MasukChapter 1
Fafane I woke with a gasp, my chest burned as I clawed at my throat, expecting to feel the cold edge of a knife. There was nothing, no blood, no pain, no ropes, just the frantic beat of my heart. “What?” My breathing came in short, uneven bursts as I looked around the leather seats, at my favorite vanilla air freshener. With the half-empty bottle of water rolling across the passenger seat, I was in my car. My hands tightened around the steering wheel while memories crashed into me like a tidal wave. Henry, my sister's laughter while she was holding the knife under my neck, and the people I had called Mom and Dad standing there, watching me die without lifting a finger. A sob escaped before I could stop it. “No.” I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to convince myself it had all been a nightmare. It wasn’t; I remembered every second, every betrayal and lie, all the promises that turned into a weapon. My trembling fingers reached into my purse for my phone the lock screen lit up. July 5th. One year earlier. I stared at the date until my vision blurred. “No.” My voice cracked. “This isn’t possible.” I checked again, the same date and year. My pulse pounded so loudly I could barely hear myself think. I was alive, not just alive but back to a full year before they murdered me. My eyes slowly lifted toward the windshield. Across the parking lot stood an elegant restaurant, its golden lights reflecting in the evening sky. Recognition hit instantly; tonight was the night I agreed to go on the blind date. I almost laughed. In my previous life, my coworker had insisted I meet a friend of her cousin. A mechanic, I had refused. Why would I meet another man when I was happily engaged to Henry? Instead, I called Henry, apologized for even considering it, and drove straight to him. If only I had known he had spent that night in another woman’s bed, my sister’s bed. A bitter smile spread across my lips. “What a joke.” I wiped away the tears still clinging to my cheeks. “No more.” No more trusting people simply because they smiled, no more pretending my family loved me. This life would be different. I unlocked my phone again and stared at Henry’s contact. In my last life, seeing his name made my heart race. Now, it made me sick without hesitation; I blocked his number. One tap was all it took to erase the man I once thought I’d spend forever with. “I hope you’re confused,” I whispered. “You deserve worse.” A strange calm settled over me. For the first time in what felt like forever, I wasn’t reacting; I was choosing. My gaze drifted back to the restaurant, the mysterious blind date. A mechanic, at least that’s what everyone had called him. I smiled. “I skipped this once.” Opening the car door, I stepped into the warm evening air. “This time,” I locked the car and started walking toward the entrance. “I’m curious.” Without realizing it, every step carried me farther away from the life that had ended in betrayal and closer to the man whose oil-stained hands would rebuild the shattered pieces of my heart.Chapter 59 Quahshawn Early that morning, my parents insisted I drive them to the airport. The entire ride, Mom kept reminding me that when they returned from their trip, I needed to bring Fafane over for dinner. I promised I would; I didn’t tell her when. Of course, she didn’t like that answer. By the time I walked them to the gate and made it back to my car, I let out a sigh of relief. At least with them gone, that was one less problem I had to worry about when it came to the gala. Still, I was annoyed; driving them to the airport meant I’d missed breakfast with my wife. It's something that I promise never to miss, but my parents, or more like my mother, were not taking no for an answer this morning. When I got back to the shop, someone was already waiting for me. I recognized him immediately; it was Caleb from Aura. Why the hell was he here? “Anything I can help you with?” I asked, not bothering with a greeting. He got to his feet. “You’re Fafane’s husband.” What was thi
Chapter 58 Fafane I woke up to the smell of coffee. I reached for my phone on the nightstand and checked the time. I still had enough time to get to the office before my meeting. Swinging my legs off the bed, I went straight to the bathroom, showered, and got dressed. Barefoot, I walked downstairs to find Quashawn sitting at the table with enough food spread across it to feed an entire family. I stopped. “Uhm, did you rob a bakery?” He let out a small laugh. “Yes. My grandma’s house yesterday.” I pulled out a chair and sat beside him. Taking a sip of my coffee, I asked, “Did you leave her anything?” I grabbed a piece of toast with avocado spread on top. “She doesn’t need all those sweets,” he said with a smile, reaching over to pour more coffee into my cup. I shook my head. After finishing breakfast, I moved to grab my bag when I saw the watch I’d bought for him. I’d never gotten the chance to give it to him; I hesitated before pulling out the box and sliding it across the
Chapter 57 Quashawn I was still trying to figure out a way to get myself out of going to the gala with Fafane, but everything I came up with sounded weak even to me. So I could only imagine how quickly she would see through it. She had already given me a weird look when she first told me about the invitation. Damn it, I pushed a frustrated hand through my hair. I couldn’t get the happy look on her face when she saw the invitation out of my head. I knew she was going to that gala no matter what I said, and I definitely couldn’t disappoint her by refusing to go. But going meant I had another problem to deal with, one I’d created myself. Leaving the shop, I got into my car and drove to Grandma’s house. As soon as I walked through the door, I found her in the kitchen adding sugar to a mixing bowl. “That’s too much sugar,” I warned her. Without even looking up, she said, “Did you come here to order me around? If so, walk right back out.” “Nana, you need to watch the sugar. I’m pr
Chapter 56 Fafane By the time I made it to the hospital, Marie was sitting up in bed with Caleb beside her, talking quietly. “How are you doing?” I rushed to her side. “I’m fine.” She gave me a small smile. “You didn’t have to come.” “Of course I had to come see you.” I looked her over, making sure she really was okay. She had a few bruises, but seeing her sitting there awake and talking allowed some of the pressure in my chest to ease. I closed my eyes for a second. “You were attacked because of me.” Marie was already shaking her head. “It wasn’t your fault” “Stop blaming yourself,” Caleb interrupted. “Whoever planned this is responsible. Not you.” I knew they were right. But knowing something and believing it were two different things; I couldn’t shake the feeling that because I helped Marie get that contract, someone was sending a message. And there was only one person I could think of: Tessa, but was she really bold enough to have Marie attacked over a contract? I nodde
Chapter 55 Quashawn I walked back into the garage, sipping on a smoothie I picked up on the way back from Fafane’s office. My steps were light, and my mood was a little better. At least I got her to admit there was a chance those people weren’t really her family. It wasn’t a direct admission, but it was something. “Keep my good mood, Malik,” I said as I walked into the small office and found him sitting behind the desk. “You know I’m not one of your employees, right?” he asked without looking up from the papers in front of him. I ignored him and took the chair across from the desk. He kept going through the documents until he finally leaned back. “Well, unless Granny is living a double life, I couldn’t find anything incriminating on her.” I raised a brow. “So what you’re telling me is Granny is clean?” “It appears so.” He placed several documents in front of me, then pointed to one. “This is a trust her husband left her before he died. He also created a separate trust for yo
Chapter 54 Fafane This morning had been nothing but hell; I couldn’t focus on anything. Grandma’s reaction last night kept bothering me, and the warning I got from Mother to leave Quashawn while he and Dad went off to have their little talk was still sitting heavily on my mind. Something told me they were planning something. Something that involved getting me away from Quashawn and somehow pushing me back toward Henry. But why? Why were they so determined to get me back with him? I didn’t understand it, and that was one more thing bothering me today. I had barely settled into my office when the phone on my desk rang. I picked it up. “Yes?” My assistant’s voice came through. “Your husband, Mr. Baker, is here to see you.” I frowned. Quashawn? “Let him in. Thanks.” I hung up, already wondering why he was here. Did something happen? Before I could run myself into the ground with questions, the door opened, and Quashawn walked in with both hands filled with bags. My eyebrows sho
