Celine's POV

Minutes later, I felt the familiar mix of anxiety and anticipation. Tonight, everything would be watched and judged by people of high caliber. I’ll be scrutinized and monitored.

I glanced once more in the mirror, catching my own eyes and letting myself steel my resolve. Whatever tonight brought, I would face it.

The car ride was quiet, except for the hum of the engine and the soft rustle of my dress. Tonight, we were being driven by the same man who’d taken me to Lucien’s mansion after the wedding. Lucien had called him Mateo earlier, and for some reason, even his name made him seem more intimidating.

Mateo looked more like a mafia boss than a driver. I wouldn’t have been surprised if he turned out to be some kind of undercover criminal, hired for protection.

I kept my eyes on the passing streetlights, watching them blur together as I tried to steady my racing thoughts.

“Lucien,” I murmured before I could stop myself. He hummed in response, and I let out a shaky breath

  • The Billionaire’s Fake Bride    Chapter forty one- I Missed You

Celine’s POVLucien was not with me in bed when I woke up. Dread settled in the pit of my stomach as I rifled through the sheets. I got down and cleaned up, then left the room in an equal rush. When I shut the door and headed out, I noticed a woman in black-and-white clothing talking to Matilda. Jere sat on Matilda’s lap, watching as the two women talked. She was probably looking for a job. But as I drew closer to Elara’s room, trying not to be noticed by either of them, I caught a glimpse of what they were saying.“It’s such a shame, Lily. You were one of the few maids that I actually liked,” she said in a sad voice. I blinked, confused. Lily? “Well, if you ever need your job back, our doors are open.”Lily bowed slightly, then walked straight toward the exit. That was when I noticed the tote she was hanging on her shoulders. Before she crossed the threshold, she turned around and spotted me. I was still stunned by the fact that she was leaving, but as she looked at me, she smiled s

  • The Billionaire’s Fake Bride    Chapter Forty - Trouble

Celine's POV I push past my fear and step into the restaurant, which appears deserted—save for an old man near the window, nursing what is surely a now-cold cup of coffee, completely unbothered by the emptiness around him.I make a beeline for the back booth where I spot Enzo, and an alarm immediately goes off in my head. He’s seated in the corner, tucked away where the booth is partially hidden from the rest of the restaurant. The tables are arranged in a neat line pattern, which makes our spot even more secluded. Not that it matters, there’s barely anyone here to begin with.“You made it,” Enzo says slowly. “For a second, I thought you wouldn’t show. That would not have been… pleasant.”I ignore the implication in his voice and slide into the seat across from him.“What do you want, Enzo?” I ask flatly, not interested in playing games. I came here for one reason only, to set things straight with this unhinged man, and that’s exactly what I will do.“Straight to the point, I see.”

  • The Billionaire’s Fake Bride    Chapter Thirty Nine- One Last Secret

Celine's POV Other than the day I stopped Lucien from confessing his feelings—when he almost said something I strongly believe was ‘I love you’, today is the scariest and most uncomfortable day of my life.It feels like a countdown to my doom, or something equally comically terrifying.I watch Lucien eat the food I made in silence, his hand resting on my thigh like it always does. Both my legs are draped over his lap, my nerves refusing to settle. Only now do I regret not slipping something into his meal to knock him out until I’m back from the city, back from wherever that psychopath asked me to meet him.I debate just telling Lucien everything right now. Confessing it all. But how would it even sound? His thumb circles my thigh absentmindedly, and I look up at his handsome face—beautiful long lashes framing those grey eyes that make my knees weak every single time he looks at me. There’s no hiding it anymore. I’ve fallen for this man. Completely. But at what cost?My chest tightens

  • The Billionaire’s Fake Bride    Chapter Thirty Eight - No Longer the Substitute

Celine's POV My pace quickened as I grabbed her by the shoulder. Why was she here? I thought she was out of town, she had been in town the whole time.“Celeste?”She spun around, and I was faced with a woman who most definitely wasn’t Celeste. She glared at me, and I quickly jerked my hand away, mortified.“Are you crazy?” she asked sharply, her voice edged with agitation.“I’m so, so sorry,” I apologized quickly. “I thought you were someone else.”She sneered, then let loose a string of what I was sure were curse words in Spanish, sharp and heated. She shoved her cart past me and walked away without another glance.I let out a shaky sigh, my shoulders slumping, but that feeling I’d been trying to ignore crept back in again.Like someone was watching me.I mean, I was in a public space, surrounded by people, carts, noises, but it felt… uncomfortable. Strange.I turned around. My eyes met a familiar set of fierce brown eyes. They looked nothing like the first time she had called me th

  • The Billionaire’s Fake Bride    Chapter Thirty Seven- Misery and Mystery

Celine's POV I was pacing the room when Lucien walked in. It took him a minute before he finally looked at me, and his features softened.“Hey,” he said with a small smile. He has been smiling a lot lately, that’s for certain. I tried to return his smile, but it came out as a withering sneer that could scare bandits away.He walked towards me, and I took a tentative step back. He seemed to have missed the movement; he cupped my cheeks and kissed my forehead.“Want to take a bath together?” he asked with a grin I know all too well. I stayed quiet for a second. He looked so good and equally normal in his black polo and pants, like a hot jock or something, rather than his usual serious, suit-to-the-brim business man appearance.I shook my head and stepped away at the same time he started to take off his shirt. His body—oh God—that defined biceps made my mouth water as they strained to his movements.“No, you can go ahead,” I said, averting my gaze. He frowned, his jaw ticked, and I kne

Celine’s POVAva’s words rang in my ears like the noise of a stubborn, persistent bee that was bent on stinging you no matter how much you try to ward it off.“So the room I cleaned out is for Celeste.” She smiled. Lucien’s hand stiffened beneath mine. For a second—just one damned second—he didn’t move. His jaw tightened, a muscle jumping beneath the skin, and I felt the shift in him instantly. The storm brewing behind his eyes was unmistakable. He was furious. As much as I want her to be put in her place, I still don’t want this to get out of hand. So much could happen in such little time. She could shove a scandal down our throats if Lucien isn’t careful.“No,” he said flatly. Ava blinked, lashes fluttering in feigned surprise.“No?”“You’re not moving into my room,” Lucien continued in a cold voice, “and you’re not rearranging my house without my consent.”Her lips parted as though she hadn’t expected resistance. Then she smiled very slowly and tentatively.“I was only thinking of
