Chapter Six—Gianna
Justin’s tongue rolled right across his lips. It was good whiskey too. Ignoring the ongoing chattering from the other customers at the restaurant whose eyes clearly glanced over at his corner, he grabbed a napkin from the other side of the table and wiped his face clean. It was a good suit too, one of his favorites, which his ex wife had soiled with expensive whiskey. He didn’t think she had it in her, to pull off something as bold as throwing a drink on his face. She was different—Gianna was definitely different. Justin rose to his feet and walked out of the restaurant, without so much paying his behind a glance and made straight for the door which was opened for him by the driver. Nico, the ever drowning chauffeur pursed his lips tightly, his boss was clearly in a bad moon. Thinking about it almost made him chuckle softly, when was the ever arrogant Justin Santiago not in a bad mood?? “Where to boss?” He finally mustered the courage to ask. Justin, soiled in booze and despair, sent his driver a death glare seeing the amused glint in his eyes, he would think it was funny until he got a termination letter the next morning. Sighing deeply, he looked down at his watch and muttered, “Just take me home.” Gianna paced back and forth in a stance of panic, biting her nails, a usual habit when she was tensed. Seated across her on the sofa was Aiden, with a skeptical look on his face watching his friend tense over a minuscule matter. “You’re bugging me Gianna.” He finally spoke. She turned her head sharply to his side, “You don’t know Justin like I do Aide”, resuming her pacing, “Oh God he’s gonna sue me.” “He’s not going to do anything,” Aiden rolled his eyes, got up and strode over to her kitchen where he poured himself a glass of water, “He stalked you remember?” “Yes but I have no proof he did so!” She lashed out, frustrated to be even put in a situation like it, “He has proof I poured drinks on him and he’s definitely going to use it against me! This wasn’t the plan Aiden!!” She plopped herself down on the couch and placed a hand over her face, a stance of even more frustration. The plan was to return and take him down with a vengeance, whilst doing it in the shadows—a plan of surprise, it was perfect in every way. Justin just had to ruin everything, just as he ruined her life and send her family into crippling debt. Thinking about it made the hatred in her heart grow even yonder, suddenly her regret didn’t hold an ounce of weight over her anymore. She say upright, face devoid of fear as she turned to Aiden who remained by the kitchen counter. “You know what?” She shrugged, “I don’t care if he sues me. I’m prepared to fight it.” Aiden’s eyes beamed with admiration, “Atta girl.” Gianna smiled, “What’s the next plan?” ******** The apartment was even more desolate than he thought it was. He ignored the lights, not bothering to turn it on and headed straight for his study where he grabbed another bottle of whiskey. A crevice of sleep didn’t touch his eye lids, they were as wide as ever when he poured himself another glass since he down the first one in a second. Gianna. He couldn’t stop thinking about her and the events of today. He expected someone else to be his enemy—wanted someone else to be his top rival, and not his ex wife. Seeing her at the conference room, eyes void of soft emotion towards him sent a spiral of chills down his spine which he didn’t even know he had. The investigator he hired was slow to find any information about her, not even where she disappeared to or the whereabouts of the rest of the Lawson family. It was like she just appeared out of nowhere, with the sole aim of taking him down. It was amusing in a way, seeing the spark of anger in her eyes. He definitely didn’t think she had it in her, his soft spoken ex wife who trembled at the mere sight of trouble, the same Gianna who always bursted into tears whenever he came home from work late. He rubbed his cheek gently, reminiscing the slap, she had definitely changed. “Damn it Gianna”, he murmured, almost drunk, now on his third glass, “I can’t believe I have to take you down.” Slowly he got up, with the bottle in his hands now, with no need for a glass anymore and staggered towards his room. He was in a disheveled state, as he plopped down on the edge of the bed. His eyes traveled towards the huge photo book, carefully placed on the chest of drawers right across him and he frowned. His wedding photo book. He hated the stupid thing, a reverie of him telling Gianna it was a dumb idea to pass it down to their kids if they ever had one crossed through his mind. He was right, it was a dumb idea and he always hated the damned photo book, but for some reason he couldn’t throw it away. It was the last piece of memory of his past. A reminder to never make the same mistake again—marriage. He took one last gulp from his bottle and his body finally relented as he plopped right onto the folds of his bed. Sleep finally overtook him, not caring if the dreams of his ex wife was bound to haunt his night. ********** The sound of a blaring phone blasted through Justin’s ears the next morning. He groaned in his sleep, ignoring the throbbing headache that was oncoming when another phone call came blasting again . He jolted to his feet finally. Stifling a yawn, he looked down at his pathetic self. Still clad in his booze-soiled clothes from last night, his socks reeked of a pungent smell of dejection and fatigue which made his nose twitch. His brows furrowed deeply as he heard his phone ring again, his head throbbed badly from hangover as he reluctantly picked it out from his pocket. “This had better be—- “Uhh sir,” He heard the unsure voice of his secretary, “You might want to come in. There’s someone here to see you.”Chapter Sixty-Nine—Painful secrets from the past(8) Monster… You’re a monster… You’re an evil disgusting monster.. You’re an evil, disgusting blood sucking monster.. He heard the words ring in his head as she pointed at the door for him to leave. Suddenly, the image of a baby in it’s mother’s arms, suckling on her teat flashed through his mind. “You should kill me.” He said, resigning to his fate. “What?” Gianna stared at him, wide eyed and thinking he was crazy. “I don’t deserve to live. You should kill me and get it over with.” He said, he still wouldn’t look her in the eye. “Just leave Justin.” She sniffled, the sorrow just too much to bear with him around. “I will.” He said, his nostrils all clogged up, “Gianna what can I do?” She raised her hands in mock surrender, “What? So you can feel better about yourself?!” He shook his head, “No, for you to hate me less. What can I do?” “N
Chapter Sixty-Eight—Painful Secrets from the Past(7) “I’m busy.” She said, “Get out.” “I don’t care.”He replied and pushed her aside, forcing his way inside. “Hey!” She cried out we she followed him in, “I thought I restricted from enter— “I bought the fucking building!!” He yelled back. He’d been crying, she noticed the tear lines on his cheek. Like a wounded animal, Justin glared at Rowan Maldov who’d just rose to his feet. His eyes trailed to the bottle of wine, and then the half eaten baking dish of chicken pot pie. Bastard, he thought as he lunged at Maldov punching him hard on the face. Gianna screamed, Rowan plummeted to the ground and Justin flexed his fingers. He’d been wanting to do that since last night. “What is wrong with you?!” She cried out. Maldov finally regained composure, the corner of his lips bruised and his gum bloody, he was seething, “What the fuck Santiago?!” Justin spat, “I warned you to stay
Chapter Sixty-Seven—Painful Secrets From the Past (6) “Rowan??” Aiden stood at the door, with a bag of groceries in one hand and takeout in the other, the smell of chicken pot pie wafted into the air, “Who the hell is Rowan?” Shit. Gianna squirmed, “What are you doing here?” He frowned, “What, am I—“ He nudged his head to the side to get a glimpse of her apartment, “Are you making dinner?” She still had her apron on, she quickly loosened from her neck and waist, a frantic effort alerting Aiden that something was aloof, “Yeah I…I just wanted to make a quick meal.” Smiling now, he ushered himself in, “It’s a good thing I came then. I’m starving.” This wasn’t good, she panicked. There were already complicated with Aiden enough, saying she wasn’t ready and all , but here she was having dinner with another man. Rowan was going to arrive in a few minutes, turning a simple dinner into a convoluted mess. She was in deep trouble, her face went
Chapter Sixty-Six—A Painful Secret From the Past(6) Justin’s heart sank low as Diaz returned hours later with the hospital files, placing it on his desk, “I better not lose my job over this Santiago.” “You won’t.” He muttered, “I promise.” “Well then.” The detective made a salute, “I better be on my way.” “Did you read the contents?” Justin asked. Diaz smiled, “A man knows when not to snoop around Santiago.” ********* Gianna chucked the remaining photos into the fireplace which crackled after being fed anew, the brooch still remained unmelted, with his silver furnishings all burned off leaving a copper ring. She frowned seeing as the metal remain untouched. She heard her phone buzz. A message from Rowan; ‘“Still up for Belize??’” Charming bastard. She thought. Then a reply; ‘“I still haven’t forgiven you.”’ Silence. Then his message popped in again; ‘“How about Dinner at your place?”
Chapter Sixty-Five—A Painful Secret From the Past(5)THREE YEARS AGO(Months After the divorce) “I said I wanted a cappuccino and not fucking black Asphalt!” The angry customer yelled at Gianna. She was tired. It wasn’t his order and she made that very clear. He still went ahead to take it from her, and now was complaining about it being too black for his taste. She was angry at world, more so she was angry at herself for bringing on such a misfortune. There was no greater urge than to topple the cup of black tar over the customer’s delirious face, instead sue forced a smile, “I apologize for the mixup. I’ll be back shortly with your correct order.” As she made to grab the mug he slapped her hands off, “Leave it be. Get me a round of eggs, one over easy and the other sunny side up.” Her patience was wearily thin, “Coming right up sir.” She walked away, hearing him call her a stupid bitch from behind. She let out a deep breath as soon as she shut
Chapter Sixty-Four—A Painful Secret From the Past(4) Justin found it hard to focus at the office. Gianna’s last words still haunted him deeply. Until you lose a child. What did he mean? He grazed through the now growing stubble on his chin, ignoring his financial adviser who was busy talking about the company’s revenue shares. Until you lose a child. Was she?- No that wasn’t possible, he thought. They were always careful through the course of their marriage. She’d always wanted to have one, same as him, but things were too tight and he was too busy. The first few months of their marriage was one filled with lovemaking, for a moment he thought he would have an erectile dysfunction at the rate they were going. The last few months were one spent with seldom love making, but when they did it was magical. No woman tested his senses like Gianna did, made his loins go berserk at the mere scent of her. He cringed, looking down at the bulge in hi
