The baby with the wrong name

Elena stared at the photograph.

Two newborn babies.

Two names.

And a message suggesting that one of them had been registered under the wrong mother.

“What does this mean?” she asked.

Victoria folded her arms.

“It means someone changed the hospital records on the night you and Adrian were born.”

Adrian shook his head.

“That's impossible. My birth records have already been examined.”

“Your official records,” Victoria corrected. “Not the original hospital register.”

Samuel picked up the photograph.

“Where did you get this?”

“From Amelia's private belongings. She kept it hidden for years.”

Elena looked at Victoria.

“Are you suggesting Margaret isn't my biological mother?”

Victoria hesitated.

“I don't know.”

Elena's expression hardened.

“You cannot bring something like this to me without knowing what it means.”

“I didn't create the mystery, Elena. I'm trying to help you understand it.”

Adrian stepped between them.

“Then tell us everything you know.”

Victoria looked towards the photograph.

“The two babies were born in the same hospital, but the records were altered before either family left. One child was registered under a different name. The other was moved to another ward.”

Samuel frowned.

“Who arranged it?”

Victoria's voice dropped.

“Charles Vale.”

---

Elena turned towards Richard.

“Do you know anything about this?”

Richard shook his head.

“I only discovered that the records were changed when I began investigating Adrian's birth.”

Adrian looked at Victoria.

“Why would Charles exchange the identities of two newborns?”

Victoria took a breath.

“Because one of those children was connected to the original inheritance agreement. Charles wanted to make sure that nobody could identify the third heir.”

Samuel examined the photograph again.

“Then the labels may not be reliable.”

“Exactly,” Victoria replied.

Elena looked down at the two babies.

“Then how do we know which one is me?”

Victoria removed another paper from her handbag.

“This was attached to the photograph.”

It was a hospital record containing two identification numbers and a handwritten note.

BABY A — ORIGINAL IDENTITY WITHHELD.

BABY B — IDENTITY TRANSFERRED BY ORDER OF C. VALE.

Beneath the note was a date.

The same date Elena had seen on the guardian's ring.

November seventeenth.

Adrian took the paper.

“Where is the original hospital register?”

Victoria answered immediately.

“St. Catherine's Hospital. The old maternity records were transferred to its medical archive.”

Samuel looked concerned.

“That hospital closed its maternity department years ago.”

“Some records were preserved,” Victoria said. “But Charles made sure the relevant files disappeared.”

Elena folded her arms.

“So we're supposed to believe that a hospital record can reveal the third heir?”

“Not just the record,” Victoria replied. “There's also a witness.”

---

A knock interrupted them.

Everyone turned towards the entrance.

A young man in a dark jacket stood outside.

He held an envelope.

“I'm looking for Miss Elena Bennett.”

Elena stepped forward.

“That's me.”

He handed her the envelope.

“Someone asked me to deliver this.”

“Who?”

The man shook his head.

“I wasn't given a name.”

He left before anyone could question him further.

Elena opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a woman wearing a hospital uniform. She stood beside two newborn babies.

On the back was a handwritten message:

NURSE GRACE WAS THE LAST PERSON TO SEE THE ORIGINAL RECORDS. FIND HER BEFORE CHARLES DOES.

Samuel looked at the photograph.

“I remember her.”

Adrian turned towards him.

“You know this woman?”

“She worked at St. Catherine's. She was Amelia's nurse.”

Victoria nodded.

“Grace knew about the second agreement.”

Richard examined the photograph.

“Does anyone know where she is now?”

Victoria hesitated.

“She left the hospital shortly after the records disappeared. I heard she moved to a small town outside the city.”

Elena held the photograph tightly.

“Then that's where we're going.”

---

Meanwhile, at the Vale estate, Charles sat in his study reading a report.

His assistant entered.

“Sir, the photograph has been delivered.”

Charles looked up.

“To Elena?”

“Yes.”

He closed the report.

“Then Victoria has finally decided to betray me.”

“Should we stop them?”

Charles stood and walked towards the window.

“No. Let them search.”

The assistant looked confused.

“Are you sure?”

Charles turned.

“They believe the hospital records will reveal the third heir. But the records were not the only things changed that night.”

He opened a drawer and removed a small wooden box.

Inside was a silver bracelet with a faded hospital identification tag.

He studied it for a moment.

Then he whispered:

“Some truths should have remained buried.”

---

The following morning, Elena, Adrian, Samuel and Richard travelled to the address Victoria had found.

Margaret had insisted on staying with Lily, while Jonathan remained at the mansion.

The journey was quiet.

Elena kept looking at the photograph.

“Do you think my entire identity is a lie?” she asked.

Adrian turned towards her.

“No.”

“But what if the woman who raised me isn't my biological mother?”

“Margaret raised you. She loved you. Nothing in a photograph can change that.”

Elena nodded, although the uncertainty remained.

After another twenty minutes, they reached a modest house surrounded by a small garden.

Samuel knocked.

An elderly woman opened the door.

Her eyes widened when she saw the photograph in Elena's hand.

“Where did you get that?”

Elena showed it to her.

“Are you Grace?”

The woman looked towards the road before opening the door wider.

“Come inside. Quickly.”

---

Grace led them into a small sitting room.

She examined the photograph for several minutes.

“I thought these records had been destroyed,” she whispered.

Adrian leaned forward.

“Can you tell us what happened that night?”

Grace looked at him.

“You're Amelia's son.”

Adrian nodded.

“And you're Margaret's daughter,” she said to Elena.

Elena's eyes widened.

“How do you know?”

Grace placed the photograph on the table.

“Because I remember both your mothers.”

She explained that two families had arrived at the hospital on the same night. Amelia gave birth to Adrian, while Margaret gave birth to Elena.

However, a third woman had also arrived shortly before them.

She was carrying a child whose identity had been kept secret.

“Who was she?” Samuel asked.

Grace shook her head.

“I never knew her real name. She was brought in under a false registration.”

Richard frowned.

“Then why were there only two babies in the photograph?”

“Because the third child was moved before the photograph was taken.”

Elena stared at her.

“Are you saying there were three babies?”

Grace nodded.

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at Victoria's photograph.

“Then the labels were deliberately changed to make us believe there were only two.”

Grace reached for a drawer and removed a small notebook.

“I kept this because I knew one day someone would come looking for the truth.”

She opened it to a page marked with the date of their births.

Three names appeared.

ADRIAN VALE.

ELENA ROSE BENNETT.

And a third name.

LILY ROSE VALE.

Elena stopped breathing for a moment.

“Lily?”

Grace nodded slowly.

“Your daughter was connected to this arrangement before she was even born.”

Adrian stood.

“That's impossible. Lily was born years later.”

Grace looked at him with sadness.

“Her name was written in the record before either of you knew each other.”

Samuel examined the notebook.

“Someone predicted their child?”

Grace shook her head.

“No. Someone recorded a promise.”

She turned to the final page.

There was a signature beneath the names.

JONATHAN VALE.

And a sentence written in red ink:

THE THIRD HEIR WILL BE RECOGNISED THROUGH THE CHILD WHO CARRIES THE PROMISE, NOT THE BLOOD.

Elena slowly looked at Adrian.

“Does this mean Lily is the third heir?”

Before anyone could answer, Grace closed the notebook.

“No.”

She looked directly at Elena.

“It means someone has been using Lily's name to hide the real third heir.”

Her eyes moved towards the window.

“And that person is already inside your family.”
