Bella Hale

I cried so much that night my eyes finally stopped producing tears.

By the time the sky began to lighten, there was nothing left. No more sobs. No more shaking. Just a hollow, scraped-out quiet and the dry, burning ache behind my eyes.

I lay on the thin motel mattress staring at the water-stained ceiling, the cheap fabric of the bedspread scratchy against my skin. My dress from the banquet was wrinkled and ruined on the chair. My makeup had long since streaked and dried into something ugly.

I was foolish.

No doubt about it.

I had trusted too easily. Loved too blindly. Signed whatever he put in front of me because I believed the soft way he looked at me meant something real.

Every warning sign I had ignored now felt like a personal failure. The locked study. The late nights. The way he had grown distant while I kept making excuses for him.

I had handed him everything—my heart, my parents’ legacy, my future—and he had used it to laugh at me behind a closed door.

If not for the stranger who found me standing on the side of the road after I left the banquet, I wasn’t sure I would have made it anywhere at all. I barely remembered his face. Only that he had taken one look at me, asked no questions, and helped me into a cab. He even paid the driver. I never got his name.

Without him, I might have kept walking until I disappeared completely.

The motel room still smelled faintly of old cigarette smoke and industrial cleaner.

I sat up slowly.

Every muscle felt heavy. My head throbbed with the kind of exhaustion that sleep couldn’t fix.

For a long time I simply stayed there on the edge of the bed, hands loose in my lap, staring at nothing.

Crying would not give me anything back.

Marcus had made sure of that.

But my father had left sealed documents in the company archives—papers he had told me to protect, papers Marcus was never supposed to control.

If even one of them still existed, it might be a start. A small piece of leverage. Something that still belonged to me.

I showered in lukewarm water, changed into the plain clothes I had bought from a twenty-four-hour store, and left the motel without looking back.

Hale Corporation looked the same as it always had—glass and steel, polished floors, people moving with purpose through the lobby.

I kept my expression blank as I walked toward the elevators.

My body still felt leaden, but my mind had settled into a cold, narrow focus.

Get the documents.

Nothing else mattered yet.

I almost reached the archive floor.

Marcus stepped out of the executive elevator just as the doors opened, perfectly dressed, perfectly composed, as if the previous night had never happened.

The moment he saw me, a concerned smile spread across his face—the same smile he used for cameras and board members.

“Bella.”

He said my name like he still had the right.

“I’ve been looking everywhere for you. You left the banquet without a word. I was worried.”

Several employees were within earshot.

Of course they were.

He always chose his moments carefully.

The urge to slap him rose so fast and so violently that my fingers curled into a fist at my side.

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to drag my nails across that calm, lying face until something real showed underneath.

But a slap was too clean for someone like him.

A man who could sell my mother’s jewelry, sleep with his secretary on our anniversary, and still stand here pretending to be a concerned husband didn’t deserve something as ordinary as a slap.

He deserved far worse.

I kept my voice flat.

“I need to get into the archives.”

Marcus’s smile didn’t falter, but his eyes cooled by a fraction.

“Of course. Later. Right now I need you.”

Before I could step around him, his hand settled on my lower back—warm, familiar, and completely performative.

He guided me away from the elevators with the easy confidence of a man who still believed he owned the space I occupied.

A few employees passed us in the hallway.

Marcus immediately adjusted his expression into something softer, more concerned.

“You disappeared on me last night,” he said, loud enough for them to hear. “I was worried sick. You should have called.”

I tried to shift away from his hand.

He only pressed more firmly, steering me toward the conference wing.

“Our most important investors arrived early,” he continued in the same caring tone. “The waterfront development proposal needs to be presented this morning. You’re the only one who knows the original projections well enough.”

I knew exactly what he was doing.

He wanted me standing in front of powerful men looking exhausted, unprepared, and easy to dismiss.

He wanted a public failure he could later use against me.

We stopped just outside the boardroom doors.

In full view of two assistants and a junior executive, Marcus turned me toward him, cupped my face with one hand, and leaned in as if he had every right.

I stiffened.

His mouth brushed the corner of my lips—not a real kiss, just enough contact to look intimate to anyone watching.

The scent of his cologne made my stomach turn.

I pulled back sharply, but he only smiled like an indulgent husband dealing with a difficult wife.

“There’s my girl,” he murmured, still performing. “Go in and make me proud.”

The urge to shove him away was so strong my hands trembled.

I didn’t.

There were too many witnesses, and I was still too hollowed out and tired to give him the scene he probably wanted.

He opened the boardroom door himself and gestured me inside with that same false courtesy.

“Gentlemen, my wife will be presenting this morning.”

I stepped into the room—

—and stopped.

Three men sat at the far side of the long glass table.

Adrian Kane.

Dominic Kane.

Elias Kane.

They looked up at the same time.

Recognition flickered across their faces, followed by something sharper and far more complicated.

My eyes widened before I could stop them.

They were Marcus’s fiercest rivals. They had spent years opposing every major move Hale Corporation tried to make.

There was no world in which they should have been sitting here as investors waiting for a presentation from me.

So why were they here?

Bella Hale Adrian’s words hung in the cold air of the restroom. “Look who’s finally back.” I tried to pull my wrist free. His fingers only tightened—not enough to hurt, but enough to remind me he had always been stronger. The contact sent an unwanted jolt up my arm, a spark of recognition my body remembered even if my mind wanted to forget. “Let go of me,” I said, my voice still rough. Dominic stepped in on my other side, closing the space until I could feel the heat of him. Elias remained by the wall, but his gaze moved over me slowly, openly, the way it used to years ago when none of us knew how badly things would end. The small restroom suddenly felt airless. “You’re shaking,” Dominic said quietly. His eyes dropped to my mouth, then lower, taking in the ruined state of me without shame. “Did Hale finally show you what he is?” I hated that they could still read me so easily. I hated even more that some buried part of me reacted to their nearness the same way it once had—puls

Bella Hale I don’t remember walking away from the door. One moment I was standing there, listening to the soft, intimate sound of my husband kissing another woman, and the next I was moving down the hallway on legs that barely felt like they belonged to me. My hand was clamped so hard over my mouth that my teeth dug into my palm. It was the only thing keeping the broken sounds inside. My stomach lurched violently with every step. The taste of bile rose hot and sharp in my throat. I swallowed once, twice, but the nausea only climbed higher, twisting tighter until I thought I might actually be sick right there on the marble floor. Five years. The number kept repeating in my head like a cruel joke. Five years of loving him. Five years of defending him when people whispered. Five years of believing that the man I married was real. And the entire time, I had only been a convenient key to my parents’ fortune. A small, broken sound escaped me anyway. I pressed my hand harder against

  • The Billionaire’s Dirty Possession : Their Genius Bride   001

Bella Hale I didn’t know my husband was cheating on me until the night he celebrated five years of fooling me. Five years. That was how long I had loved Marcus Hale. How long I had defended him, trusted him, and convinced myself that no matter what happened, I had chosen the right man. And tonight, surrounded by hundreds of people who believed we were the perfect couple, I was about to discover just how wrong I had been. “Mrs. Hale, a little closer to your husband, please!” I smiled for the camera and moved closer to Marcus. His arm settled around my waist, warm and familiar, pulling me against his side the way he always did in public. The camera flashed. Once. Twice. Again. “Beautiful. Just like that.” I kept smiling. Marcus did too. To everyone watching, we looked perfect. The devoted husband. The elegant wife. The beautiful couple celebrating five years of marriage. I almost believed it myself. Almost. “Five years already,” the man standing beside us said with a la
