside,” I told her. She crossed her arms and looked me up and down like I was something she’d scraped off the bottom of her shoe. “You’re the commoner who married my sister?” I looked down at my grease-stained shirt before meeting her eyes again, bored. “What if I am?” I took another step

  • The Billionaire in oil-stained hands    Making a move

Chapter 41 Fafane After spending two days at the house making it look and feel like a home, I was finally back at the office catching up on work when my assistant rushed through the door. “Miss, I have news about Henry.” That caught my attention; I looked up from the document in front of me. “What news?” “He went to the Bakers with a business proposal,” she explained quietly. I paused. “The Bakers?” She nodded. I waved her out of the office and leaned back in my chair. If I remember correctly, the Bakers were not people you knocked on their door unless you were prepared for the consequences. They had enough power to make someone fall from grace without lifting much more than a finger. And Henry had approached them himself. Would the CEO agree to his proposal? I hoped he was just as ruthless as he had been in my previous life. Although no one had ever seen the mysterious CEO in person, so I couldn’t be certain. Should I warn them? No, I wasn’t getting myself involved in Henry
