Bella POV

The envelope sat on the kitchen table for hours before I touched it.

Caleb had brought it in with the morning mail. He read the sender's name on the forwarding label and set it in front of me without a word. Then he poured two coffees, put one by me, and sat down across the table.

Tom was at school. Grace was outside in the garden with Nadia. We could hear her little screams through the open window every few minutes because she didn't like walking on the uneven grass.

Bella pov Sebastien laughed out loud, a sound that filled the quiet restaurant. "It was awful! She did not know the French words for half the action scenes. She started making up her own French words. They made no sense at all, but she said them with so much confidence that I just nodded along. By the end of the chapter, we were both laughing so hard our stomachs hurt."I smiled, feeling a strange warmth in my chest. "She really loved to laugh, didn't she?""She did," he said softly. "She could find joy in the smallest things. Once, we got lost in a tiny village outside Geneva. It was freezing, and our car broke down. I was furious. I was on the phone shouting at my assistant. I turned around, and your mother had left the car. She was down the road, buying hot roasted chestnuts from an old man and teaching him how to dance the waltz in the snow."I laughed, my eyes watering a little. "In the snow?""Yes," Sebastien said, smiling warmly at me. "She brought me a handful of hot chestnut

  • The Billionaire’s Discarded Bride    Chapter 214: First Meeting

Bella POV"How was your flight from Crestwood?" Sebastien asked."I live in Silverton now," I corrected him gently."And the drive from your house?""It was straightforward," I said.He looked around the room. "The restaurant is very well-chosen.""Thank you," I replied. I did not tell him that I had spent days picking it out.He was very careful with me, waiting patiently as the silence stretched between us. I reached into my bag, pulled out the photograph of Elaine, and placed it gently on the table. I slid it across the white tablecloth toward him.He looked down at the table for a long time before he spoke. When he finally raised his head, his eyes were bright."You have her eyes, Bella. I saw it the moment I walked into the room."I touched the corner of my eye. "I never knew where they came from. Until a few weeks ago, I thought I looked like the Harts.""No," Sebastien said softly, as he touched the photograph."She was twenty-four when this was taken. We were in Geneva. There wa

  • The Billionaire’s Discarded Bride    Chapter 213: Preparing To Meet Him

Bella POVA business meeting came up at the last minute, so I had to delay meeting my father. It felt so strange to sit with that thought. For years, I believed I knew who my family was. Now, I had to face the reality that the man I thought was my father was a stranger, and the woman I thought was my mother was not my mother at all. Because of the sudden work conflict, our meeting was pushed back by a few weeks. But then Sebastien did something I didn't expect. He chose to come see me instead of letting me travel a long distance to France. It felt deeply touching to see him make that kind of effort and sacrifice just to meet me. When I told Caleb about it, he smiled and told me that is exactly what a parent is supposed to do—to sacrifice for their kids. It felt so good to finally witness that kind of care for myself.Once the new date was set, I gave myself exactly one week to prepare. I prepared the way I always did for important things in my life. I did my research, checked my emoti

  • The Billionaire’s Discarded Bride    Chapter 212: Margaret Confronted

Caleb POVI did not tell Bella I was going to see them. I did not ask her permission because I knew she would tell me it was a waste of time. She would have said she was completely finished with Margaret and Richard. She would have been right, too. But I went anyway.Margaret lived in a flat in the north of the city now. It was a decent place, but it was much smaller than the house Richard had owned during the good years of Hart Industries. The building had a doorman, a small lobby with a fake plant, and a slow elevator. I had seen many buildings like this in my career. They were built for people who used to have money and were trying to hide how much they had lost. The doorman called up to her flat. I waited, and Margaret let me in.Richard was there too, I had expected that. He sat in an armchair near the window. He was thinner than the last time I saw him in court. His hair was still combed neatly. He looked like a man trying to keep up appearances when he had nothing else left.

  • The Billionaire’s Discarded Bride    Chapter 211: The Discussion

Bella pov He came in and stopped in the doorway. He looked at the scene, the open envelope, and the note flat on the table. He came over and sat beside me instead of across from me. I handed him the photograph without speaking. He took it and looked at it. He was quiet for a long time. Then he said, "Bella." "I know," I said. "That's" "I know," I said again. He set the photograph down very carefully and looked at it again, then at me. His face held a rare look of complete wonder, as if he was seeing something too big to understand. "She looked exactly like you," he said. "I look like her," I said. "She was first." He was quiet, his hand found mine on the table. "She wrote a note," I said. "For me. She left it with the law firm when she knew she was sick. She wanted me to know I was wanted." My voice stayed flat and calm, which surprised me. "She wanted me to know his name." Caleb picked up the note. He read it slowly, the way he read things that really mattered. When he

  • The Billionaire’s Discarded Bride    Chapter 210: The Envelope

Bella POVThe second envelope arrived the same week as Sebastien's reply. The building management company sent it from my old office address. They added a note to apologize for the delay. The letter had been lost in their files for a month. Before that, a law office in London had been trying to find me for years. The envelope was yellow at the edges and felt soft, the way old paper does. My name was written on the front in handwriting I did not know: Isabella Elaine Hart. I never knew I had a middle name. Margaret had dropped it before my first birthday. The postmark was from Geneva, Switzerland, from years ago.I sat down at the kitchen table and did not even take off my coat.Inside the envelope were three things. The first was a photograph of a young woman at an outdoor party. The camera showed only her. She was laughing with a wine glass in her hand, her head thrown back. She looked completely happy and free. She wore a yellow dress and her dark hair was loose in the sun.She ha
