MasukJonathan didn't move.
The message remained on Adrian's phone, its words hanging over the room like a threat.
ASK JONATHAN WHO HE BURIED TWENTY YEARS AGO.
Elena stared at him.
“Who did you bury?”
Jonathan looked away.
“Someone who should have stayed dead.”
Catherine's eyes widened.
“Jonathan!”
He raised a hand.
“Not here.”
Charles stepped forward.
“No. We're done hiding things. Tell us who was buried.”
Jonathan's jaw tightened.
“Michael Hayes.”
Margaret gasped.
Catherine staggered backward.
“No,” she whispered. “Michael was alive when I was told he died.”
Jonathan nodded.
“I know.”
Elena looked between them.
“Then whose funeral did you attend?”
Jonathan took a slow breath.
“His brother's.”
Adrian frowned.
“Margaret just said the man she married wasn't Michael. Are you saying she married his brother?”
Jonathan nodded.
“Yes.”
Margaret shook her head.
“That's not what he told me.”
“What did he tell you?” Elena asked.
Margaret looked confused.
“He introduced himself as Michael. He had Michael's documents, his signature and even his personal belongings. I believed I was marrying the same man Catherine had loved.”
Charles laughed without humour.
“So Michael's brother impersonated him?”
“Not exactly,” Jonathan replied. “Michael arranged it.”
Catherine looked devastated.
“He used another man to marry Margaret?”
“He needed someone to take his place legally. The real Michael was being watched. If he disappeared without explanation, the people searching for him would have gone after everyone connected to him.”
Margaret shook her head.
“But why didn't he tell me?”
“Because the less you knew, the safer you were.”
Elena rubbed her forehead.
“Then who was the man Jonathan buried?”
Jonathan walked toward the window.
“His brother's name was Matthew Hayes.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Matthew.”
“You knew him?” Adrian asked.
She nodded.
“He was kind. Quiet. He told me very little about his family. I thought he was simply a private man.”
“And you married him?” Elena asked.
“Yes. But our marriage was never what I believed it to be.”
Catherine's voice trembled.
“Did Matthew know about my daughter?”
Jonathan turned.
“He knew everything.”
Catherine looked at him.
“Then why didn't he help me?”
“He did.”
Jonathan reached into his jacket and removed a folded piece of paper.
“This was found among Matthew's belongings after his death.”
He handed it to Catherine.
She unfolded it carefully.
The handwriting was unfamiliar, but the words were clear.
If Catherine ever learns the truth, tell her that her daughter was never abandoned. She was moved because someone had discovered her existence. The person responsible was not Charles.
Catherine's fingers trembled.
“Who was it?”
Jonathan looked at Charles.
“That was the question Matthew died trying to answer.”
Charles's expression darkened.
“Stop looking at me.”
“Then tell us why you were involved in the original agreement,” Adrian replied.
Charles didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at Margaret.
“Did Matthew leave you anything else?”
Margaret hesitated.
“Yes.”
Everyone turned toward her.
She reached into her handbag and removed a small silver key.
“I found this in an envelope after his funeral. There was a note telling me to keep it until Elena was old enough to understand the truth.”
Elena stared at the key.
“Why didn't you give it to me?”
“Because I didn't know what it opened.”
Jonathan's face changed.
“Where did you find it?”
“In Matthew's old study.”
Jonathan stepped closer.
“Margaret, that key should have been destroyed.”
“Why?”
“Because it opens the private archive beneath the old Vale residence.”
Adrian frowned.
“I thought that archive had been sealed.”
“It was,” Jonathan answered. “But Matthew left something inside.”
Charles suddenly moved toward the door.
“Forget the archive. Whatever is inside belongs to the past.”
Adrian blocked his path.
“Why are you afraid of it?”
“I'm not afraid.”
“Then stay.”
Charles stared at him.
For several seconds, neither man moved.
Then Charles stepped aside.
“Fine. But when you discover what's inside, don't pretend I didn't warn you.”
---
An hour later, they arrived at the abandoned Vale residence.
The building stood behind a tall iron gate, its windows dark and its gardens overgrown.
Jonathan led them through the entrance and down a narrow staircase.
At the bottom was a heavy metal door.
Margaret inserted the key.
It turned.
The door opened with a low creak.
Inside was a small room filled with old boxes, photographs and locked cabinets.
Elena noticed a wooden desk at the centre.
On it sat a single envelope.
Her name was written across the front.
ELENA ROSE BENNETT.
She picked it up.
“Who put this here?”
Jonathan looked at the envelope.
“I don't know.”
Adrian stood beside her.
“Open it.”
Elena carefully removed the contents.
There were three photographs and a handwritten letter.
The first photograph showed Michael Hayes.
The second showed Matthew.
The third showed a woman holding a newborn baby.
Elena stared at the woman's face.
She had never seen her before.
But something about the picture felt strangely familiar.
At the bottom was a handwritten sentence.
One of these men was your father's friend. The other was your father's enemy.
Elena looked up.
“Which one was my father?”
Jonathan's face became unreadable.
Before he could answer, Catherine took the photograph.
Her eyes widened.
“That's her.”
“Who?” Elena asked.
“The woman who visited me after my daughter was born.”
Margaret moved closer.
“Rose?”
Catherine shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed at the woman holding the baby.
“That's the woman who told me my daughter was dead.”
The room fell silent.
Charles stared at the photograph.
Then he whispered something nobody expected.
“Her name is Evelyn.”
Elena's heart stopped.
“Evelyn?”
Charles nodded slowly.
“Your grandmother.”
Jonathan snatched the photograph from Catherine.
“Charles, don't.”
But Charles continued.
“Evelyn didn't just change the hospital records. She decided which children would grow up knowing their real families.”
Elena stepped backward.
“Why would my grandmother do that?”
Charles looked directly at her.
“Because she believed one of you was never supposed to be born.”
Suddenly, the lights went out.
A door slammed somewhere behind them.
Adrian reached for Elena's hand.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“Charles, you should have kept your mouth shut.”
The lights flickered back on.
A woman stood at the entrance.
Her hair was grey.
Her face was older.
But Elena recognized her immediately.
It was Evelyn.
And she was holding another photograph.
“I'm sorry, Elena,” she said quietly.
“But the baby you were told about was never the only child I took from that hospital.”
Adrian stared at the message.DON'T TRUST DANIEL. HE KNOWS WHO THE CHILD IS BECAUSE HE HELPED HIDE HIM.Daniel watched him.“What's wrong?”Adrian turned the phone around.“Richard says you helped hide the fourth child.”Daniel's expression barely changed.“Richard doesn't know what he's talking about.”“Then why is he warning me about you?”“Because he wants to turn you against me.”Elena stepped forward.“Enough. We need the truth, not another argument.”Daniel looked at her.“I've spent years protecting you.”“By lying to me?”“By keeping you alive.”The words silenced her.Margaret moved closer to Daniel.“You knew Isabella?”Daniel nodded.“She was my wife's sister.”“Then why didn't you tell me?”“Because Isabella made me promise never to reveal what happened to her child.”Margaret's eyes filled.“You let me believe she disappeared without explanation.”“She had to.”“Why?”Daniel opened his mouth, but Adrian's phone rang again.Richard.This time Adrian answered and put the ca
Margaret stared at Evelyn.“That's not true.”Evelyn didn't look away.“You know exactly who I'm talking about.”“No, I don't.”“Margaret, please. We've hidden enough.”Margaret shook her head.“I have spent years trying to understand what happened in that hospital. I raised Elena believing she was my daughter. I lost Matthew. I watched Daniel build a life around secrets. But I have never knowingly hidden another child.”Elena stepped closer.“Grandma, who is the fourth child?”Evelyn looked at her.“Someone who grew up believing they had no connection to the Vale family.”“Then tell us their name.”“I can't.”Charles gave a frustrated laugh.“Of course you can't. You appear with another mystery, make accusations, and expect everyone to believe you.”Evelyn turned toward him.“You know more than you're admitting.”“And you know less than you pretend.”Jonathan stepped between them.“Enough. We need to establish what happened before another person gets hurt by these lies.”Adrian picke
Elena couldn't move.Evelyn stood at the entrance, holding the photograph against her chest. For years, the family had searched for her. Some believed she was dead. Others believed she had abandoned them. But she was standing there.Alive.And apparently, carrying another secret.“What do you mean?” Elena finally asked. “What other child did you take?”Evelyn looked around the room.“Before I answer, I need everyone to understand something. The hospital records were not changed to protect one child. They were changed to protect several.”Catherine stepped forward.“You took my daughter.”“I saved your daughter.”“You separated me from her!”Evelyn lowered her eyes.“I know.”Catherine's voice broke.“Do you have any idea what that did to me?”“I do. And I have regretted it every day.”Charles moved closer.“You don't get to return after all these years and pretend you were protecting everyone.”Evelyn looked at him.“You're the last person who should question my decisions.”Charles's

The room fell silent.Elena stared at Margaret.“Michael Hayes was your husband?”Margaret nodded slowly.“Before I married Daniel, yes.”Catherine took a step forward.“That isn't possible.”Margaret turned toward her.“I wish it weren't.”“You told me Michael died before I discovered I was pregnant.”“I know what you were told.”Catherine's eyes filled with anger.“Then explain why you were married to him.”Margaret looked down at the photograph in Elena's hands.“Because someone needed to give him a reason to disappear.”Jonathan's expression hardened.“Margaret, be careful.”She ignored him.“Michael was already in danger when I met him. He had discovered something about the original inheritance agreement. Something that could have destroyed the Vale family.”Charles folded his arms.“And you expect us to believe you married him to protect him?”“No,” Margaret replied. “I married him because he asked me to.”Catherine shook her head.“Why would he ask you?”“Because he needed a le
Catherine read the message again.HER FATHER WAS NOT CHARLES VALE.For several seconds, she couldn't speak. Then she looked at Jonathan.“Who was my daughter's father?”Jonathan's expression became guarded.“I thought Charles was.”“So did I,” Catherine replied. “But Evelyn wouldn't have written that unless she knew something.”Adrian examined the photograph.“Could the message be referring to another man?”Richard shook his head.“The photograph was taken years after the child was born. Whoever wrote this wanted Catherine to understand that the truth had been hidden deliberately.”Samuel looked towards Catherine.“Did you have another relationship before Charles?”Catherine hesitated.“There was someone. But I was told he died before I discovered I was pregnant.”Jonathan stepped closer.“Who was he?”Catherine looked at him.“His name was Michael.”The name meant nothing to Elena. But Daniel, who had remained silent near the doorway, suddenly raised his head.“Michael what?”Catheri
