Ariana ~

The morning light cut sharp angles across the hardwood floor of the master suite, casting long, pale shadows over the edge of the velvet rug. I sat curled up in the corner of the oversized window seat, staring out at the manicured lawns of the estate while the phone pressed tight against my ear.

"I still can't believe you actually let them do this," Julian’s voice murmured through the speaker, low, frantic, and dripping with a bitter edge. "Ariana, you’re legally bound to a monster. Do you have any idea what Ethan Vaughn does to people who cross him? If he finds out you swapped places with your sister... if he finds out you’ve been lying to him since the second you walked down that aisle..."

"Keep your voice down," I whispered back, my fingers gripping the edge of the phone until my knuckles turned stark white. "Please, Julian. I had no choice. My parents would have dragged me through the dirt anyway, and you know how bad the debts were. I'm surviving. That's all."

"Surviving?" Julian scoffed softly on the other end, the frustration bleeding through the line. "You're living in a tiger's cage and calling it a safe house. Tell me you didn't sleep in his bed. Tell me you didn't let him touch—"

The sharp click of the adjoining bathroom door opening cut him off mid-sentence.

Panic seized my chest, cold and paralyzing.

Ethan stepped out into the bedroom, completely wrapped in a dark towel slung low around his narrow hips, his broad shoulders and chest glistening with faint droplets of water from the shower. He looked devastatingly handsome, his damp dark hair swept back from his sharp, rugged face as he reached for a clean shirt on the dresser.

My breath caught. My fingers moved on pure instinct.

"I have to go," I blurted out, my voice cracking before I aggressively hit the red end button, shoving the phone beneath the heavy silk throw pillows just as Ethan turned his head in my direction.

He paused, his obsidian eyes locking onto mine across the sunlit room. A slow, easy smile touched the corners of his mouth, softening the hard, predatory lines of his jaw. He grabbed his dress shirt, shrugging his arms into the sleeves as he walked toward me with long, unhurried strides.

"Who were you talking to so early, gorgeous?" Ethan asked, his voice a rich, low rumble that carried no real anger—just mild, curious amusement as he stopped right in front of the window seat.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I forced a tight, overly bright smile to my face, keeping my hands hidden safely behind my back.

"Nobody," I lied smoothly, though my voice trembled just a fraction. "Just... nobody. A wrong number."

Ethan’s dark brows rose slightly. He leaned down, placing one large, warm hand on the window frame right beside my head, trapping me gently in the space between his body and the glass. He smelled like crisp cedar, clean soap, and expensive cologne—a scent that instantly made my stomach flip with overwhelming guilt.

"A wrong number at seven in the morning?" he teased softly, his gaze dropping to my lips before lifting back to meet my eyes with deep, affectionate warmth. "You look pale. Are you sure you're alright? The wedding exhausted you, didn't it?"

"I'm fine, Ethan. Really," I breathed, praying to every god imaginable that he wouldn't push the issue.

For a second, his gaze narrowed, studying my face with that sharp, analytical intensity that made him a billionaire titan in the boardroom. But then, seeing the genuine panic in my eyes, he let out a soft sigh, dropping the subject completely. He didn't want to interrogate his brand-new bride on their first morning together. He reached out, his thumb gently grazing my cheekbone.

"Alright. I won't press," Ethan murmured, his voice softening entirely. "Stay right there."

He walked away toward the private kitchenette area attached to the suite. A few minutes later, he returned carrying a heavy silver tray, setting it down on the low table in front of the window seat. Freshly brewed coffee, warm artisanal pastries, sliced fruit, and a delicate plate of scrambled eggs.

"Breakfast in bed," Ethan said, flashing a rare, breathtaking smile that made him look less like a ruthless corporate tyrant and more like a man genuinely head over heels in love. "Eat up, Aria. You need your strength. I have an early board meeting downtown, but I'll be back before dinner."

He leaned down, pressing a lingering, tender kiss to my forehead.

"Have a good day at the office," I whispered, my throat tight.

"I will," he replied, turning to grab his tailored suit jacket from the back of the chair, sliding it over his broad shoulders before walking out of the suite, the heavy double doors clicking shut behind him.

The moment the lock turned, the quiet descended on the room like a physical weight.

I sat there for a long moment, staring at the steaming plate of food he had carefully prepared for me with his own hands. The guilt rolled over me in suffocating waves, hot and jagged. He had treated me with such fierce, unwavering devotion—believing with every fiber of his being that I was the woman he had loved for six years. And here I sat, hiding secret phone calls from the man whose name I had just taken under false pretenses.

I pushed the tray away, my appetite completely vanishing.

I scrambled off the window seat and began pacing the length of the massive bedroom. My bare feet padded silently against the expensive rug. Back and forth. Left to right. The silence of the mansion felt oppressive, amplifying every single anxious thought spinning inside my skull.

*What happens when he finds out?*

The question echoed relentlessly in my mind. Ethan Vaughn was a man built on absolute control and ruthless loyalty. The moment he discovered he had been duped—that the sweet, adoring wife sharing his bed was actually the quiet, forgotten shadow twin—his love would turn to ice. He wouldn't just be angry; he would destroy me. He would destroy my entire family.

I stopped pacing by the edge of the king-sized bed, wrapping my arms tightly around my waist as a shiver ran down my spine. I was playing a game with a loaded gun, and every second I stayed in this house, the trigger got a little bit lighter.

Meanwhile, miles away in a sun-drenched, high-end Parisian café, the air smelled of fresh espresso and warm croissants.

Aria Vance crossed her long, slender legs, adjusting her oversized designer sunglasses as she lazily stirred a cube of sugar into her cup. Her phone buzzed loudly against the marble tabletop.

She glanced down at the screen, a bright, triumphant smirk spreading across her perfectly contoured lips.

"Still ignoring your mother's calls?" a smooth voice asked from across the small round table.

Lucas, a wealthy international art dealer she had met on the private flight out of Manhattan, leaned forward, a playful grin on his face as he eyed her over the rim of his champagne flute.

Aria tossed her long, dark-chestnut hair over her shoulder, picking up her phone and silencing the ringtone with a casual flick of her thumb.

"Let her panic," Aria laughed, her voice light and melodic, entirely devoid of a single ounce of care. "My dear, sweet, obedient sister is currently standing at the altar taking my place with the most terrifying billionaire in Manhattan. If Mom is calling, it means the old man's heart medication is working overtime."

Lucas chuckled, shaking his head in mock disbelief. "You actually pulled it off. You left a multi-billionaire standing at the altar with a substitute bride, and you skipped the country with a first-class ticket and zero remorse. Remind me never to get on your bad side, Aria."

"It's not my fault Ethan is blind," Aria retorted, her smile sharpening into something dangerous and calculating. "Besides, let him play house with Ariana for a little while. She gets to wear the diamonds, she gets to live in the penthouse, and she gets to pretend she's me. But when I get back to New York... when I'm good and ready to claim my rightful throne as Mrs. Ethan Vaughn... my dear sister is going to learn very quickly what happens when you borrow what belongs to me."

She took a slow sip of her champagne, her eyes locking onto the busy Parisian street outside, a cold, predatory gleam hiding beneath her glamorous exterior.

"Until then," Aria purred, setting the glass down with a crisp click, "let them play husband and wife. The fall from grace is always so much sweeter when you let them climb all the way to the top first."

Ariana ~The air in the study went completely dead, charged with a sudden, lethal tension. I stood frozen beside the mahogany desk, the confidential manila folder still open beneath my trembling fingertips. Every drop of blood rushed to my head, and my heart hammered a frantic, deafening rhythm against my ribs. I had been caught red-handed snooping through his most secure files. There was no escaping it, no clever excuse left to invent. Ethan didn't shout. He didn't slam the door or storm across the room in a blind rage. Instead, he simply closed the heavy oak door behind him with a soft, deliberate click, locking it with a turn of the brass deadbolt. Slowly, measured stride by measured stride, he walked toward me. His dark obsidian eyes were unreadable, fixed entirely on my face with a terrifying, piercing intensity. When he reached the desk, he didn't look down at the open dossier exposing my secrets. He just stopped mere inches from me, towering over my frame, his jaw locked ti

Ariana ~The digital alarm clock glowing softly on the mahogany nightstand read 6:15 AM. Sunlight was just beginning to filter through the heavy velvet drapes of the master suite, casting long, golden stripes across the floor. In the quiet sanctuary of the bed, Ethan was still fast asleep, one heavy arm thrown securely across my waist, trapping me flush against his warm, solid chest. His breathing was deep and even, his face completely stripped of the ruthless, calculating mask he wore for the corporate world. For a fleeting moment, I wanted to freeze time right here. No security reports. No international background checks. No looming twin sister ready to reclaim her life. Just this morning, and the quiet comfort of being held by him. Carefully, so as not to wake him, I gently lifted his arm away from my waist and slid out from beneath the covers. The hardwood floor was cool against my bare feet as I slipped on a silk robe and tiptoed quietly toward the hallway. My instincts were

"Ariana pov"The heavy click of the bedroom door latching shut sounded like a gunshot in the silent hallway. My heart hammered against my ribs with a frantic, sickening rhythm as I stared at the spot where Ethan had just vanished. *His international security team.* If they pulled a complete, unredacted file on the woman living abroad, they would instantly discover that the person registered under that passport wasn't a distant sibling—it was me. The entire foundation of my stolen life was about to implode, and I had mere hours before the truth caught up to the fiction. Panic surged through my veins, hot and sharp, driving me up from the settee. I hurried down the hall and pushed open the door to the master suite, ready to fight, to argue, to weave another frantic layer of lies just to buy myself a few more days. Instead, the words died instantly in my throat. Ethan had stripped off his suit jacket, tossing it carelessly over the velvet bench. His crisp white dress shirt was unbut

Ariana pov ~The study door clicked open behind me, the heavy wood swinging inward with a slow, deliberate creak. I froze halfway down the upper hallway, my heart slamming violently against my ribs. Ethan’s footsteps on the hardwood were unhurried, yet they carried an undeniable, suffocating weight. When he reached the landing, he didn't pull me into his arms or offer a reassuring smile. Instead, he stepped into my line of sight, his tall frame blocking my path to the master suite. His dark obsidian eyes were utterly devoid of warmth, stripped down to a cold, razor-sharp focus that made my breath catch. "Sit down, Aria," he said, gesturing slowly toward the velvet settee near the window. It wasn't a suggestion; it was an absolute command. I swallowed the lump of dry terror forming in my throat and forced my legs to move, sinking slowly onto the edge of the velvet seat. Ethan remained standing over me, his hands sliding into the pockets of his trousers as he stared down, his jaw lo

Ariana pov~"Right. Just an office file," I echoed, forcing a tight, unconvincing smile as I tried to step back. The words tasted like metal. In my anxiety to brush it off and escape back upstairs, I completely dropped the carefully curated cadence of breathless, dependent compliance that the real Aria always maintained around him. I didn't flutter my lashes, I didn't lean into his touch for reassurance, and worst of all, I spoke with a sharp, defensive snap that belonged entirely to me, not my twin.Ethan didn't let me step back. His fingers tightened slightly around my chin, not enough to bruise, but enough to hold me completely captive. His dark obsidian eyes swept over my face, stripping away the polite facade. The blind, all-consuming adoration that usually clouded his gaze when he looked at me suddenly fractured, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp analytical focus."You're not asking any follow-up questions," Ethan noted, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous whisper that scrape

Ariana ~The minutes ticked by like hours as I paced the length of the master suite, the sound of my bare footsteps muffled by the thick Persian rug. Ten minutes had passed since Ethan walked into his study. Then twenty. The silence of the sprawling mansion felt heavy, suffocating, vibrating with a tense energy that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I couldn't just sit there and wait for the axe to drop. Stepping out into the hallway, I crept down the grand staircase as quietly as possible, keeping to the shadows of the high-vaulted ceiling. Downstairs, the corridor leading to Ethan's private study was dark, save for a thin, sharp sliver of golden light spilling out from beneath the heavy oak door. As I drew closer, the muffled sound of a low, dangerous voice drifted out into the hallway. Ethan was on the phone. "...track the courier down," Ethan was saying, his voice stripped of any warmth, carrying that lethal, controlled fury that always signaled a storm. "I want t
