Rustling came down the line. Papers, a chair pushed back. Theo pictured Vincent still at his desk, this late.

"Say that again."

"I found her, Uncle. Adalyn. She's in Claremont."

"Claremont," Vincent said it like a place he'd never heard of. "What's she doing there?"

"Running a café." Theo hesitated. "She has a daughter."

Vincent's breath caught, just for a moment. Theo put it down to shock. He had felt the same thing the first day he’d seen her here.

"A daughter," Vincent said quietly. "How old?

THEOPlease, stay. Don’t go.Hearing her say those words did something to his heart. He almost told her he wasn’t planning on letting her slip away from him anymore. Instead, he held her closely, his hands holding her waist firmly. They were so close that he could smell the sweet smell of vanilla. Just as she had always smelled. “Dancing with you wasn’t part of this date, you know?” Her voice pulled him out of his thoughts."No, it wasn't," he murmured, "but I've learned not to waste a chance when it's put in front of me."She pulled her head back and tilted it slightly to look up at him. “Just like you kissed me the other day?”As she mentioned it, his gaze went straight to her lips. Full and painted with red lipstick that only made them more tempting and inviting. The memory of his mouth on hers flooded him, and all he wanted to do was to close the distance and taste her again.“Keep looking at me like that and I might do it again.” His gaze slowly returned to hers.Being around A

ADALYNShe was.Two words, spoken so quietly that Adalyn almost didn't hear him. But she didn't miss the way he looked at her when he said them, as though the candle between them was the only thing stopping him from reaching across the table. Her heart skipped, stumbled, then took off.Who was this woman? And why did she feel a sting of jealousy over someone she had never met?She reached for her glass of sparkling water just to give her hands a job. "She sounds… unforgettable.""She was." Theo's jaw tightened, then eased, as if he had remembered where he was. "Forgive me. That's hardly a first-date conversation.""Is this a first date?"The corner of his mouth lifted. "Isn't it?"Heat crept up her neck. She was saved by the waiter, who arrived with their plates and set them down like he was handling something sacred. The sight of the salmon gave her a welcome distraction, letting her finally break eye contact and swallow the lingering tension from moments ago. Theo’s steak was cooke

THEOTheo stood before the mirror in his bedroom… studying the way he looked. He wore a beige, pinstriped shirt with an open collar. The shirt was tucked into tailored dark brown trousers secured with a brown belt. Giving him the quiet confidence of a man who didn’t need to try too hard to command attention. It's just dinner, he told himself. His reflection did not believe him.He had looked up the best restaurant in Claremont and had found The Platter. He had made the reservations himself and didn’t ask for a table. He had asked for a special table, one where no one would disturb them. The manager had assured him it would be perfect. He didn’t need assurance, so he had told the manager to make it happen.Theo exhaled slowly. He was the man who made even the greatest of men tremble, not a man who got nervous. And yet his heart was pounding like a boy's.He picked up his keys and left. The porch light was already on when he arrived at Adalyn's house. He sat in the car for a moment, han

THEOTheo had closed deals in boardrooms where one word could move markets and he'd never once lost his composure. Then he walked into the garden and his eyes met hers. His breath just vanished from his chest as if he'd been hit. The dress she was wearing was absolutely divine, clinging to her in the most stunning way and making her look absolutely breath-taking. Her chestnut brown hair flowed down in loose waves over her shoulders and her hazel eyes caught the light of the afternoon like little specks of gold. He'd met beautiful women throughout his entire adult life and none of them had ever quite had the effect that Adalyn’s beauty did of making him momentarily forget himself. He controlled his expression as he approached. Control was the one habit he trusted above all others. The dollhouse in his hands had been Heather's headache for four days. His instruction had been simple, he wanted nothing off the shelf. Heather had consulted the best craftsman in New York who had done a ver

Adalyn stood frozen for a couple of minutes, unable to move. Then she finally found her voice.“This is too much, Theo. You didn’t have to do all this.”“But I wanted to.” Theo straightened. ““Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.” Adalyn beamed.Theo gave a brief nod then pointed to the dollhouse. “Where should I put this?” Daisy on the other hand, had already run off to rejoin her friends.“Come with me. I’ll show you where,” Mrs. Green chimed. Theo followed her into the house, but not before turning his head to cast one slow, searing look back at Adalyn. Daniel stood with his fists jammed into his pockets, his eyes blazing as he watched Theo leave.Adalyn watched as the kitchen door closed behind them, wondering who this man really was.“Is there something going on that I need to know about?” Daniel’s voice pulled her from her thoughts.“What do you mean?”“You tell me,” Daniel said, nudging his chin up. “Why would a man you barely know buy an expensive gift for a child he har

ADALYN“I look so beautiful, Mommy,” Daisy said, twirling until her skirt flared into a tiny bell. “Like an angel.”“That’s because you are an angel. My angel,” Adalyn said, leaning down to adjust the princess crown on her head.“And you’re my favorite mommy in the whole wide world.”Adalyn laughed softly. “I’m your only mommy, sweetie.”Daisy giggled, striking a dramatic pose in front of the full-length mirror.Once Daisy was fully dressed, Adalyn took a deep breath and stepped into her own room to get ready. Outside, she could already hear the distant chatter of parents and the excited shrieks of children running across the lawn. The party was starting.Standing in front of her mirror, she looked at how the gown held her slim figure. The dress hugged her waist, falling smoothly over her hips. It had a little flowery detail on the right side that cascaded right down to the hem.She put on some makeup which felt foreign to her as she couldn’t remember the last time she had one on. Fin
