SURPRISE KISS

If anyone had told me just two weeks ago, that I would be standing in a registrar’s office wearing a white dress that cost more than my annual salary, and getting married to Sylas Gold, I would have laughed in their face.

If they had told my parents?

I would have been locked up in a psych ward.

My mother’s rough breaths were the only sounds in the room as the registrar finished calling out our names. I glanced behind me and spotted my father still staring at me in disbelief, like he had forgotten the very act of blinking itself.

Both of them stared at me like I had grown a second head overnight.

“Vera,” my mother whispered from the bench right behind us, she could not care one bit that Sylas could hear her. “You know you don’t have to go through with this, right?”

I swallowed, and kept my eyes forward,

“I do,” I said, quietly, “I have already signed the papers.”

Beside me, Sylas nodded. He stood tall, his posture calm and unshaken. He was dressed in a black, tailored suit that probably, no, most definitely cost more than the value of the entire courthouse.

I could still recall the cost of the dress I was wearing, and it still shocked me to my very core. Who would be dumb enough to spend almost a hundred thousand dollars on a single wedding dress? Apparently, Sylas was. Because he hadn’t blinked an eye when he was offered the bill.

Sylas had one hand rested casually in his pockets, and the other hand clasped mine. His grip wasn’t tight, it was just loose enough that I could even consider it reassuring.

This was a wedding, yes.

But it was also a transaction.

The registrar cleared his throat, “Mr. Gold, Mrs. Gold – please step forward,”

I blinked, still not used to ‘Mrs’ being a part of my name.

My fingers trembled as we stepped forward and I took the pen. I signed my name in one long stroke that was both final and irreversible.

Sylas signed next, his movements were pristine and smooth. I could tell that to him, all of this was nothing more than a routine transaction.

And just like that.

I was married.

There was no music, no exchange of vows, and no kiss.

There was just two people and ink on paper.

My mother surged to her feet the moment we walked forward to reach them. “I still can’t believe this,” she hissed, shaking her head, “What possessed you to get married to him? I wanted you to get into a relationship, not get married after a single date.”

Sylas inclined his head, just slightly, “Mrs. Varon,”

My mother blinked,

And I stepped forward, “I know all of this is sudden,” I said, my voice growing stronger with every word that left my lips, “And I know it sounds insane, but I am fine, I am safe. And this is my decision.”

My mother scoffed, “Did you get married to him just because he is a billionaire?”

I parted my lips, and Sylas beat me to it.

“No,” he said calmly, “Vera married a man who would respect her and protect her boundaries.”

The room went silent,

I felt my body stiffen, my face grew warm as I stared down at my toes. It wasn’t just the words themselves; NO, it was the certainty I could feel behind them.

My father studied Sylas for a long time before nodding, “Words are cheap,” he whispered, “But I will hold you to yours.”

Sylas nodded, held my hands, and before my mom or dad could say anything else, we were out of the courthouse.

We stepped outside and I froze, completely.

Because the world exploded into a flurry of light and activity.

Cameras flashed so violently that it felt like I was in a lightning storm. Shouts, screams and squeals overlapped and voices clawed through my ears.

We were being besieged by the press.

But how?

“Sylas!” One shouted, screaming as he kept on taking burst photos, “When did you decide to get married?”

“Mr Gold!” Another screamed, “How long have you been seeing her? Longer than Sarah?”

“Vera! Mrs. Gold.” I flinched as I heard my name being called by a female reporter, “When did you know he was going to marry you and can you tell us your love story?”

I instinctively stepped back, my heart slamming hard against my ribs. Bodies pressed forward towards us, and lenses were shoved into my face with so much force, I had to step back to avoid them.

Sylas moved immediately.

His arm slid firmly around my waist, and he pulled me to his side with a possesive ease that left no room for doubt for whomever was watching.

And something told me thousands of people were.

His other hand lifted suddenly, and everyone stopped, waiting for him to speak.

“Yes,” he said, his voice both smooth and unhurried, “Vera, here is the love of my life, and… we are married.”

The shouting resumed.

“Is this to avoid the merger?”

“Does Sarah know that you have a wife?”

“Is this a publicity move for Gold International?”

I stiffened,

Everything was happening way too fast for me to realize what was happening, but I was slowly getting it.

Before I could process my words, or move.

Sylas hands came up to cup my cheek, his thumb gently brushed my skin, as though inviting me in.

And then, he leaned down and planted his lips on mine.

It wasn’t rushed or clumsy. It was warm, confident and above all, convincing.

Cameras went wild, and I forgot how or what to think.

When he pulled back, he whispered into my ears, “Trust me, I’ll explain later.”

Guards in black, tailored suits rushed forward and parted the crowds with ruthless efficiency. Doors were forced open, reporters were shoved aside.

A sleek black limousine rolled up to the curb and parked right in front of the courthouse.

Sylas guided me forward, shielding me completely as we moved.

The door opened, and I stepped in with shaky legs and a heart filled with so many questions.

First of all,

What the hell just happened?

“Move to the next phase.”Those words echoed in my head long after Sylas ended the call.I stared at him with furrowed brows, my heart still racing from everything I had seen on screen.“Next phase?” I repeated his words slowly,Sylas did not answer immediately. Instead, he glanced at me with a calm expression, too calm for someone who had just declared what sounded like war to my ears. Then, almost as if considering, he exhaled lightly and shrugged.“What is the next phase?” I asked again, but this time, my tone was harsher. For a second, I thought he would actually explain. He didn’t. Instead, he stepped closer and his presence grounded me in a way I didn’t quite understand.“You don’t need to worry about that,” he said smoothly, “I’ll handle it.”I stared at him, just like that? Did he think that was the answer I was looking for?“That’s it?” I asked, my voice filled with disbelief, “That’s all you are going to tell me? That you are going to handle it?”“Yes,” he replied without he

I only let out a sigh of relief when I heard the elevator close shut behind Sarah. I let out a deep breath.Sylas had assured me that he was going to make sure I was not disturbed again, but somehow, I doubted him. I had seen the crazed look in Sarah’s eyes when she was taken away. Those were not the eyes of a woman who was ever going to listen to being told no.“That…” I exhaled as I pressed my fingers against my temple. “Was more than I ever expected. Is she always that crazed?”Besides me, Sylas was still as calm as ever. “She won’t try that ever again,” he said in a calm tone,“Are you sure?” I asked again,“I am,”I let out another breath. This time, it was slower.“Is that it for today?” I asked, “Or do I still need to meet with some executives?”Sylas did not answer immediately, which I felt was immediately a bad sign.“I would love for it to be over,” he whispered as he turned to face me, “But there is one more thing we need to do, before we can leave.”I let my head fall back

Hours later after I woke up and I have never been more confused in my life.I was currently standing at a charity gala beside Sylas. I had been draped in silks and diamonds that didn’t feel real, but was. Everywhere I turned, cameras flashed brightly and voices called out my name.“Mrs. Gold!” An obnoxious short woman, wearing light blue glasses called out,“How long have you known each other?” another had asked,This was a charity gala and reporters were not allowed on the ball floor itself, but that didn’t stop the reporters from dressing up and acting as if they were there to bid on items instead of harassing me with questions. The only reason why I haven’t snapped at them yet was because I could feel Sylas’ hand on mine, and because he had already warned me about what to expect.Sylas' hand rested warm, he leaned down and murmured, “Smile,”I did perfectly, turning towards the direction he was looking at… and that was when I saw him.Evan.What was he even doing here? And what was

For a moment, everything, including my breathing, stopped.Sarah’s wrist was still caught in Sylas’ grip. My heart hammered violently against my ribs as I watched her hand stop just a few inches away from my face. She had tried to hit me, actually hit me? And if Sylas hadn’t stopped her?I swallowed hard, and my throat went dry. Sarah’s expression twisted, her shock at being grabbed melted into something far uglier. She stared down at Sylas hand wrapped around her wrist with rage in her eyes.“Sylas…” her voice cracked, and her disbelief was laced with hurt, “You are choosing this bitch over me?”He didn’t let go immediately, instead, he tightened his grip till she squirmed a little.“I’m not choosing anyone,” he said calmly, then, his gaze hardened as he pushed her away, “I already did.”Those words landed harder than any slap ever could. Tears began to stream down Sarah’s face as Sylas released his grip on her wrist. She staggered back a step and began to clutch her wrist like it ha

The gates of Sylas' estate were larger than the house I had grown up in, yet, they slid open without a sound. They opened to reveal a long, winding driveway lined with towering trees and perfectly trimmed hedges. My breath caught as I stared out of the limo in disbelief. The estate wasn’t just big, it was excessive.Elegant fountains shimmered under golden lights, and marble statues stood at intervals on every edge. At the very end of the drive was a house that could not be described as a mansion. No, this was a palace. It rose into the evening sky with sweeping balconies, towering windows and stone work so intricate, I knew they must have been here for centuries,In short, the estate looked like it had been pulled straight out of an historical movie. It was only when the car rolled to a smooth stop that I remembered I needed to breathe. Before I could even process what was happening, the car door was opened by an attendant.“Welcome home, Mrs. Gold,” the attendant said with a bow and

The limousine smelled like leather, polish and old money.I sat stiffly at the edge of the plush leather seats, my hands placed gently on my lap like they belonged to someone else. The events of the past few minutes kept on playing in my mind, and the more I relived them, the more I realized I had absolutely no idea why Sylas had acted that way.Outside the car, the courthouse and the reporters had all disappeared behind the tinted glass, but one thing that didn't fade though, was the sound. The sounds of the camera shutters and the screams, all of it was there, but they were all overshadowed by one sound — the sound of Sylas' lips smacking on mine.I shifted, finally gathering enough strength to turn to him.“You kissed me?” I asked, “Why?”Sylas didn’t look surprised, if anything, he looked more composed than ever, his bubbling act was now cleaned up, and in its place was the stoic and smooth visage of a man who knew he had the whole world at his fingertips. He glanced down and loos
