But when billions of dollars mysteriously vanish from Sunrising Company, every piece of evidence points to her. Branded a thief and publicly humiliated, Alice is cast aside by the only man she ever trusted. Divorced, disgraced, and left with nothing, she disappears without a trace. Years later, Alice returns as a powerful, independent businesswoman with one goal: to uncover the truth and make everyone who betrayed her pay. But the closer she gets to exposing the mastermind behind the conspiracy, the more dangerous the game becomes. William soon discovers a devastating truth—his ex-wife was innocent all along. The woman he condemned was protecting secrets that could destroy an empire. Now, burdened by guilt, he is determined to win her back. But Alice is no longer the woman who begged to be believed. As enemies close in, old feelings reignite, and a charming billionaire offers her the future she deserves, Alice must make an impossible choice: forgive the man who shattered her heart, choose the one who has never stopped believing in her, or walk away from love forever. In a world where betrayal is currency and trust is the most dangerous investment, revenge may be easy—but forgiveness could cost everything.

Chapter 1

The Woman I Married

Alice was knee-deep in her quarterly report analysis when two guards materialized in her doorway. They just stood there, blocking out the sunlight streaming through her office window.

"Mrs. Houston, the board requires your attention." The guard's tone was flat, like he was announcing lunch specials.

"What's going on?" she asked.

Neither answered. They escorted her through headquarters. At first she thought she was imagining it — a secretary who always waved now stared intently at her monitor. A manager she'd shared lunch with last week had his back to her, avoiding her gaze.

Whispers erupted. Louder each second, transforming from casual office buzz into something sharper. Soon people stopped pretending to work and just openly gawked.

The elevator ride to the top floor stretched on, an eternity. When the doors hissed open, the conference room was already packed with directors and senior executives. Nobody looked up when she entered.

At the head of the gleaming table was William. The warmth that had awakened her that morning was gone. Only someone carved from ice remained.

"Have a seat." Short. Brisk. Like she was a stranger.

She sat. Her instincts screamed that something was gravely wrong.

Mr. Frederick rose — the company attorney who'd once called her "the most honest professional he'd ever met." He laid a thick folder on the table.

"Following our investigation," Frederick announced, "several billion dollars are unaccounted for. We believe these funds were systematically diverted."

He turned the folder. Bank statements. Wire transfers. Authorizations. She skimmed in a daze.

"The receiving account has been traced directly to Mrs. Alice Walter Houston."

The room exploded.

"I can't believe it!"

"She almost cost us everything!"

"I knew something was wrong!"

"No." Her voice was barely a whisper. "I would never."

Her fingers trembled as she reached for the folder. Her name. Account numbers. Transfers going back over a year. The signatures looked perfect, and the codes felt too familiar.

"This isn't possible," she breathed.

"It is," a director thundered, slamming his fist. "Forensic accounting is precise."

Another stood, pointing. "We trusted you! You nearly bankrupted this company!"

"I didn't!" Alice's voice cracked. "Someone framed me! I've never stolen a penny!"

The roar intensified.

"Explain the transfers!"

"The account has your name!"

"Stop playing innocent!"

She searched every face, desperate for even a sliver of belief. There was none.

"Mr. Frederick," she turned to him, pleading, "you know me. Please —"

Frederick adjusted his glasses and looked away.

"Mr. Frederick?" Her voice quivered.

He thumbed through the papers. "Alice, the evidence is... substantial."

Her heart sank. "Substantial? You think I did this?"

"I'm saying the evidence points toward your guilt."

A hollow laugh escaped her. Evidence. That's all they saw. Not years of dedication. Not sleepless nights. Just paper.

Her gaze drifted to William. He hadn't spoken a word.

"William," she whispered.

The room held its breath.

"You know me," she said, forcing steadiness. "You know I wouldn't do this."

His gaze didn't waver. "I knew the woman I married."

Past tense. Already past tense.

"What does that mean?" Her voice cracked.

William leaned forward. "It means I don't recognize you anymore."

She searched his eyes, clinging to hope. Somewhere behind that ice, the man she loved had to still exist. But there was nothing.

"After everything we've been through," she asked, a tear tracing down her cheek, "you really believe I'd betray you?"

He glanced away. His jaw tightened. But when his eyes met hers again, they were still cold.

"The company was almost destroyed."

"I didn't do it!"

"Then prove it." Flat. Empty. "Prove your innocence."

She froze. How could she prove something she didn't understand? Someone had built this case with precision. Every detail was in place. But she was completely alone.

Another director slid a document across the table — her immediate termination from Sunrising. The company she'd built.

"This is insane," she breathed.

William rose. The room went silent.

"Alice Walter Houston, you are hereby suspended from all positions within Sunrising Company."

Suspended. The word echoed. She'd lost their trust. Her career. And she knew — she was losing William too.

"William..." The word choked in her throat.

For a flicker, she saw something in his eyes. Pain? Regret? Then it was gone.

"Security will escort you out."

She stared at him like a stranger. The man who'd pledged his loyalty was orchestrating her downfall without a single question. She gripped her handbag and headed for the door. Halfway there, she paused.

"One day," she said, not looking back, "when the truth comes out, you'll remember this moment. You'll remember what you chose."

No one answered. The door swung shut.

Out in the hallway, everything had changed. Coworkers who'd rushed to greet her now stepped aside like she was infected. The guards stared straight ahead. The receptionist — who she'd brought coffee for every Thursday — conspicuously looked away.

Pictures on the wall chronicled milestones she'd been part of, celebrations she'd believed in. Now they felt like a cruel joke.

The elevator doors closed, and finally, Alice let the tears flow. It wasn't the company that broke her. It was William. The man who'd been her world. He'd chosen a lie over her. Just like that.

Deep in the building, behind a door that didn't exist, a figure watched her exit on a bank of monitors. A slow smile spread across his lips.

His opening move was complete. But this was just the beginning.
