Adrian read the message again.

ASK SAMUEL WHY HE NEVER TOLD YOU ABOUT AMELIA.

He slipped his phone into his pocket.

Elena noticed his expression.

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

“Adrian, we've promised not to hide things from each other anymore.”

He hesitated before showing her the message.

Elena read it twice.

“Samuel?”

“Apparently, he knows something about my mother.”

“But why would he keep it from you?”

“That's what I'm going to find out.”

Charles watched them from behind his desk.

“Be careful who you trust, Adrian.”

Adrian turned towards him.

“You're the last person who should give me advice about trust.”

He took Elena's hand, and they left the study with Lily.

But the message followed him throughout the journey back to the mansion.

Who was Samuel really protecting?

---

Samuel was in the mansion's library when Adrian arrived.

He was examining several documents spread across a large table.

Adrian walked in without greeting him.

“How long have you known my mother?”

Samuel looked up.

His expression changed immediately.

“Who told you?”

“So it's true.”

Samuel closed the folder.

“Adrian, there's something you need to understand.”

“I've spent my entire life being told what I should understand. I want answers.”

Samuel looked towards Elena.

“Can we speak privately?”

“No,” Adrian replied. “She's my wife. Whatever concerns my mother concerns her too.”

Samuel sighed.

“Alright.”

He opened the folder and removed an old photograph.

It showed three people standing outside a building: Amelia, Samuel as a young man, and a woman Adrian didn't recognise.

Adrian picked it up.

“Where was this taken?”

“At the Vale residence. About thirty years ago.”

“Why were you with my mother?”

Samuel looked down.

“Because Amelia was my friend.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“You knew her?”

“Yes.”

“And you watched me grow up without telling me?”

“I was asked not to.”

“By whom?”

Samuel paused.

“By Amelia herself.”

Adrian shook his head.

“That doesn't make sense.”

Samuel leaned forward.

“Your mother knew Charles was planning to use your identity to settle the inheritance dispute. She came to me because she needed someone who could protect you without attracting Alexander's attention.”

Elena frowned.

“Why didn't she take Adrian away herself?”

“Because Charles was watching her. Every move she made put Adrian at risk.”

Adrian stared at the photograph.

“So you helped hide her?”

Samuel nodded.

“For a while.”

“Where is she now?”

“I don't know.”

---

Samuel walked towards a cabinet and unlocked a small compartment.

He removed a sealed envelope.

“Amelia left this with me shortly before she disappeared.”

Adrian took it.

His name was written on the front.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

My dear Adrian,

I don't know when you'll read this, but I hope the world has been kinder to you than it was to me.

There are things about your birth that I couldn't explain when you were young. Your father made choices that affected everyone around us, and I refused to let you become another bargaining tool.

Samuel knows part of my story. He helped me when I had nowhere else to turn. Please don't blame him for keeping my secrets.

But there's one thing I need you to know.

Your father was not the only person who wanted you hidden. Someone in the Blackwood family wanted you erased completely.

That person knew about the original declaration before Jonathan did.

Find the woman who signed the second agreement.

She knows why I disappeared.

With all my love,

Amelia.

Adrian lowered the letter.

“Who signed the second agreement?”

Samuel looked uncomfortable.

“I believe it was Victoria.”

Elena immediately shook her head.

“Victoria?”

Samuel nodded.

“But I don't think she acted alone.”

---

At that moment, Richard entered the library.

“Have you seen Jonathan?”

Samuel turned.

“No. Why?”

“He left the mansion about an hour ago. Nobody knows where he went.”

Adrian frowned.

“Did he say anything?”

Richard shook his head.

“He only left a message.”

He handed Adrian a folded note.

It contained one sentence:

I'M GOING TO FIND THE PERSON WHO SIGNED THE SECOND AGREEMENT.

Elena looked at Samuel.

“Victoria.”

Richard shook his head.

“Victoria isn't at the mansion.”

“Where is she?” Adrian asked.

“I don't know. But I found something in her room.”

Richard placed a small key on the table.

It was attached to a metal tag bearing the number 317.

Samuel immediately recognised it.

“That's the archive key.”

Adrian looked at him.

“What archive?”

“The old Blackwood family archive. Alexander closed it years ago.”

“What's inside?”

Samuel looked towards the door before answering.

“The documents nobody was supposed to find.”

---

They reached the archive shortly before midnight.

The room was beneath the eastern wing of the mansion. Its entrance was concealed behind an old wooden panel.

Richard inserted the key.

The lock opened.

Inside were shelves filled with boxes, photographs and old family records.

Elena switched on her phone's flashlight.

“Where do we start?”

Samuel pointed towards a cabinet marked SECOND AGREEMENTS.

They searched through several folders until Adrian found one bearing Amelia's name.

He opened it.

The first page contained a list of conditions.

The second page carried two signatures.

Victoria Blackwood.

And beneath it, another name.

DANIEL BENNETT.

Elena froze.

“Daniel signed this?”

Richard took the document.

“What was he agreeing to?”

Adrian read the first paragraph aloud.

“Transfer of parental responsibility and protection of the original heir…”

He stopped.

A second paragraph explained that Adrian would remain under the Blackwood name, while his biological identity would be concealed until the inheritance dispute was resolved.

Elena looked confused.

“Why would Daniel agree to that?”

Samuel turned the page.

There was a handwritten note.

Daniel will protect the child. Victoria will protect the declaration. Neither will reveal the arrangement until the guardian gives permission.

Elena stepped backwards.

“Daniel wasn't simply helping my mother. He was part of the agreement.”

Richard nodded slowly.

“It appears so.”

Adrian continued reading.

Then he noticed something written at the bottom of the final page.

THE AGREEMENT SHALL REMAIN VALID ONLY WHILE THE THIRD HEIR REMAINS UNKNOWN.

Samuel's face changed.

“That's why Alexander has been desperate to identify the third heir.”

Elena looked at the document again.

“But who is the third heir?”

Before anyone could answer, a voice came from the entrance.

“Someone who was never supposed to be born.”

They turned.

Victoria stood in the doorway.

Her expression was serious.

Adrian held up the document.

“You signed this.”

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.”

“And Daniel signed it too.”

“Yes.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Why?”

Victoria looked at her for a long moment.

“Because your mother wasn't the only woman who gave birth to a child that night.”

Silence filled the archive.

Adrian frowned.

“What night?”

Victoria walked towards the table.

“The night Amelia gave birth to you, another child was born in the same hospital.”

Samuel stared at her.

“Who was the child?”

Victoria's eyes moved towards Elena.

Then she spoke the words that made Elena's blood run cold.

“The third heir was born just minutes before Adrian.”

Adrian gripped the edge of the table.

“Who is that child?”

Victoria slowly opened her handbag and removed an old hospital photograph.

She placed it beside the agreement.

Two newborn babies lay in separate bassinets.

One was labelled ADRIAN VALE.

The other had a name written beneath it.

ELENA ROSE BENNETT.

Elena stared at the photograph.

“That's me.”

Victoria nodded.

“But there is something the hospital records never revealed.”

She turned the photograph over.

On the back was a handwritten note:

ONE OF THESE CHILDREN WAS REGISTERED UNDER THE WRONG MOTHER.

Elena looked at Adrian.

And for the first time, she wondered whether the family secret was even bigger than either of them had imagined.
