Roxanne's POV

The drop from thirty stories up was a quick way to die, but staying inside that penthouse meant taking a bullet to the brain.

Rain lashed against my face like tiny needles as my fingers scrambled for purchase on the wet aluminum fire escape. The metal ladder rattled violently beneath my weight, slick with oil and autumn sludge. My boots slipped on the second landing, my left knee slamming hard against the sharp grating. A hot line of pain flared up my leg, but I bit down hard on my lower lip until the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth.

I couldn't stop. Not now. Not when every shadow cast by the flickering streetlamps below looked like an executioner waiting to collect.

By the time I hit ground level, sliding down the final rusted bars into a narrow, suffocating alleyway behind Crimson Heights, my lungs were burning. I dragged myself against the slimy brick wall, gasping for air that tasted entirely of exhaust fumes and freezing drizzle. My heavy-duty cleaning jumpsuit was torn at the knee, soaking wet, and freezing cold against my skin.

I pulled my hood down lower, shoving both hands deep into my pockets. My fingers brushed against a small, hard object tucked securely inside the inner lining of my jacket. I pulled it out.

The USB drive.

The tiny black plastic shell felt impossibly heavy, like holding a live grenade by the pin. This little piece of tech contained the raw, unedited security footage of Ethan’s final moments—and the faces of the men who put a bullet through his chest. It was the only insurance policy I had left in a world that had suddenly decided I didn't exist, or worse, that I needed to be permanently erased.

A pair of bright, sweeping headlights cut through the mouth of the alleyway, making me freeze instantly against the wall.

"Check the perimeter. The bio-hazard team's log said a second cart was missing from the service bay. She didn't get far on foot in this weather," a harsh voice barked over a portable police radio.

My heart slammed against my ribs. City police scanners. That meant Victoria Sterling’s family hadn’t just hired private hitmen; they had the actual badge-holders in their pocket. If the cops caught me here, covered in industrial grime, holding a stolen corporate security drive, they wouldn't arrest me. They would write off my death as a tragic alleyway mugging gone wrong.

I turned on my heel and bolted deeper into the maze of downtown’s oldest district.

The rain didn't let up, turning the cobblestone streets into a treacherous skating rink. Every step sent a fresh wave of agony through my bruised knee, and the raw chill was already beginning to seep deep into my bones, numbing my fingers. I tried to pull my thoughts together, desperately searching for a place to hide, a phone to use, a friend to call.

Call who?

My apartment was already compromised. My coworkers at the agency were likely being interrogated or silenced as we speak. I had no family, no savings left after paying off Ethan’s medical debts from months ago—debts he probably fabricated to bleed me dry while he courted a billionaire heiress. The realization hit harder than the cold rain, a hollow, biting ache in my chest that had nothing to do with the weather.

I turned another sharp corner, ducking beneath a rusted metal awning of an abandoned storefront. My vision began to blur around the edges, dark spots dancing in the heavy mist. The exhaustion, the blood loss from my scraped knee, and the sheer terror of the past hour were catching up to me all at once.

My legs gave out.

I slid down the damp brick wall until I hit the concrete, pulling my knees up to my chest. The world spun wildly, the neon lights of the distant avenue bleeding together into long, smeary streaks of red and blue. The cold was absolute now, creeping through my veins, making my eyelids feel like lead.

As the street sounds faded into a dull, distant roar, heavy leather shoes stepped into my line of sight, stopping right in front of my boots. I tried to lift my head, but the darkness rushed in, pulling me under before I could see who was standing above me.

  • The Billionaire's Dangerous Wife   CHAPTER 6

Roxanne's POVThe sharp clink of shattered crystal against imported Italian marble echoed through the suddenly dead-silent ballroom. For a terrifying, suspended second, nobody breathed. The ambient hum of the string quartet died away as the musicians realized their audience was entirely transfixed by the frozen tableau near the champagne tower.Victoria Sterling stood staring at me as if she had just seen a ghost crawl out of an open grave. Her meticulously painted lips parted in a silent gasp, color completely draining from her face until she looked like porcelain left out in the snow. Beside her, her father’s face mottled from a polite flush into a deep, furious crimson. The elderly patriarch of the Sterling empire opened his mouth, struggling to find a veneer of polite diplomacy after being publicly blindsided by the most feared fixer in the city."A wedding?" Mr. Sterling finally managed, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage as he forced his gaze from my face up to Ki

  • The Billionaire's Dangerous Wife   CHAPTER 5

Roxanne's POVThe heavy oak doors of the Grand Astoria Ballroom swung open with a soft, pneumatic hiss, releasing a low wave of muted chatter, classical string music, and the sharp scent of expensive champagne into the foyer.I stood at the threshold, taking a slow, steadying breath that barely registered against the heavy corset of my midnight-blue silk gown. The dress was a custom piece that had arrived at Kiran’s penthouse suite barely two hours ago—a structural masterpiece of deep sapphire velvet and hand-stitched silver threading that molded to my frame like a second skin. Gone was the stained bio-hazard jumpsuit, the heavy rubber boots, and the raw stench of industrial bleach. In their place stood Mrs. Roxy Cross: polished, terrifyingly elegant, and draped in enough diamonds to fund a small municipal government.Beside me, Kiran adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke charcoal tuxedo, his movements completely composed, radiating an aura of dangerous, untouchable authority. He didn't l

  • The Billionaire's Dangerous Wife   CHAPTER 4

Roxanne's POVThe rhythmic beep of the IV monitor felt like a countdown timer ticking away the seconds of my life. I stared at the small black USB drive dangling between Kiran Cross’s fingers, the tiny plastic shell holding the precise digital weight of my destruction—and potentially, my salvation."You know what's on that drive," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy quiet of the high-rise office. I refused to cower, pulling my shoulders back against the leather sofa despite the soreness radiating through my bruised muscles. "If the Sterlings find out I walked out of Crimson Heights with it, they’ll turn this entire city upside down until they find my corpse. And if you keep it, you're holding a ticking time bomb."Kiran didn't blink. A dark, amused glint flickered in his eyes, the expression of a chess grandmaster watching an opponent make a desperate, cornered move. He walked slowly back around his glass desk, tossing the USB drive onto the polished surface with a soft clatter

  • The Billionaire's Dangerous Wife   CHAPTER 3

Roxanne's POVThe transition from the freezing, garbage-strewn pavement of an alleyway to absolute warmth was jarring enough to pull me back from the edge of unconsciousness. My eyelids flickered open, heavy and coated in grit. Instead of the damp concrete and the steady drumming of rain, I was staring up at a coffered ceiling made of dark mahogany wood. The scent wrapping around me wasn't the familiar stench of industrial bleach or rotting city trash; it was expensive—a sharp, crisp blend of crushed cedarwood, dark tobacco, and clean rain.I tried to shift my weight, but my limbs felt like lead weights tied to my bones. A sharp pinch in the crook of my right arm made me hiss. I looked down and saw a clear intravenous line taped neatly to my skin, hooked to a saline bag suspended on a chrome pole beside a floor-to-ceiling glass wall."I wouldn't pull that out if I were you," a deep, gravelly voice cut through the quiet room like a scalpel. My head snapped toward the sound, a fresh wav

  • The Billionaire's Dangerous Wife   CHAPTER 1

Roxanne's POVThe smell of copper and industrial bleach is a combination that never quite washes out of your skin, no matter how many times you scrub under scalding hot water.I adjusted the straps of my heavy-duty respirator, pressing my gloved palms against the cold marble floor of the penthouse. The Crimson Heights building catered strictly to the city's elite—people who bought silence with six-figure checks and disposed of messy problems just as easily. Tonight, my contracting agency had picked up a rush job. Premium pay, zero questions asked. Standard protocol for a high-end bio-hazard cleanup."Just wipe down the primary suite, Roxy," my supervisor’s voice had crackled through the comm-link earlier. "The client wants it ready by dawn."Blood doesn't just pool; it stains. It creeps into the microscopic grooves of hardwood, splatters against imported wallpaper, and tells a violent story long after the bodies have been bagged and hauled away by the authorities. I dragged a heavy-du
